The fact that this is being played on an international scale for the first time and ends with "may the old language endure" is so powerful to me for some reason. Like the voice of a past that knew a future as a small country was permanent. That they knew their culture might die. I can only imagine the pride one would feel in this moment singing in their father tongue to the whole world. How often does that get to happen for such a small country? It's amazing.

That's great that you get the meaning! It's not that Wales is super patriotic when singing the song- it's more than that. Singing the anthem is like showing the world that our language survived and the joy we feel at being able to sing it together. If you watch the Copa90 documentary about the Welsh Football Revolution, you can see how football has had a positive impact on the Welsh language in Wales. Part of the issue is that due to colonisation, as well as active suppression of the language, Wales developed a like 'self-hatred' towards the language and many of the older generation felt shame and didn't pass the language down. Kids were beaten in school for speaking Welsh, so there's that generational trauma from it. The success of the team has developed a new sense of pride in the language and it's caused an uptake of people learning Welsh so they can sing the song. It's amazing that kids in the future won't have the same stigma or shame about speaking Welsh. I think having 'may the old language endure' as the last line was a stroke of genius- because it kind of drums into you when you sing it. It's also really cool how the anthem has resonated with other countries who had to fight for the survival of their language and culture.

Sometimes the stereotypes are real. Wales really is a country of song and the spoken word. Anyone doubting the latter should listen to Richard Burton reading Under Milk Wood. In my opinion there is nothing in the English language which comes close to touching it

For many years all the "home nations" were required to use God save the Queen, but booing from the Scots made it impossible to continue. Scotland and Wales chose their own songs, which are not considered to be anthems by the UK. There are moves by England to use another song, probably Jerusalem.

@@affifindsyou7598 I disagree. It's also a limitation of this video being filmed on the opposite side of the stadium, which makes the singing seem distorted and out of tune. I'd recommend you listen to a version on the Welsh side, much better quality.

Wales does not need/deserve to have its own football team. Abolish team Wales and let players like Bale play for England. Rugby is understandable, but it's stupid to think Wales deserves a national football team.
