In-Cylinder pressure - Pico WPS vs less expensive sensors. Also can a cheap 150 scope do the trick!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I compare the "flagship" Pico WPS 500x to a few much less expensive pressure transducers. The sensors used in this video are around $150 or less (June 2022). I demonstrate the pattern with each sensor on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with a 5.3L engine. Also, while I have the sensors hooked up, I compared the pattern from a high-quality 12-bit Pico 4423 to a much less expensive 8-bit Pico 2204a ($150) to see if you can perform in-cylinder pressure testing with a less expensive scope AND a less expensive pressure sensor.

    im from peru...thanks...I am a student and an oscilloscope like picoscope is unattainable for me, with inflation in my country everything has become expensive.... I am going to do my best to make myself a pressure transducer with honeywell.... greetings and successes teacher..............saludos desde peru

    Thanks again for the break down. There is a Chinese version that works really well also. Similar to the WPS for about 300 bucks

    Hi, That was an interesting video in which different sensors and scopes are featured. However, I was wondering if you get hold of a sensor from ATS - Bernie Thompson- and compare its response and vertical resolution with Pico's WPS500.

    Thank you very much for this informative demonstration. I have some of these sensors and they are all 1/8'' NPT but in the market, I can't find any of the adaptors that you use in this demonstration. Can you please help me with this?

    The higher compression pressure during snap throttle is from the ingestion of more air to the cylinder,it is not back pressure. With modern cylinder heads and intake manifolds flowing more air this is the result, more power.

    For the 8-bit scopes, you’ll need the non-automotive version of Pico. You can get it at picotech.com.

    Back when the vantage scope came out I bought all the pressure transducers and cables. Haven't used them in years since the Vantage died. not sure how to wire it. Do you have description of pin out for the connector

  • @siuautomotive

    @siuautomotive

    I’m not sure the pin out. I’m pretty sure those snapon sensors alter amperage, not voltage. They likely switch between 5-20mA, which is a common range. With the pico, you can still use that setup, but you have to feed it 5v through 250 ohms. Then you can measure the voltage drop across the resistor and make either a math channel or create a “custom probe”. That sounds like a good project for another video!

    @@siuautomotive That does sound like a great subject for another video. The SSI transducers you are using look identical to the ones I have, round three pin connector, shape of the body, everything. Do the SnapOn transducers you're talking about meet that same description? I've got a range of transducers that go from reading vacuum and low pressure on up to 5000 lbs. It'd be nice to make use of them.

    For those who read my reply about Rotkee transducers: they are bad, they brake after 10 uses: the black "ground" wire burns and melts. I checked the resistance of wires, check connections, checked clamps for power supply, etc, and established that transducer itself creates super-high current when pressure is 50 psi. As soon as pressure drops to zero, the burning stops. I posted reviews on Google sites about it.
