In The Heights Nina Comparison-Breathe

I got video of different renditions of the song "Breathe" from "In The Heights" so we can compare! None of the video is mine. I own nothing. Enjoy!

    Leslie's version is so vulnerable , I'm not quite sure why so many people don't like it. She sounds unsure and young like someone who is disappointed with herself for letting down her community. Personally loved her version. Na Ha-na version was absolute beautiful as well.

    People have different opinions on this but I thought leslie’s version made sense. It’s depressing and melancholic and lost and sad and angry but mostly fear. This is an 18/19 year old girl seeing the world for the first time from her community. She’s disappointed by what she finds and rejects it to come back home but home had so much pressure on her that she’s now just scared of disappointing everyone especially her father. It’s a good belting song on broadway but in the movie, I felt like someone understood what dropping out of college felt like. It’s a terrifying decision and coming home to explain that. I’d be depressed, lost and scared too.

    I get what you mean but I honestly didn't feel anything from Leslies version, in Mandys her stronger voice has a lot of pent up emotion that you'd expect from someone who has to come to face with her reality

    @@kika-pon6128 true, everybody has their own interpretation. For me, As a Broadway song, Mandy’s voice is better. As a movie where you are trying to put yourself in such a vulnerable position, I preferred Leslie. I had anxiety watching her scene because I’ve been there as well. It’s not really about pent up emotions, it’s more like everything else is overwhelming and you don’t know how to deal with it cause you don’t even know how it happened in the first place. How did you end up dropping out of a college you got a scholarship for? You don’t feel brave, you feel judged cause so many would kill to be you. What do you say in your defence? Anyway my point it that mandy’s voice made me cry and Leslie’s version made me understand... it isn’t really passionate, it’s defeat.

    The issue I have with Leslie's voice is it sounds too soft and pop. There is no contrast between Nina's and Vanessa's voice. Their voices are too simular. The same color. The contrast of Nina's belting and power vs Vanessa's softness. It works to distinguish their two colors and to separate their characters. They sounded too similar in the movie.

    I actually had the opposite thought! I've never seen the show, only listened to the original cast soundtrack, and I found it pretty hard to know what was going on because I couldn't clearly hear the difference between Vanessa and Nina on the first few listens. To me, Nina in the movie has so much emotion and you can hear it coming through in Leslie's performance (it made me cry in the cinema!), whereas Vanessa's songs were more active/determined, so I could instantly tell the difference between these two characters and what they were like.

    This is one of the few times where I like both the original and the movie singers equally 😲 To be fair, I haven't seen In The Heights yet so there's no nostalgia or anything for me. But both deliver a different kind of emotion and performance that I really relate to.

    Honestly I was very disappointed by the movie version, not just Nina but in general. She felt sidelined as a character, and as a singer I felt she didn't have the weight in her voice to give this song have the impact it deserves. I feel like in the original, the leads were usnavi and Nina, and each had a love interest, whereas in the movie, it felt like usnavi was the lead, Vanessa was the love interest, and Nina and benny were supporting characters.

  • @harvestmoon_autumnsky

    @harvestmoon_autumnsky

    Same, Usnavi was more a narrator, kind of like a ringmaster for the whole story, a connecting thread, but Nina I always felt was the MC, and in the movie, not so much. She was barely a secondary character. I thought she was definitely ingénue(d) in the movie, a fluffy character. Instead of being a warrior like she was in the musical.

    My favorite would have to be leslie, she seems the right age and brings a lot of emotion you can see it in her eyes and facial expressions, It was hard to decide between her and Mandy but after re watching both of them I had to choose Leslie. Not just because of singing but she just seems like Nina to me, and I love the change we’re it isn’t abula who calls her but it’s her dad, because you kinda see how scared she is to tell him.

You know that feeling when you go home to a town wherein people expected you'd go to higher places only to feel like youve disappointed them, when you go out you feel like everyone's eyes are on you and you keep thinking anx telling yourself "its fine just smile and breathe" but at the same time you're walking fast because you're ashamed of yourself? Thats exactly what I got from her version. Brilliant!

    I've never heard any of these before, coming in without knowing the show is fascinating. Giselle stole it for my, by minute 6 she's still the best so far. I get the fanbase for Mandy, as the original, but she's not objectively the best imo. Also, Na Ha-na is incredible, she has a unique vocal quality to the rest - almost more 'disney princess' but she carries it SO well. I know Myra isn't a studio recording by WOW the balance is so bad for this recording. It looks like an official one, too - you can't even hear her for the first few seconds. She's fighting to be heard and gets more 'shrill' to fight with the orchestra, that had to hurt. I started wondering if recording equipment just got *that* much better from 2008 to now, but nope - 2018 in DC, Anna is incredible and that recording is potato quality. Hm. It's actually not fair to the rest about Leslie, because her recording is obviously by far the best, due to the nature of filming. I want to hear them all sing in that quality recording. Eva, Giselle, Na, and Leslie were the best for me, and a few definitely sunk to the bottom but no need for that negativity here, and it could have been recording quality anyway :)

    i was very disappointed and confused why they didn’t cast someone with the range to sing for nina in the movie. dont get me wrong leslie is talented and amazing but i just didn’t think she was right for nina. like breathe in the film just did not do it for me, its a powerful song and Leslie just didn’t deliver it. i felt like the changes they made to the song were so unnecessary. i also think that some of the songs that nina was apart of in the film didn’t hit as strongly as they could’ve because of leslies range. again i don’t think leslies a bad vocalist or actor AT ALL and i did enjoy her in the film, but i do think there was stronger casting options for nina vocal wise that they could’ve went with.

    Just a guess, but probably because musical theater translates differently on the screen rather than on stage. Screen acting is more subtle because we can see the scene and the emotions more clearly than on stage. I remember this part of the scene (well, the whole movie) being really visually appealing so they probably let the that do more of the talking. She probably sang with a screen in mind rather than a theater!
