    Oh I haven't seen this. 2 of my favourite bassists on stage together. I saw Jeff Berlin in 79 with Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth. He was phenomenal. Tbh there is no point in comparing Jeff and Jaco. They are different in their approach to the instrument. Two exceptional bass players, and I'm saying that as a huge fan of Jaco as well. So I'm not being biased😊. Thank you for uploading this

    Just brought out my original Vinyl, first solo albums from both Jaco and Jeff, both mint, twice played and I think I'll just sit back in my studio and enjoy both. Yes, I bought them when they came out. Must admit I love Joni's Live album from I think it was 1980 in California, Shadows in Light... just one of the best Live swinging more modern albums I can recall. Wow can she pick a band ,that women see's thing's in players most people just can't ,enough said.

    Both of these guys were musical giants but this particular recording appears to have been made when Jaco was not at his best... To give Jeff Berlin credit, to this day he stays away from playing anything that's anywhere near a Jaco trademark. It's not because he can't play the stuff but that he's got so much respect for Jaco, same thing with Stanley Clarke, another friend of Jaco's. RIP Jaco!

    It didn't seem like a battle..... Jaco was trying to create a melodic line to amplify what Jeff was playing and also to create a bit of structure. Sounded more like a jam but a very technical one at that 🙂.

    why is everyone saying Jaco is not his best here ?? He’s accompanying NOT soloing and he sounds great!!! Does he have to be playing super fast solos all the time ??!! He’s backing Jeff and the real challenge for a musician is to make OTHER musicians sound good and Jaco succeeds beautifully.

    excellent point. In fact, my I can play most of my favorite jaco bass lines, but i did not write them. And some of my most favorite bass lines he did were more thematic and unique like when he collabed with Joni mitchell. He did some amazing stuff that was really going against her voicings. Like you said, everyone seems to be hung up on virtuosity. I think of just as much of a composer as a bassist. His piano compositions are amazing I learned "unforgotten love on the piano" its chilling. Jaco himself loved many bassists that were didn't play anything fast. He loved reggae bassists, jamerson, and even paul mccartney bill wyman of the stones. Jaco said he appreciated some of the bassists in country music to latin funk . I like your post.

    We can all rhyme off a list of 50 100 200 players that... were... and... are... great in their own way , but we all steal from one another . I would never have developed my style of playing after 45 years, if not for all of them, and not just (bass player) lines . When I was in high-school in 1978 I read that Jaco studied trombone charts... guess what I did...When I went to Musicians Institute in 1982 I heard Jeff say play in the pocket , well I hope you all keep your ears listening too all the great players and make it work for you. It's one thing to be fan but we are all students, even the greats... Keep playin the blues in F.

    Unless you can play a Jeff Berlin solo, like the one from Water on the Brain from the Holdsworth Road Games album, and a Jaco solo maybe his recorded takes of Donna Lee or Chromatic Fantasy, then stop comparing the two. I met Jaco and I studied with Berlin. I transcribed and played everything they had recorded up till about 1987 and can tell you exactly who I feel is the more advanced and why, but not in this silly competitive way some of you’re engaged in. Let’s just say that from 1976-1987 these two were the most advanced players of this genre by a fairly wide margin (of known bassists). But, yes, one did have a facility that the other did not quite have. It’s just nice that this rare moment was recorded. Be thankful for that. Back then I was unsure they had ever met but Jaco told me they had. Glad they did.

    C Mainten I’m not in a position to say which player is “better.” I find that very disrespectful anyways. However, if one wants to compare their techniques and learn something from what they attempted as players that’s a discussion that doesn’t insult these two great players’ legacy’s. Everything I said is true and I can answer and back up any question or comment I made but only in the context of learning. Seems like you would get that.

  • @musicuniverse1986
    @musicuniverse19862 жыл бұрын

    I encourage anyone who is curious to how the entire jam unfolded to check out the link to the complete (audio)recording that Jeff Lee so generously shared. Jaco gets just as much solo space as Jeff B and sounds great considering the circumstances. In fact they switch between being the accompanist/soloist throughout. At some moments in the jam the boundary that traditionally distinguishes those roles disappears entirely, which is not surprising knowing these two. The musical result is very interesting regardless, and I'm very happy that the recording exists. These two are two of my biggest musical heroes and having them share the stage to exchange their musical philosophies has historical value indeed. I think anyone would agree that Jaco was not at his best here and find themselves wondering what the result would have been like had we heard him in this setting with the skill level he possessed in his peak years about 7-10 years prior to this, and you could perhaps question Jeff's motivations for inviting a down and out Jaco that he met by coincidence on the streets of LA. Jeff was and still is known as being among the most dedicated "practicers" in the bass world, (almost to the degree of compulsion) and it wouldn't surprise me if he had spent considerable time on shedding "Invitation" specifically... And knowing the struggles Jaco faced at this time that led him to go for long periods almost without touching his instrument there hadn't been a more ideal time up til this point for Jeff to "upstage" him if that was his goal. You could argue that there is some evidence outside of what I just mentioned to confirm this in the way that Jeff occasionally apes Jaco's phrases as if to mock him. Or maybe I'm just imagining things..Anyway, that's my take on it and like I said DO check out the clip of Jeff Lee's audio recording that he linked to in the comment section. This video is only a snippet of the jam that actually lasts for over 13 minutes in its entirety.

    I'd say Berlin is a more fluid soloist, like a sax perhaps. Jaco is more angular. Berlin sounds lighter towards a thinner guitar sound, while Jaco's sound has more breadth. Berlin is lighting it up with his solo, and Jaco is doing an amazing job grooving and giving Berlin room to play. Anyway, just some random thoughts. They both are appealing to me for different reasons.

    Jeff Berlin is a phenomenal player, but unlike Stanley Clarke or Jaco he’s not known as a great composer of bass driven and inspired music. Clarke and Jaco wrote and composed music specifically for the bass that elevated and revolutionized the instrument to new heights. Even when Stanley went into more commercial directions the bass was still central melodically and harmonically. This is what tremendously separates Stanley and Jaco from Jeff Berlin. I’m familiar with Jeff’s Champion and Pump It solo albums of the mid 80’s and that’s my case and point. Clarke and Jaco played unique and good sounding music for the bass.

    That's the draw back to me, is when player's have chops galore, but it's just a busy mess of notes that makes no sense, really. This fusion/progressive playing where it's punch, punch, punch. There's no pauses, breaks, structure, melody lines or whatever, no dynamics. After you've been wowed by the chops then left what are you left with, ok, nuff of that.

    I never met these magnificent masters, and I know there are some who "claim" they have but, I think if that were true then they would easily be able to discern between the "Innovator" and the "Immitator". I could tell you that I met JFK at a coffee shop before he was president....which is a lie but, you can't prove otherwise, and it makes a great story :-) .

  • @tung-x

    Both were innovators. Neither is an imitator of the other. Both of their styles are quite different. The only similarities, in my book, are playing over the bridge pickup and using the bridge pickup exclusively, and incredible facility on the neck. Otherwise, their musical vocabulary is quite different.
