In the Days of Noah [Part 1] - An Old-Earth View of the Genesis Flood with Dr. Hugh Ross

The Bible tells us that in the last days, there will be mockers who will scoff at the idea of a biblical flood. If you are a Christian who has ever talked to a skeptic or an unbeliever, you may have experienced this mockery first-hand. You've been told there's no evidence for a flood, or that the Bible is just a mythical tale, and that while the story of Noah and the animals on the ark might be a cute Sunday school lesson on a felt board, no thoughtful adult takes it seriously.
On this episode of Apologetics Profile podcast, we talk to astrophysicist and Christian apologist, Dr. Hugh Ross of Reasons to Believe. Dr. Ross has explored in great detail the text of Scripture and has participated in discussions and debates with believers and unbelievers alike about the reality of Noah's flood found in the book of Genesis, chapters 6-9.
Dr. Ross takes what is known as an "old-earth" view of the flood. That is, Dr. Ross believes the earth to be billions of years old, rather than six to ten thousand years old. He also does not believe the flood covered the entire globe.
We have also featured a "young-earth" view of the flood from Dr. Tim Clarey of the Institute for Creation Research. You can listen to that episode on our Good Heavens! podcast here: / 53039288
We believe as Christians that there is room for civil and charitable disagreement about the scientific details of the flood and we hope that no matter if you are a young or old-earth creationist, or a skeptic or unbeliever, that you can see how Dr. Ross and Dr. Clarey charitably disagree but affirm that the flood described in the Bible really did happen and most importantly, they both affirm the inspiration of Scripture and the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This broadcast and our broadcast with Tim Clarey of the Institute for Creation Research do not constitute an endorsement of young or old-earth creationism and do not necessarily reflect the views of Watchman Fellowship, Inc. Arlington, TX (www.Watchman.org). Our aim is to present different perspectives and model Christian charity and love in how we address the issues that divide believers. This does not mean we water down how we are to interpret the Scriptures, rather we believe the science issues and certain aspects of biblical interpretation are within the realm of Christian liberty to explore and have disagreement.

It's pretty simple. The Tower of Babel happened after the flood. Humankind was in one location. A local flood would have killed all human kind except for the eight that were in the ark. Thank you Dr Ross.

Noah's Ark was not a "boat." The Ark was not a ship either. It had no propulsion, no sails, no oars, no rudder. It was a barge. It floated and went were the water currents and winds took it. Nautical studies have shown it completely seaworthy.

Hi Cher - Permit me for a second to share a little behind-the-scenes of such interviews. This was part of a series we did. There is a great deal of preparation involved in talking to scholars and scientists (I am neither). Preparing for such interviews with such individuals take time and effort (reading their books and/or watching presentations). There are interviewers with “cue-card” questions who aren’t really listening to their guest or are minimally familiar with the subject. Then their are interviewers who are prepared enough to have a thoughtful conversation. I aim for being able to have a conversation with our guests. So I prepare (and probably over-prepare). The interview itself is often the first time I ever speak with the guest. As an author myself who has been interviewed, there is nothing more enjoyable (and respectful, I think) than speaking with someone who has engaged the book and knows the material. There is nothing more off-putting than having an interviewee not having read the material and just asking dry questions and appearing uninterested in what you’re saying. I don’t like being on camera. I don’t like seeing myself. I am used to it though. And I compensate for my dislike of my camera shyness by at least working hard to know the guests’ work and have an enjoyable conversation. I want to demonstrate to our guests respect by showing them I’ve done my homework. Thanks for your input. Hope you liked the interview nonetheless.

I love listening to Dr. Ross.... But I disagree with one point about the soulish animals. I absolutely agree that humans have an effect on them... But I disagree about in the Torah noting how a domesticated animal should be handled. Just like human animals behave based on their genetics and since The Fall - there has been corruption. In my understanding - that precept in the Torah had to do with "eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth". A person who knows their animal is dangerous but doesn't do anything has more to do with the love of money. The person not wanting to get rid of a bad animal. I had relatives who did have to put down animals because they attacked people... But it wasn't because my relative took pleasure in the bad animal. In fact some of the animals from the same litter were just fine. That Torah precept seems to infer that we are our brothers keeper and are responsible for our own actions and anything in our possession - that is not harm our brothers.

Interviewing Dr. Ross was part of our effort to provide both an old-earth and a young-earth view of the Genesis flood. Before thinking about interviewing Dr. Ross (who is a cosmologist by trade), we had spoken with two other lesser-known but published professional old-earth geologists who were Christians. Both of these individuals unfortunately were extremely discourteous and demeaning about us even entertaining a young-earth creation view of the flood on our broadcasts. One of them told Daniel (interviewer in the video) he needed to repent! We respectfully withdrew our requests to interview them. Dr Ross is very amicable and gracious with those who do not agree with his view, so that was the main reason we featured him. He has also been a big help to Watchman in the past.

god must have really hated everything to flood the world in 2304 BCE and 2348 BCE and then again in 2370 BCE but of course he did it a lot earlier than that in the epic of Gilgamesh Oh no that wasn't your god that was the gods plural Oh hang on have I spoilt your story by giving away that there were people and other gods before yours I should have said spoiler alert.

Many civilizations have flood accounts, which shows that the flood was real. Your dates are not real. The Bible put the flood very early, as people only lived in Mesopotamia at the time. Gods of Gilgamesh are like the Greek gods. Shamash sun god - Anu god of the sky Ishtar goddess of Venus Siduri goddess - Aruru goddess The gods give birth and create in space and time (Bible and Gilgamesh, both tell of a flood, only thing in common).

When someone replies with name-calling or insults, I know the person has not one idea about the topic at hand. Romans 1:20" For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Psalm 19 1-4: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
