In the Studio with Jeff Berlin and Joe Frazier

Jeff is currently recording a brand new version of his most popular song, "Joe Frazier," to commemorate its 30th Anniversary. The new single will feature solos by Steve Vai (lead guitar), Chester Thompson (drums), David Sancious (keys), and Tom Hemby (rhythm guitar). This new song, paired with a remastered version of the original, will be available in October as an autographed collector's edition 12" vinyl (which will include an autographed chart of the newly composed version). You can learn more about the release at jeffberlinmusicgroup.com.
In this video, Jeff is in the studio laying down the bass track. It was the end of the recording day and Jeff was game to do a little something for the camera. But it turned out to be a magical event. Showing that process is everything, and that sometimes the improvised moment becomes the keeper (he and producer John McCracken decided to use this take for the final track).

It gives me hope that Jeff plays at a slower tempo than the original and makes mistakes like the rest of us. Truly one of the greatest in so many ways.

I didn't sight read this in time. I wrote it and practiced it a lot before I recorded it. I would never sight read anything like this if I didn't have to do it :)

It's so funny to ask Jeff Berlin: "Do you need a click?" Him! The enemy of all clicks...too cool...

In the studio? I use them all the time. In practice, I am convinced that they offer no benefit. If bass players followed my approach in learning for three months, they would find this out for themselves.

@@lumpyjazz That's kinda like saying using the front pickup offers no benefit. Sure, why not. But maybe I have my reasons for using the front pickup. Millions of great players use the front pickup. So, why is it even an issue? Other than that, love the vid. And thank you for showing you're human. I wasn't sure.

Ha! I use them all the time when I record. In learning, I see them as a cliche of learning time because time is not represented by a click that neither speeds up nor slows down. CLICK time is, and anyone who can play can play to a click. I've seem way too many players at my clinics do this with no effort whatsoever to know that this is true.

Mate, you created this. It's one thing you can't remember it without dots, but you can't play it with dots?? Round 3 sounds laboured and frankly awful.
