Dinner ladies is such an uplifting comedy, the cast the script and music , it will live forever .

Victoria Wood's authorised biography "Lets do it", is interesting and revealing. It uncovers a very complex woman who was a massive talent, but who could also be sullen, difficult and obsessive. Surprisingly, Julie Walters talks about how her she had not been to Victoria's house for many years before she died and their friendship had turned into a working relationship instead. She also mentioned how she would never discuss anything sensitive with Victoria as she would have no qualms about using it in a sketch. Jealousy seems to have been a factor in their relationship at times, and Victoria was reportedly pleased when she did "As seen on TV" that it was no longer billed as Wood and Walters. Celia Imre echoed that, and said she sometimes felt bullied. It seems that Duncan Preston was the only one who had any semi regular social contact with her, but he mentioned how he had to read for "Pat and Margaret" as the role had been meant for Jim Broadbent and Victoria had "no great faith in him". Julie Walters had been having a relationship with Duncan and had to intervene and ask Victoria to give him the part. Dawn French also recalled how difficult it was to work with Victoria and talked about when Victoria came to visit her in Cornwall, moaned an awful lot about her room and when Dawn took her to a beach, she sulked and said she "didn't like beaches". Thelma Barlow, Anne Reid, Duncan Preston, Julie Walters and Celia Imre all confirmed how incredibly difficult it was to work on dinner ladies because of Victoria's obsessiveness. It seems that Victoria was deeply scarred by her childhood and her very neglectful mother - a recurring theme that runs through a lot of her work. Apparently Victoria was very messy as a child and had rotten teeth because nobody was caring for her. Her childhood was something she never fully recovered from.

I met Victoria after her show in Birmingham in 1993. She was quite shy. I treasure her autograph. I performed I can't do it ,on my hen night with a friend, we dressed in striped pyjamas and a winciette nightie...we bought the house down...Thank you Victoria, miss your huge personality.xxx

Interestingly, in Victoria's biography "Let's do it", Julie mentions how she hadn't been to Victoria's house for years and that their friendship had instead become a "working relationship".

I can’t imagine what it’s like for Julie Walters, to lose her best friend. It’s obvious that she loved her, and misses her so much! I miss her, I couldn’t watch anything with her in it, for about a year or so, as I would feel so sad, and tearful. Victoria was so talented. Housewife, 49 is an amazing story. She was great as Eric Morecambe’s mum. That day we sang, is based on a true story and is well written and well acted. So enjoyable to watch. I watch the whole box set of Dinnerladies at least once a year. And I love An audience with Victoria Wood, it makes me laugh every time I watch it.

She had no friends. There were cast mates. She didn't tolerate bs from anyone. She loved it when her cast mates did the dialogue in her way. Let them no in no certain uncertain terms If she didn't. Dawn French discovered this while they working on comic relief on sketch. French wanted to write the dialogue but Victoria Wood insisted on writing her own lines. Which wood rewrote. Up to and including the day off the sketch. It was a very funny sketch. But it irritated dawn French. But French was right of course when she called wood a genius and called her the queen of comedy

​@@markdaly1648 Dawn French also mentioned an occasion when Victoria went to visit her in Cornwall and was a bit of a nightmare, moaning about her room and sulking when Dawn took her to a beautiful beach for a walk, saying "I don't like beaches". Apparently Dawn lost her rag with her somewhat.

I sobbed when she passed I grew up with her, she was a part of my teenage years she helped guide me and helped me love myself.

A great talent of Britain, gone. Thank goodness her material is still out there, to be discovered by the likes of myself, here in the US. KZread is invaluable that it brings great talent like Victoria Wood to an audience worldwide, and to see a candle that burned so brightly is now blown out. Of course, I heard of Julie Walters due to Educating Rita, her talent is phenomenal as well. Her close collaboration with Victoria Wood brought out what talent Julie has, playing all sorts of different characters. Those who worked with Victoria knew that this was monumental, brilliant work. I thank KZread so that we can watch such programmes, and that generations discover the genius of Victoria Wood.

Dinner Ladies is well worth watching again. She was amazing . . .

Julie Walters owes her whole career to Victoria Wood. I hope she said that to Victoria before she died. ❤ 🙏 ❤

RIP, Victoria Wood. I am a big fan, and I miss her so much. She was a brilliantly talented actress and writer, and a champion for so many other women. She is unique and irreplaceable.

Maxine Peake: "People still carry on discovering her." I discovered her about 6 weeks ago, and I'm a bit obsessed. As of today I've seen Dinnerladies 11 times through, plus all of her stand-up that I've found on YT and her Victoria Wood series.

I envy you so much! Victoria got me through a very grim time in the 90s when I was a young teenager and on and on, always making me laugh and giving me some hope that I might be ok to just be me. And in time I was. But I’ll always have time for her, and she is greatly missed.

I discovered Victoria Wood by accident, here on KZread, watching Dinner ladies, and seeing the brilliant humour, the acting, everything was just phenomenal. It is so hard how to describe the brilliance of her work. Working in restaurants, it showed a side that does happen in real life, although in a comical way. And yes, I can watch these programmes over and over, and still feel the same way when watching that very first time.

Mistakenly did not watch first time around has I thought it was a catering documentary. Having watched both series several times over the past 4 years, I have to put this sitcom, slightly ahead of Fawlty Towers. What a cameo walk on part by Julie Walters .Rest in Peace,

Great being able to see three of her close friends speak so openly about Victoria Wood, thanks for sharing....too bad the interviewer either misses the point or gets it wrong...over and over again....it comes across almost like the other three are having to defend Victoria Wood in an effort to compensate for his generic inadequate interviewing style ( or lack of it )

Wow. I only just discovered Victoria Wood and I am hooked, and pleased as heck. What a gift!

I always thought Victoria wrote very complexed scripts if you know what I mean, if you weren't careful you'd miss something incredibly funny, she was as sharp as a knife, ie the many times in Dinner Ladies she'd stutter and say ' ooh what's that word, sounds like ' then she'd say another word which has nothing to do with the first, utterly brilliant

I watch Dinnerladies regularly and even 20 years later, there's still something I've missed or forgotten. I laugh every time

Paddy O Connell ( suit!) missed the point, that Maxine had to point out to him, that she might have been ‘Northern’ but her comedy was universal!!! 🤔🙄😏

The wonderful lady, Victoria Wood.. would have probably laughed out loud at being referred to as VW. (VW Beatles..lol, yeah I know the spelling) The engine was in the back and used to overheat, the bonnet was/is a bit rotund and surfers ADORE them. Victoria was such a great person because she observed people and put that bit of herself into it.

I dream of having just a breath of her wit and talent. Such a terrible loss to the entire world of humour, music, comedy, and drama. I deeply miss her. RIP, Ms. Wood. My respect. 😢❤😢

Victoria reminds me of how Lennon and Mcartney first met - its because there was this genius yet to be revealed producing top class work time after time. She also knew who to pick as her actors to perform her work. Dinner Ladies is a masterpiece. Line after line from every member of the cast - rolling out at machine gun rate. One of the best comedy lines ever - "Bren, can you spread em for Tony"? when asked to butter the toast. Its up there alongside - Eric and Earnie's "they are the right notes but not necessarily in the right order"!!

She made comedy so real you could relate to her characters so easy you even had or new people like that a great loss to are tvs but she will always live on in my playist :-)

Really interesting. Especially the section about the link between her comedy and her other work. The history of British comedy is littered with examples of comedians and comic actors who failed to break out of the straitjacket of comedy success - Tony Hancock, Harry H Corbett and Kenneth Williams (in their different ways) spring to mind. Victoria Wood is a rare example of a comedy genius who managed to branch out successfully into straight drama, directing, etc. . . .

I bemoan her leaving us so soon. Thank the stars for all her videos. Dinner Ladies & her Entertainment evenings for other comedic geniuses. 😢👏🙏🏼🌹🤣

I think Maxine Peake is brilliant in whatever she is in. She is so versatile. I had no idea she was in Dinner ladies even though I had seen some episodes. She is brilliant in Stephen Moffat productions. Victoria Wood is/was a genius. RIP lovely Ms. Wood.

Victoria remains an absolute favourite of ours, even here in Cape Town, South Africa. Watched them all over and over, on VHS in those days. Her expressions and humour live on in our daily repartee!

Christ, you’d have to wonder if we were discussing a male writer/comic/songwriter we’d be discussing his interest and views on sex. These god awful throwback male interviewers need to go the way of the dinosaurs. 🦖🙄 All this proves is that Victoria was a pioneer then and a pioneer now. 🙏🏼

I gobble up everything I find by her on youtube. So sweet to see the love felt by these terrific actresses for Victoria. I'd love to know who the gentleman is. Fascinating to hear these reminiscences.

It's Piers Wenger, an executive-producer of some renown. As mentioned in the video, he commissioned Housewive 49. On a side note, he also co-executive-produced the first two years of Matt Smith's Doctor Who.

It is so lovely to hear you say that. Obviously I never knew her personally, but felt for sure that she was one of life's really good guys. The public didn't know she was ill, so it came as a huge shock to us. She was always so full of fun.

Yes, she does. Similar to Belinda Carlisle of the Go Go's. Who also started off plump at a young age, only to drop the baby fat and let her features shine growing refined and truly beautiful.

We've lost all our comedy geniuses over the last 15-20 years. The 20th century was the peak of film, TV and comedy. Now comedy isnt clever comedy, no word play or double entondra, it's just a Donald Trump joke, or being mean about celebrities

To much talking from the nonentities, not enough from Julie and Maxine!

The reason Victoria Wood was so very fascinated by sex is that she didn't consider herself a sexy or attractive person. She had rather an outsiders view of sex, or certainly sex as it was often portrayed in TV or on the stage because she'd never been exposed to that kind of attention, nor might she have welcomed or accepted it if she had. A funny actress can revert to being a woman of many aspects, including sexy or seductive or even vampish if they so choose, but Victoria Wood was a funny writer and so didn't have that facility. In decades of writing and performing she NEVER ONCE wrote herself as character with 'conventional' female sex-appeal. Indeed, though she was capable of writing parts for other actresses with a certain 'unconventional' sexual allure, (even at that she never assigned the 'sexy' role to herself. ) Her problem was that she was viewed as more funny than female, a fact she either didn't have the facility or the desire to alter. I think that perhaps bothered her more than she ever admitted, even to herself... Audience rather fancied quite a lot of her characters, but never any of the ones she played herself, which were invariably grotesques. (Almost and paradoxically, as if she knew audiences would laugh at her if she tried to 'play sexy'?) Even in 'dinnerladies' her character in season 2 is romantically involved with another character, yet there is not a smidgen of sexuality nor chemistry visible between the pair on the screen. She could certainly write about sex, though probably not about real sex, but she herself certainly couldn't play it. xx SF

Victoria Wood's work was amazing and we were so fortunate to have her creative talent for as long as we did. I agree the host was terrible on this day. I really don't like it when someone throws in a disturbing remark (injustice against women in Saudi) maybe for affect and/or to get the attention back to them. When it's the host, it's like an alcohol induced bilious attack by a birthday party clown.

I appreciate Maxine Peak has done well in recent years but I have no idea why she would be on this? her character was hardly central to Dinnerladies. Where's Celia Imrie? Jim Baroadbent? Duncan Preston? Peake is sat there in everything bar the Communist Workers hat FFS - no time for her whatsoever.
