Increasing the tyre size on your 4WD. Tech Talk with Mic.

Fitting a Suspension kit along with increasing the Tyre size of your 4WD. What are the advantages & disadvantages?
Fitting a bigger tyre is the only way you can increase the clearance between the bottom of the diff and the road. Especially on solid axle 4WD's.
On 4WDs with independent Suspension, a suspension lift will lift the under portion of the vehicle.
Another advantage will be higher side walls, which will allow you to blow down the Tyre further.
What is your take on larger tyres on your 4WD?

One major problem with bigger tires is that if you damage a tyre out in rural Africa, you will have a major problem replacing it. Most rural tyre dealers stock only standard sizes.

Very interesting video. I do agree with the 1 size up only. Just another advantage is that any bump the tyre see is now slightly smaller. The same obviously apply with rocks.

Hi Mick Thanks for the videos. Can you give your thoughts in a video on reprogramming or “tuning” your ecu. Including newer vehicles. I drive and tow with a 2022 GD6 2.8 4x4 Fortuner. A bit more power is always useful but I wouldn’t want to compromise my vehicle in any way Many thanks

Hi David. At Ironman 4x4 Africa we are not in the business of performance modifying vehicles. It is not within our filed of expertise. As a company and in a personal capacity I advice against any form of vehicle performance enhancement, be it with add on chips or ECU reprogramming. I do not know enough about the subject to give you any form of good advice. What I can tell you is what I have learnt from personal experience with our company vehicle fleet. We have in the past had add on chips which were quite problematic. We elected to remove these pretty soon after installation. These were from reputable suppliers. We therefore also do not know what the long term effects would have been with regards to vehicle reliability and longevity. We also had a Ford Ranger that had a Ford approved performance upgrade fitted. This vehicle featured hybrid turbo, enlarged intercooler, exhaust and add on chip. Unfortunately this vehicle had a major mechanical failure due to the upgrade after 24 months. We currently have 2 vehicles that have been re-mapped, both turbo diesels. We have not had any issues with these vehicles thus far however they are relatively new. We cannot comment on how the performance upgrades will effect vehicle reliability or longevity. We will in future not be doing any of this on our fleet of vehicles. We rely heavily on them to perform faultlessly when far away from home.

Hi Kusheen. I'm assuming your standard size is 265/65/17(?) If this is the case then fitting 265/70/17 will increase the overall diameter if the tyre by around 20mm or 10mm each side. We have not had issues with this on a standard vehicle.
