Blackcoat's daughter already made me believe about the capability of Oz Perkins to create such a haunting atmosphere around his films which lacks in recent horror movies! The marketing of this movie in itself is so brilliant even if the movie would not be that good, I don't care, whomever is behind this marketing deserves an Oscar! The fact that all in all we already have 8 minutes trailers in total and we still don't know about the look of Nic is amazing......
@PointsofReview

The marketing will get people in the seats - but I fear that the general audience will have a pretty poor reaction as a result. It's definitely not a film for everyone!

@@PointsofReviewI totally agree with both sentiments, the marketing is top tier, but many people will think they are walking into the newest movie within The Conjuring universe.. FWIW, I LOVE Oz Perkins, and LOVED this future-classic of the genre (it’s neck and neck with The Blackcoat’s Daughter for “Best Ozzie P Film” in my book!!)…

Thank you for the comment! Can't wait for Perkins' future work. Definitely a talent.
I just watched this last night at my local Theater and it was brilliant, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was constantly searching the frame for clues or for someone to be standing in the shadows ready to jump at you. I love how they live by the ‘less is more’ motto and withhold a lot of information so you’re kept guessing. I wasn’t too into the plot explanation that happens at one point or some of the twists, but overall this is a very effective horror for me and definitely will get a hold of a physical copy when it comes out.

My hype was through the roof for this movie after seeing the marketing, and it squandered my enjoyment. Especially after how much I liked the Blackcoat's Daughter. Longlegs is not "the scariest movie in a decade", nor is it "highly disturbing". It is a modern rendition of Silence of the Lambs, and I don't understand how some people are saying it's not. It was marketed to be a different movie, similar to how they did "It Comes at Night". They marketed that as a horror movie and it turned out to be an apocalypse movie.
@PointsofReview
20 күн бұрын
I found it to be pretty disturbing, but I agree that much of the marketing about it being "the scariest movie of the decade" is quite misleading. The general audience will likely be disappointed with it, but I still think it demonstrates some fairly strong directorial instincts from Perkins.

I love Nic Cage and I am a huge fan of good horror (not franchise or slasher stuff). I would love to see this in a theater, but I don't have a friend who likes horror and it's not a film that I would be comfortable seeing alone. Going to movies by myself used to be my favorite treat, but now that I am old (almost 77) and I have to move slowly and park in handicapped spaces due to polyarthritis. I don't feel confident about seeing a horror film alone, even during the day. There are so many nutballs and just plain thieves that seek out weaker people to prey upon. So sadly, I will have to wait for the DVD or On Demand. In the meantime I have Blackcoat's Daughter on my DVR and I haven't seeen Pig yet so I can see that for $2.99 On Demand. One character that you didn't mention is Lee's mother played by Alicia DeWitt. She is an actress I enjoy and she doesn't work a lot. I hear that she is very good in Longlegs. Thank you for your thoughtful and balanced review. I have heard from other reviewers as well that Longlegs is a film that gets to you in a way that requires processing over time. I enjoy character driven stories far more than plot heavy ones, especially in the horror genre. It's not exactly a horror movie, or even a thriller, but Dream Scenario is Nic's most recent film where he creates a character that we are both drawn to and repelled by. It's a remarkable film that I recommend to literally everyone. I will not be a bit surprised if Nic is nominated for an Academy Award for this performance. This is Kristoffer Borgli's first English language movie and he has a promising career ahead of him. I smashed those Like and Subscribe buttons! 😀

I think that might be a bit of an oversimplification. I will say, its "style" is incredibly strong - the art direction, editing, camera movement, sound design, grading, etc., all are phenomenal. Some of the plot "beats", dialogue, and performances are not to that same level, but there's still enough "substance" to elevate it over similar pictures.

@@PointsofReview is there enough substance to *truly* put it up with the greats like hereditary, get out, etc? does the screenplay reinvent anything?

@@filmbrat1 No it doesn't reinvent anything but it's a great addition to the serial/cult genre

@@ZachAttackReviews i saw it thursday. i completely agree. i can see why the screenplay wasn’t the strong suit of early reviews lol. nothing wrong with it, it’s just not insanely unique as far as screenplay
Are there lots of jumpscares?
@PointsofReview

Not in the traditional sense, no! The sound design does definitely have some "percussive" beats that might elicit a jump, but it doesn't lean into any "cheap" jump scares.
Is this going to compete with Terrifier 3 and Nosferatu as THE horror hit of the year do you think?

I think they each have their own niche - I'm personally most excited for Nosferatu.
I’m not doubting how amazing this movie is but all the reviews are using the same key words like “ it will get under your skin long after the movie” I’m starting to think the people who seen the early screenings are insensitived or encouraged to give it a great rating based on bias but none the less I’ll find out myself lol

I can assure you that's not the case (at least for me)! I think it's just the only way to describe the "feeling". It's a slower, more creeping "haunt".
Maybe I went in expecting something else, but i found the film very interesting and visually stunning. But - in terms of horror/creepy I think it really missed the mark. I am a wuss.., like I’m so easily scared. And I just found myself not at all scared/creeped. I’m going to give it another watch.

@@markdoherty1436 Yeah, I definitely don't think it's a "scary" film, but I did find it to slowly creep and affect me
I liked the film but it wasn't great. Once the film moved from serial killer drama to supernatural horror, I checked out a bit. Why not keep the story grounded? People are far more frightening than supernatural threats.
Soooo for those who have seen it…….Longlegs or Hereditary?

Imo, hereditary is overrated. So is ari Astor. Hereditary didn't get good until the last 10-12 minutes of the flick. It was just weird up until that point. I just don't have much hope for these new horror movies. Idunno why.
would love to see it but not in theaters in Finland = fucking bullshit. Have to wait for digital.

Distribution agreements/strategies are beyond frustrating for the viewer. I think it's looking like a potential September digital release.
