I easily get a great seal with my long Incubator underquilt. I use a mini carabiner on each of the 4 corners of the quilt and the spreader pole tips. The down baffles on the end are key. I don't have to use the thing to lift the ends up. This is my favorite winter hammock, by far.

Wow favorite winter hammock. I definately think you can dial it in, but I'd definately find it hard to compare against the likes of a built in under quilt and a traditional gathered end quilt for winter. Albeit still way more comfortable than anything I've used.

I own the Happy Medium and I love it! Sleeps like a cot. I have a Chameleon and it is great but nothing like this bridge hammock. I was worried about the spreader bars since I am very claustrophobic but after many trips they don’t bother me at all. I am 6’3” around 220 and still have tons of room. I also have HG quilts…mine are extra long and wide and they fit the Towns End perfect…I have been in the upper teens in my 20 degree quilts and I have toasty. You can also easily add a sleeping pad super easy and it lays perfect. Best decision I made was buying this hammock.

I built my own double layer bridge hammock using walking poles as spreader bars ( they fit into webbing "pockets". 454 grams

Now thats the way to do it! Ultralight and probably really comfy with a double layer.

@@AbundantAdventures indeed! Flexible setup too so I can use a foam mat and/or UQ depending on needs; I simple insert wood dowels into the trekking poles to make them rigid

The Ridge Runner is a good bridge hammock, but i am curious why you would not want to use this hammock?

Very informative even for us ground dwellers 😉 That spreader bar could be troublesome if you have coyotes jumping on your chest!!

Good review. I'm happy with my Chameleon and don't think I'd want to deal with the extra weight or quirks of a bridge hammock. I'm not a stomach sleepers so that's another reason.

Basically sums up the review. If your happy in a gathered end and you don't want to lay completely flat for a stomach sleep...then I'd pass. But there are a ton of people out there I know that will deal with the little quirks for a lay flat stomach sleeping setup.

Thanks for the great review. What wool jacket were you wearing, it looks incredible?

Its a weather wool jacket. That's a jacket to be reviewed at the end of my thorough testing. I'd highly recommend you wait until my review comes out on it...

Good information but am wondering if you can use an air mattress on this bridge hammock to augment the underquilt temperature range??

  • @AbundantAdventures

    @AbundantAdventures

you could do that but it poses its own challenges. For one, its more tippy with an air mattress and I also think the rating of the mattress is compromised at that point since you'll need to deflate it quite a bit to work. For this hammock specifically it would also push you closer to the poles running across. This particular hammock I had made to be ultra light and pretty small. On the other hand ---- If you got the bigger bridge hammock that Towns End sells then you would probably be perfectly fine. He sells one for big guys that is absolutely luxury to sleep in and that has the size and to accommodate a pad much better. The bars would also be much higher up as well. Hope that helps.

I get the idea of the bar spreading the shoulders but looks like it would stop side sleeping, also I don't want to scoot under it.

When side sleeping I just scooted down just a tad and the bar was more over my head than shoulders. But I agree the bar in the way is annoying. I was surprised it wasn't more annoying than it was. I got used to it I guess.

It solves some people's problems but if your comfy without it then I'd say keep it simple.

Why don’t you just open up the Underquilt to “square” and just loop each corner over the bars. That’s what I do in my ridgerunner. It’s works amazing with no extra messing with it. No adjustments needed

  • @AbundantAdventures

That won't work on this setup. The ridge runner is made for that setup and so is the dutchware banyan.
