    The title of this song, "Cornflake Girl" is a satire of Tori's real life. She was in a commercial for Kellogg's Just Right cereal in 1985.(you can find it on KZread, Tori had short dark brown hair) The satire in the lyrics is her talking about her big break is a cereal commercial, and not being a real musician. "This is not really happening - you bet your life it is" The bitter taste of this really pushed her to get away from advertising and follow her dreams of music. "Never was a Cornflake Girl" But hey, everyone had to start somewhere.

    The Kellogg bros and their former employee who stole their trade secrets are in the same graveyard. Those guys were cult members. They believed that masturbation was a sickness and it was caused by a diet of spicy and sweet food so they mashed up some bland boring grain, roasted it until it was golden brown, threw it in a bowl with some milk and called it corn flakes and grape nuts. John Kellogg invented the stuff and his brother Will ran the factory and did the marketing. He changed the recipe to make it sweeter to boost profits.

    The real story behind it is as Amber mentioned at the end-toxic female friendship. Cornflake girls would hurt you at any opportunity, a subtle reference to FGM, which is often done or facilitated by females closest to the victim.

  • @Johnny_Socko

    @Johnny_Socko

    @@davidthaler7018 At the time this came out, I read an interview where she said she never wanted to act like the other white girls at school ("cornflake" being a known slang word for white person), and preferred to hang out with people of color ("Hangin' with the raisin girls"). Since Tori has given different versions of the meaning of this song, I am not saying this one is the "correct" answer. With her explanations changing all the time, it's like she is the Coen Brothers of music. 😄

    @@lynnevetterthis is my favorite song of all time 😊 this was just the radio edit (which is absolutely awesome!), but the 6 minute album version just has the most killer piano solos that go even longer than they do here. It’s the perfect song to me- it’s unique, it’s got quirky interludes, her vocal range is amazing, there’s three different countermelodies, two different harmonies, and probably the best piano solo I’ve ever heard. Her "Hey Jupiter" live from 6/4/05 is one of the most ethereally gorgeous things I've ever heard: Just her angels-envy-it voice and her "Bad Boy" Hammond organ. Her bravery in Montreux in 1992 in performing the harrowing "Me and a Gun" automatically qualifies her for a Humanity gold medal. The power and losing-herself-in-the-music's-moment passion of almost any of her 7+ minute live performances of "The Waitress" are hypnotic and breathtaking. An artist so amazing in so many ways.

    Her live version of "Precious Things" (Live Session 1998) is a killer-diller must-watch. She and her band tear the roof off the joint.

    Imagine how hard/amazing/otherworldly it is to conceive of a piece like this. So much is going on. I love it. I hear something new everytime I listen to it. Did she really think to put all that in there? A different level.

    Since you know "Smells Like Teen Spirit" you should try her version of the song; it's almost a completely new thing! Tori Amos is one of my favorite artists ever, and definitely one of the best of the 90's! in concerts she has 2 pianos set up, with her in the middle, and it's an amazing show!!

    Back in the late 80’s, she fronted a pop-rock band, Y Kant Tori Read, and Matt Sorum was the drummer. After they broke up, he joined The Cult for a bit. After THAT, he replaced GNR drummer Steven Adler in 1991.

    She`s fantastic, I played this and other songs from her in an FM Radio station in the south of Brazil, it was in the late 80`s. The piano, the voice, the bassist, OMG! Unforgettable songs from Tori Amos. And there`s no guitars (I love guitars, but not in her songs). That`s why I`m here today, listening it again!

    Echoing the recommendations of others here: "Winter", "Little Earthquakes", "China", and "Precious Things" are amazing songs from the early years in Tori's career. I think you would love those and be incredibly impressed. "Winter", live, especially, is a performance to blow you away. Tori's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is breathtaking.

    The groove for Cornflake Girl has it's roots in reggae music. Tori mentioned in several interviews how she was inspired by reggae musicians playing around near her apartment in London during the summer with the windows down. You can really hear this influence when she plays it live with her band.

    "Snowflake?" Me thinks you mistyped. Great song, and great reaction. Ms. Amos is, and always will be, one f my favorites. You should check out her version of "Feels Like Teen Spirit" or her version of Eminems "97 Bonnie and Clyde". She isn't afraid to put herself out there. She was a survivor of an assult, and she sort of sings about it. "Me and a Gun" where she lightly plays, and talks about the attack. Before she made it big, she was in a band with Slash called "Y Kant Tori Read?" She got her start playing at a piano bar for tips, and the two times I saw her in concert, she stops midway through and takes requests from the audience. I got to hear her do "Suzanne" and "I Ran". I hope you continue to react to her music.
