    I could swear that I heard or read somewhere that Sagan did not actually make that statement about a universe with only us in it would seem like a waste of space, I just did a quick, cursory check online, and it seems now to be attributed to him, though, but that might be because it was made so famous by the movie Contact. I'm a little suspicious, though because it sounds like a somewhat presumptuous statement. It assigns a value to human life and then says that it's not enough to justify its existence in the universe.
