IN-DEPTH: The Return of the Revolutionary Girard-Perregaux Constant Escapement

Girard-Perregaux brings back a captivating concept, which was, to many, one of the most interesting technical developments in modern watchmaking; the Girard-Perregaux Constant Escapement. This novel escapement is one of the most sophisticated answers to a crucial question for watchmakers: how to handle the waning driving force supplied by barrels? The first-generation Constant Escapement was a technical marvel, which received much praise from insiders and collectors. It now comes in a new form integrating both aesthetic and technical evolutions. Meet the Girard-Perregaux Neo Constant Escapement.

There are various solutions and inventions, however when it comes to reliability, maintenance, service in general plus costs (most important thing) then you are entering in the rabbit hole...

Wonderful watch and great to see the movement in there. Wouldn’t it sell better had it been, say 41mm?

The movement and the buckling blade system need quite a bit of space so it was already a challenge to size it down to this but maybe a third-gen will see GP push it down to 42 or even 41mm.

it's a marvelous work of art. kind of a shame that the mechanism is always in such large watches though, can't it be sized down to 40mm?

At the stage of the development of this escapement it seems quite impossible. The mechanism is large, and can’t be reduced for now. The brand has reduced the watch from 48 to 45mm, which was already quite a challenge… maybe in the future with more developments.

This is an absolutely fascinating concept, but at 105,000 Euro for what is basically a pocket watch on a strap it's clearly still in development. How long before this escapement is able to be placed in a wristwatch-sized movement (ideally 36mm or smaller) that can be mass produced and sold for an affordable price? Until then, Omega and Grand Seiko remain the only two brands making real-world watches with escapements that are a significant advance on the 300 year old Swiss lever escapement. Incidentally, if this movement can't yet be made smaller, why not just put it in an actual pocket watch? Nearly all of the major developments in functional horology were first implemented in pocket watches. It's silly to try to pretend that something 45mm across is a wristwatch when it would make a perfectly good pocket watch with infinitely greater aesthetic integrity.

I agree with everything you said. But I also see someone like a Jacob & Co collector buying a watch like this. People who dont care spending 100,000k on a satellite dish attached to a strap often have a pretty bad taste when it comes to watches...Bad taste and boredom: can you imagine having enough money to say: "its either 5 Submariners or this GP" Im not rich so, maybe I dont understand the fundamental aesthetics of this kind of watches (my most expensive watch is $800) but even if I was a billionaire I dont see myself buying something this ugly.

@@AngelRivera-fp9md It's extremely interesting as a piece of horology and as an object, so I can see why someone who could afford it might want it on those grounds alone. But what would you do with it? For me at least it would be completely unwearable. So it would be something to be kept and admired, like an art object. But that defeats its actual purpose. At least as a pocket watch it could be carried around.

A technically impressive watch when originally launched. It did have two issues though…too large and ugly. This new one definitely isn’t ugly anymore though, if still a bit too large IMHO.

Well, for now they need the space for the blade-like escapement but maybe they'll manage to reduce the size in the future.
