In a Violent Nature - Film Review (with director Chris Nash)
Фильм және анимация
In a Violent Nature is a fascinating subversion of the classic slasher film. It follows a killer, “Johnny” through his point-of-view as he stalks his prey through the gorgeous Ontario woods. Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio with no musical score, director Chris Nash took some real risks here, and they paid off. I was fortunate enough to chat with him about the project, and he shared some insight into the production process.

Thank you for the kind words! Nash was great to talk to - incredibly humble.
I loved the tranquil walking and point of view. Great flick

Rooting for a sequel with just a little less walking. It really is so much fun watching a simplistic story play out in a different angle than we are used to

It's a nature walk with your friendly neighbourhood killer.
I believe this could be a new genre into horror with the whole killer perspective. Because let’s be real is horror fans are fans of the killer. We can’t wait for a face reveal etc. I wanna see more of these

I think there will definitely be a few that pop up in the next several years. Likely not as "experimental" or "arthouse" as In a Violent Nature, but still incorporating the "killer POV" style.

Instead of being Johnny's perspective, it felt to me the way it was filmed like someone was secretly stalking HIM and videoing his crimes! Try watching it again from that point of view and it's even better! 👍

@@gavvo-7640 I agree that the "Killer's POV" is a bit reductive. I think it's more accurate to consider it "Nature's POV", which is similar to how you're looking at it!
Totally loved this movie! the kills are gory as hell ... I was shouting out "Please be a woodchipper"... turned out to be even better!!! And that yoga scene... just wow!!!! I found the slow-burn very suspenseful and the sound design without music was awesome, just hearing footsteps and bushes being brushed past as the killer makes his way through the forest was great. The ending is a bit of a low-point in some respects, I think it went on a bit too long, but it has definitely left it open for a sequel. Overall, a really well shot movie. I watched it on download as I live in the UK but it opens in cinema's here next week so will be seeing it on the big screen for sure! 👍

Love it! Definitely worth catching in theatres. It's pretty brilliant how the sounds of nature essentially serve as the "score" for the film.

Loved it even though third act felt a little botched and too ambiguous. I don' know why but while watching it, I kept reminiscing about Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) for some reason. Great analysis and subscribed btw.

Appreciated! I think many share your feelings about the third act.
Saw it at the drive ins last night my only gripe was the lighting was bad due to the screen but i loved it. Felt the tension when following johnny was absent but thrown into high gear during the scenes when focusing on the teens and of course the ending. Loved it though great work Nash

Definitely a major shift when we change POVs. The sounds of nature serving as the "score" added to this as well. Very clever!

Beautiful, brilliantly creative film. I don't get the "slasher" label it's getting. I feel that it's essentially arthouse horror. Must-see for cinephiles and horror fans

Nash views it as an "ambient slasher". Siloing it into a marrow genre certainly isn't helpful! I would tend to agree with your description.

It's one of a kind!
This movie was a lot of fun. Did not like the ending at all. I felt it took the air out of an otherwise great horror experience. They should have stayed on theme and kept with whatever Johnny did next. It would have been a perfect horror if they stuck that last act.

If Terrence Malik made a slasher movie, this is how is would look, and that's a compliment.

Definitely! One of Nash's core influences.

I loved this movie 🎉🎉🎉

I thought the ending was brilliant. I could see why people don’t like it the same way kids don’t like that 3rd grader that dresses just a little bit different.

Experimental films might not be for you, and that's okay! This one won't work for everyone.
That ending made my overall opinion of it plummett. Horrible to ruin your film with a bad ending like that.
