I'm 49 and I took lessons starting in the 6th grade and stopped after a couple years.I picked it up every now and then. Then my roommate worked at a record store and came home with Cowboys from Hell in 1990 and I heard Dime and haven't put a guitar down since. The cool thing is I'm one of I'm sure thousands who owe dime credit for playing.

I picked up guitar as a kid after hearing Mouth For War on headbangers ball. I couldn't get it out of my head, I went to Tower Records the next day and bought Vulgar Display of Power and Cowboys From Hell. Then I worked my ass off to get my first guitar and I never looked back.
Nailing Dime tone without Dime gear? That proves the gear is often simply overestimated - it´s more about the player´s ability to tweak the settings of what he has available. ;)

Yes, the playing is the most important. The Groove. But ML guitars really have a tight and bassy tone, and some kind of resonance/vibration that goes through the wings

He did a great job at getting dimes tube tone for sure!
Dime had a certain swing and groove to his riffing... not every player can swing it. Even good players can have trouble playing Dime’s killer riffs. He was such a gifted and unique player. The vids of him playing in high school are amazing. He was a monster even then!

I think a big part of what sets Dime apart is his vibrato was huge. He had this swagger with his vibrato that was instantly noticeable and would add dynamics to almost every note he played.

It always amazes me how well his riffs(hell, their entire catalog) has aged. It’s one of the bands I never get tired of. If I hear it randomly my heart starts pumping. Even these riffs your playing make me wanna go jam out for a few hours. Bedroom concert time!!

If you look at old concerts from the 90s. The setlist is stacked and every song is a certified banger. Absolutely zero fills. I was lucky enough to catch them everytime they came through town in the 90s and those concerts were extremely loud and his tone just cut through the entire building. It was searingly high and would just level everything.
Love this! I remember Eddie Van Halen saying in an interview he was too poor to buy flash stuff, so he learnt how to make his guitar sound like he wanted.

Dime was a great guy talked to him several times in my life. I met him at a club in Arlington in 1988 His girlfriend was a waitress and bartender at the club we were playing at called Metalworks. We had a Pantera song in our set and she said to wait to play the Pantera song till dime gets here I am gonna call dime and have him come down and check ya'll out. we were all sceptical thinking she was pulling our leg and low and behold 30 min later in walks Dime. I talked to him for prob 20 min He was the nicest person I have ever met in my life. He set your mind at ease like you have known him your whole life. I talk to him several other times after that through the years and I can tell you he would be so happy and proud you did what you just did on breaking his style down. I guarantee if he was still alive he would have jumped right in and played with you. that was Dime. awesome video. bro.

He used upstrokes in the Walk riff. Using upstrokes in Walk and many other signature Pantera riffs, gives the sound that groove or “swing” that made him famous.
The first time I saw Pantera was in 90 or 91, I was in high school. Skid Row headlined. Dimebag ran up and down aisles and let people touch him and his guitar while he played. Phil played a solo on Whiplash by Metallica. What a great show!!! I was lucky to have seen Pantera a few times during the Vulgar Display tour.------Good video.

That's the secret to HUGE tight tone. Mid boost up front to cut flub & fizz. Then post-gain bass & treble boost to emphasize the harmonics & fatten it all back up. I've found the two best tools for this are an EQ in front & another in the FX loop. (Just like a Mesa Mark).

I share your opinion of Dime. 13:37 saddle up the horses riff. 15:35 was the "flick" as Dime called it in his impromtu lessons. Great video!

The tone is killer, considering you’re not using anything signature Dime wise to get the sound. Anyone ever tell you, you look like Jesse James? Like until you spoke, I was like...WTF?! Keep rocking brother!! 🤘🏻😤🤘🏻
