    I don't get it. What are the sandy oily cylinders used for at the beginning? I see they get thrown into the top of the furnace, but are they fuel (sand??) or metal powder or what?

    That is charcoal. Sawdust mixed with oil, and then, converted to chardoal.

    I guess these guys have never seen a surface grinding machine before, they have really cut their production time down drastically buy not upgrading their machines to modern ones.

    It's used oil used to bind the casting sand. Not sure whether it's engine oil or cooking oil, or a mixture of anything available.
