In Residence: Sophie Hicks
Фильм және анимация
In 1987, after working as fashion editor at Tatler and Vogue, Sophie Hicks embarked on a career in architecture, going on to design some 100 Chloé boutiques, stores for Nottingham's own Paul Smith, and-most notably-Yohji Yamamoto's stunning Paris flagship. In this new film, the latest of our much-loved In Residence series, the architect guides us around her minimal Kensington home-one that belies its proximity to the beating heart of a major city.
Hicks has described her own style as "cold but warm," making use of rough finishings and sparse, minimal spaces to provide a place for light-both natural and artificial-to play. There is an openness to her approach, being a reflection of her editorial career working under Grace Coddington. It is, then, no great surprise that the British stylist-turned-architect had a surreal encounter with Federico Fellini in 1986, leading to her appearing in his fictional documentary Intervista.

Beautiful home but the filming was so close and tight I felt I could barely see the space. It was very atmospheric but I didn’t feel the architecture was as well captured as I would have hoped.

I think it might be because the house is quite small and intimate itself. Those wide focal lengths distort lines and make everything feel like a cheap rental property or crap TV show.

Here for that LIGHT PHILOSOPHY definitely gonna build a home that allows bright shafts firing the day and a soothingly glow at night
Clean with even the hardest things appearing soft. I love her palette and attention to light. So many special personal touches. I don’t care for clutter but I’d build some kind of structure on top for my damn books.
I like the rawness of the place, the place is very texture centric and gives a feeling of calm and peacefulness
This was stunning, absolutly stunning. I would hate to live there and I would love to visit it. Such sophistication, such minimalisim, such beauty, this is nothing less than the manifestation of her mind... The house that glows at night... and also that voice!

Radekuroshi agreed! A house should fulfill the desires of its owner not to please outsiders, I especially like the fact that the house fits the owner’s characters and personality yet I would personally hate to live in there because it’s simply just not me and that’s ok.

beautiful cinematography along with some very calming soundtrack perfectly resembling the atmosphere the house emits. lovin' it!
The house is beautiful, but what I really wanted to say....@nowness with this videos you inspired me to change my life when I was in a really, really bad shape. It was bad. I realized that I was pushed my events, not by my own decisions. So...in September I start interior design course! yuppie! Thank u!
wow I want to see more!!!! love it !!
i am so in love with in residence films omg mind blowing
So simple yet so elegant
I am in awe.
love the light, the space and the design!
I want to see so much more. This was quite stirring.
I would be so joyfull and exited to live in this house. Even the shadows, because of the architecture, are photogenic. Love Sophies justification for minimalism, I think the same way. Cheers ❤
Incredible house, amazing. I love it!

NOWNESS HAS A BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY, I LOVE THE SCENE IN BEDROOM WHERE TIME LAPSE IS CREATED OF SUN RAYS.
If you watch again you will see some books and some decoration, even art work. Nice and simple!
Very unique and interesting!
Why she didn't have built-in closed storage made for her books and other such items is beyond me. She could also now purchase closed storage for some part of the house.
Simply wow! Straight to my top 10 houses of all time
Having to leave your house to go get a book seems a bit outlandish imo.

I guess the thing I like about houses is the evidence of how people live in them. Without that, they are just structure, space, and light. This house seems like it's been reduced to an aesthetic object.
what cam do you use ?
A stunning house. I wonder if she is related to the late David Hicks? Their styles couldn't be more different.
Tremendous
This is a common style for London homes built to replace outbuildings or occupy other peoples' gardens. It is partially underground because it cannot interfere with the views of the existing terrace homes. It's like living in single space, underground, car park with it's own basement garden, underneath a corporate reception area. Light is used to "animate" the space because it's cramped and gloomy. The British property market is totally distorted by council regulations.
The minimalist that I want to be...

I'm always in a mess literally into my books. Frequently, I feel sorry for the donations that I've made a few years ago. Yep, Marie Kondo wouldn't approve it... But "people are strange"... Even very austere, this house seems very beautiful and sunny. Unfortunately, the film was so straight that we can't have the whole concept and views.

the outside is weird (a garden wall???) but otherwise YES
I want to believe that the house has that space quality that Sophie says, unfortunately Nick Ballon decided to film with those beautiful close shots that barely allow you to appreciate the spaces.
