In Praise of Ulster (Back Home In Ireland).

Музыка

'Back Home In Ireland' was a 1946 film by Ulster actor, folklorist, singer & writer Richard Hayward. This is a presentation of the majority of that film. In it, Hayward shows a visiting American G.I. around Ulster and shares with him the influence that Ulster-Scots had on the history of the USA. In turn the soldier tells of the warm hospitality that the people of Ulster extended to the American forces.
During WWII over 250,000 American troops were based in Northern Ireland. During the 18th century around the same number of Ulstermen & women departed the north of Ireland to make a permanent home in the American colonies.
'In Praise Of Ulster' was a book written by Richard Hayward in 1938. Although born in England, he grew up in Larne, Co. Antrim. Hayward was a lover of all things Irish. His movies, records & books were popular all over Ireland. He was also an Orangeman. He was credited for being the first to make audio recordings of many Orange tunes. His movie, 'The Voice of Ireland' (1936) was the first 'talkie' produced in Ireland, and another movie, 'Devil's Rock' (1938) was the first movie to be fully produced in Northern Ireland.

I'm Irish Catholic living in Australia. I was educated by Marist Brother Vincent Daly in 1973 - 74. Vincent was Australia's chief American and Australian history teacher in charge of university entrance standards. He was a brilliant teacher. He loved his Irish Catholic roots but he was even more rapturous about the Scotch-Irish. He told us no ethnic group has had such a disproportionate effect on the USA and the World - presidents, governors, politicians, captains of industry. One more special claim to fame. Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon. Of course it had to be someone with Ulster DNA. Daly said the Scotch Irish were the ultimate frontiersman.

My grandfather was in the cinema business (Supreme Cinemas Ltd.) and he knew Hayward very well. He put a little money into the film 'The Devil's Rock' in 1937 and Hayward stayed with the family at Rockport House while the film was being shot in Cushendun. The copy of 'The Devil's Rock' you can view on the film archive website I am almost certain was a copy my father rescued from being dumped when the business was being wound up. He gave it to UTV for preservation in the early 80s.

Paul Brown Ulster is a province of Ireland. The people of Ulster are Irish however some are delusional and think they are British. The Ulster Scots are a distinct subgroup of the Irish people, but they’ve turned their back on their rebel heritage and their links with their Gaelic Irish allies. I’m an Irish Gael from Derry and I’m proud to be an ulsterman. You Loyalists have no right to claim Ulster identity as your own considering Ulster was the province you invaded. Even the name Ulster is a Norse interpretation of an Irish name nd the red hand of Ulster is rooted in Gaelic Irish mythology and you have no right to steal our Ulster symbols and corrupt them. The province of Ulster has a strong history of being a bastion of Irish resistance to British rule, being the last part of Ireland to succumb to the British conquest. I don’t care what religion you are but you must accept that Ulster is Irish and that you, whether you like it or not, are a subgroup of the Irish people

@@19grand This Ulster Scots thing is an invention, they do have Some peculiar and archaic English words in what they Call the Ulster Scots language which is essentially English but that is about it. Most of them probably have some form of English heritage as many people came from Northern England during the plantation, yet this is airbrushed out because it doesn't suit the narrative. The leaders didn't really like the idea that they are a mish mash of poor English, Irish, Scottish, Flemish, and Welsh people so over time they have given themselves a false singular Scottish pedigree and gradually appropriated Scottish culture as their own, and Irish were possible.
