In this scene, the two cars we see are F3 cars dressed up to resemble actual cars in the race that year. The chase car is a Ford GT40. The camera is a Panavision 65 camera. If you watch the supplementary extras with the Gran Prix DVD, you'll see the mounting system required to attach one of these beasts to the cars for the in car shots.

By the way, all grand prix races and people in that movie are fictional. That means Jean Pierre's death never really happened or even existed. Although cameo appearances of REAL race car drivers at that time did make an appearance. Graham Hill for example. He was shown in that one scene where that one guy went crazy over alchohol after the race in... either Zandvoort or Spa.

It's true that the characters in the film are fictional and their racing scenes are staged, however, live footage of the actual races in the 1965 season was used in the racing action sequences. Graham Hill and Phil Hill had credited parts in the movie. Graham Hill has some spoken lines, at the post race party in Monaco and at the driver's meeting at Monza. Phil Hill also had some lines, at the Brands Hatch race, he exclaims when seeing that Pete Aron's car is leaking fuel and again when it catches fire. He also drove the GT40 chase car.

@@constipatedparker5879 It's called LIFE, Constipated - and Grand Prix racing isn't a 'safe space' sport. For your information, it was the promoters and circuit owners who were reckless by failing to enact (expensive) safety standards. The drivers were just trying to make a living. You can't be 'reckless' and drive a F1 car - you won't live long enough to become reckless. These men, and yes they were all men, were extremely capable and thanks to the likes of Jackie Stewart (et al) were instrumental in pushing for elevated safety standards. This boomer concludes by saying : KISS MY ASS! As hard as it may be for you to understand..... Those were indeed great days before subsequent generations fucked everything up. Take a look around.... I rest my case! ✌

@@jimw.4161 racing is supposed to be racing, not being incinerated and burned to a crisp alive while trapped inside of a magnesium and lead-fuel coffin because neither the sport you're racing for and the people managing your team cares for your safety as a driver. if the players of your sport need to put their lives not on the line, but straight inside the noose every time they play the sport, then maybe somethings wrong with it and needs to be examined and fixed. i'm not saying they weren't good drivers, by all means they were very good drivers and this goes same for the cars, the cars were very good for the time but this time is long gone and should never come back. (its not totally unsafe though, im sure the hay bales can stop a 250 km/h racing car from plowing into a crowd)

@@finnegan6464 F1 racing will never be a completely safe sport. However, as you say, safety standards have risen considerably since the 1960s - thanks largely to the efforts of drivers like Jackie Stewart. Phil Hill drove a Lotus 25 equiped with a forward camera for the generic racing scenes that didn't involve the actors. While it's true the actors drove F-3 cars and the camera car was a modified GT40. This is neither of those.

Kinda like thrill seekers or going into combat. Don't compare it to racing today which is very safe and rarely results in injury or death because of the safety systems put in place.

Clive ... the cars are not original F1 cars, but the Montecarlo track is the original one. In many parts of the track there were no guard rails, so if an F1 car came out of the track it ended up against a wall or a street lamp and to "protect" the most dangerous points they had put some hay bales, which in the case of Bandini, they take immedialtely fire making the situation worse. Safety was just an option.

Gonna quote myself here; "No matter how much materials you put next to you, the lateral forces will always apply to the whole car." In open wheel cars, smashing against the wall sideways can result in a tyre hitting your head, (see Ayrton Senna, he would've walked away from his fatal 1994 crash if the tyre hadn't smashed his head). There will ALWAYS be a huge amount of pain when crashing ESPECIALLY sideways. It's safer to crash from the front, since then the forces have to travel through more.

Some comments here that they are F3 cars made to look like F1 of the day. However, this may not be accurate. I know that on some tracks Phil Hill drove a F1 car with a camera mounted on the nose in the actual race. The scenes at Spa as the car drove into the rain storm was filmed during the race in this manner. Certainly there were F3 cars dressed as F1 but I thought they were for the scenes where the actors were shown driving.

The single most interesting fact about "Grand Prix" was that it guaranteed the future for the Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Team. He painted his cars up like the fake Japanese team, for money, and he did trie very hard to get it all sorted to race properly, but the Ford V8 and the Serenisima V8 were both too heavy and lacking in power. Bruce was always great at getting what he needed when he needed it.

They actually used normal film cameras, with custom made rigs and remote control turrets to change camera angles. Movies at the time did not use video technology at all, which couldn't have provided the level of definition as you could see here, especially if they had to make the equipment compact enough to fit on a race car without compromising quality, which was already marginal at best. The moon landing footage was very grainy compared to what was achievable in film then.

Neither can calculations. Pain can only be measured once it is experienced. So the crash tests won't do anything vs pains. Look up some crashes w/ interviews after.
