Vocally it's very typical of the 80s but the playing from everyone is unbelievable and what an unbelievable treat to hear Jeff Berlin, Neil Peart and Scott Henderson playing together who all sound fantastic. RIP Neil Peart & Ronnie Montrose

Extremely sad for Neil Peart`s death. His contributions to music , poetry, literature and above all, drumming are imense. Thank you for touching and enhancing our lives with your art. Edgar Froese once wisely said :“There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address.” , i really hope he is right and Neil and other greats are preparing a great gig somewhere out there.

And apparently Neil playing on this track was a nightmare (heard from various people who were at the session). Playing cool fills to Tom Sawyer isn't in the same league as playing with a real, elite bassist

"A real, elite bassist"? Sorry, I've seen both live repeatedly. Jeff's a legend--half history and half myth. Geddy's a bass god, at this point on par with Jack Bruce.

No disrespect intended re Geddy. He's a very solid rock bassist. I've seen both live as well. On that note, I absolutely stick to what I said. I should note that playing jazz/fusion is significantly, significantly, significantly more difficult than rock, and makes musicians who pursue the style WAY more versed in a very wide spectrum of styles, and difficulty levels, harmonic concepts, etc. A guy like Steve Vai is great, but he'd be a true deer in the headlights trying to do what guys like Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, and Allan Holdsworth do (please don't take issue there. The guy has problems even improvising over a simple blues. Throw some real harmonic changes and I'd bet my life on it that he would be locked up). The reverse, not so much. Those guys would easily hang with Vai-esque rock. That said, Neil is solid and recognizable for what he does, but take any really experienced drummer (I don't mean someone who never outgrew just being a rock dude), and he isn't exactly a jaw dropper, and no, the guy can't seem to swing to save his life. I could see Jeff having a problem with that. Anyway, my 2 cents. Not trying to offend!

If you listen to Rush's Hold your fire record, you will hear Geddy playing several bass lines and phrases that are heavily influenced by Jeff Berlin. G. Lee started to use bass chords and arpeggios more often right after Neil's performance on J.Berlin's Champion record.

I would never have guessed this was him if asked without foreknowledge. Cool that he did it, strange that it sounds like someone else.

If you think Berlin has a light touch then I hate to see what you think heavy handed is. Berlin has a light touch when it's called for but I've seen him play in person and he digs in pretty hard. He's also not strictly a Jazz guy. Squire's tone is aggresive largely due to his choice of gear and using a pick. Not saying that's bad. Squire, I think, had one of the most badass tones ever. Comparing his tone to Berlin's is apples and oranges, though.

@@Boethius4748 Well, J. Berlin said it himself in one of his clinics or videos. When talking about digging the fingers in the strings he said something like : if you want to play louder just crank the amp volume up and keep playing , no need to force your fingers through the strings. That is his style, nothing wrong with it but he is not apt for Rock and Rock or heavier music. I do not have a problem with that, i just like Squire`s sound, tone and attitude better.

@@RiquezaEmGotas i don't disagree on the tone at all. He may have said that and I'm sure he meant it But he does get in it despite that. Not to the point of pounding the shit out of the strings but it's not what I'd define as a light touch. fwiw I don't Squire played particularly hard, either.

Niel's style fits this track! Unfortunately he has a very stale swing, especially back then. You have to consider the fact that all he played was Rush and he put everything into it playing with the same 2 guys touring and recording with not much of a break. Just giving my old hero a little slack. The other tune he played on is a good tune but the drums are weak and it sounds like Steve Smith at the end. It's strange. With that said I've been into Berlin since The Bruford Band. Scott Henderson is like mixing Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth and Stevie Ray Vaughn! He's so good and has refined his style and sound over the years. He's really found his own sound! It's not the most unique sound but it's derived from totally original players Who have unique sounds... So it's carrying on the legacy of Holdsworth who just past away. Stevie Ray! Jeff Beck is still going strong. Anyways if you haven't!? Check out VITAL TECH TONES with Scott Henderson, Steve Smith and Victor Wooten. They made two CD's in '98 n' '00. In your face raw nasty Fusion (especially VTT2)

The cover art is one of the worst EVER for a fusion LP ... but 50% of the tracks are really very good. Wouldn't part with this disc, though it's hardly in the same league as Berlin's earlier work with Allan Holdsworth and Bruford!
