With the UX 300e, Lexus finally entered the full-EV segment. Now at last it offers a decent driving range. Jonathan Crouch reports.
Ten Second Review
From launch in 2020, the first Lexus EV, the UX 300e, was hobbled by restricted driving range. But with a new battery offering up to 280 miles between charges, it's now much better placed to reward a thoughtful buyer prepared to think a little more laterally. In the compact SUV segment, there are cheaper full-electric models than this one, some of which still offer greater driving range. But the all-electric driving distance you now get here will probably be sufficient for most suburban users and there are admirably few compromises in terms of interior packaging, plus a very high quality feel.
Background
Lexus has been a pioneer in vehicle electrification since introducing the RX 400h in 2005, but back in 2020, this UX 300e model was the brand's very first battery-electric vehicle. It was based on a full-electric version of the Toyota C-HR only offered in China and was the first of a number of production vehicles the brand decided to make under its 'Lexus Electrified' banner.
The marque was certainly well placed in create EVs, having built over 1.6 million electrified self-charging hybrids in the last fifteen years. That means breakthrough Lexus technologies like the power control unit, the battery management system and the electric motor have been tried and tested over many millions of miles. The UX300e though, proved to be a bit of a disappointment in its original form, the early 54.3kWh battery only able to take the car 196 miles between charges, a distance easily improved upon by every serious class rival. Hence the upgrade that's given us the 72.8kWh version of this car that we look at here.

Hello and thanks for all your high quality reviews. For fun I have compared the price for Lexus UX300e in Great Britain and Norway, and I became a little surpriced because we got extra taxes on evs in Norway from January 2023. Price comparison after the exchange rate may not always give the right picture, but after I converted the Norwegian prices for Lexus UX300e from Norwegian Kroner to British Pounds the price for the Takomi model in Norway is at aprox 40.800 Pounds with a start price for the lowest trim at 34.400 Pounds. In Norway Lexus has always called the highest trim for Luxury, and the lowest edition is called Premium, with several editions between this two. But Lexus Premium edition has a spec you rarely will find on top models from many brands. Lexus has been No 1 in Autindex in Norway for 12 years in a row, and had last year the highest rank in all sub-items. We are a "Toyota family" and we are very pleased with the quality and service from Toyota, but we have seen that Lexus service is at a even higher level. My wife has an UX300e and is very pleased with the way it works and the real life range. May be she will change to the newest model for better winter range. Thanks for the most honest reports in the industry, one of a few always telling the truth of all cars I have seen you have tested.

Hello and thanks for your all good car reports. As you know Lexus and Toyota through their hybrid cars have developt a normal brake feeling with full regenerating in their brake pedal and by this are making it possible to use all regen energy without using different regen modes, and they have made it possible to drive their electric cars like people have driven their cars with comcastion or hybrid engines. Because Tesla didn't manage to create such smooth feelins with regen on the normal brake pedal they came with their one pedal driving which it seems that both ev manufactorer and customers now think they have to use for full regen of the braking energy. But by use of the brake pedal also for regen you will not have the unnecessary speed changes that consume energy and make the travel choppy and uncomfortable for the passengers. Thanks.

Lexus make the best built cars in the world end of. But Toyota/ Lexus don't really put much effort in to EV's and put most of their tech into other fuel sources. I would have a UX hybrid in a heartbeat!!. Good review.

Why on earth would anyone buy a modern ev in Europe that didn't have CCS. Chademo is a dying standard.
