i think the 2-side TNTLs qualify as improv; neither side knows what the other will come out as, so the funnies have to be merged together on the spot

Very interesting, I didn't know that there was so much to analyze in these videos. Now I'll forever notice every time they do the "pre-justifying lines" thing. I would say the biggest problem they face in these scenarios are the lines selected for them, because they tend to be very specific, and a lot of the time they include the names of people who are not even in the scene, so it's very difficult to make lines like that work. Honestly, I think the way they (mostly Tommy) managed to salvage the second scene, by finding an explanation for why they kept talking about a bunch of random people was pretty clever, and basically the best they could do with what they were given.

you should react to when they do the "try not to laugh Blind pairs" videos I think it is so fun how two people come out in two completely different characters and just has to make the scene work together.

If you found Smosh in the last year, I say go after the funeral roasts. I found Smosh during the pandemic lockdowns, June 2020, so I don't know much about the history of Smosh outside of what gets brought up, but I do miss those who've left since. I found your channel an hour ago. I totally agree with the criticisms of Smosh Pit Theater of essentially changing the subject to fit every new random ine.

Hi! I’m an Autistic performer who felt discouraged by criticism in improv classes, I can see where the instructor was coming from now! I guess I just needed someone to explain why something rarely works and what to do instead. I definitely plan to watch all of your future improv (and hopefully other) content. A video I’d like to point you towards is Smosh Pit’s “Idiots Present” video starring Damien Haas talking about exorcism. He didn’t really break and rolled with the punches pretty well. I would love to see what your opinion and constructive criticisms on that would be! 😁

I really like these improv reacts to smosh/reacts to improv. I love improv but there are no improv options in this small town so I live vicariously through social media 😅 I do use the advice in basic conversation to be funnily though, love making people laugh

Yeah, as much as I love watching these because I like them, they really don't know *how* to play those lines. Besides the fact that, as other commenters mentioned, a lot of times they choose comments that are hard to play off, they rarely try to actually incorporate them into the scenes. I think they may have naturally started leaning into that behavior because they've done quite a few of these before and have often hit the wall of having unusable lines, so I think the producers could take a note here as much as the players.

The biggest issue with this format to me are the lines/comments they choose to use. They always try to come up with basic improv-style scenes to use; as you do in a lot of short-form improv, but then they have to incorporate hyper-specific lines with the cast members names in them. As a result, almost every line breaks the scene because they aren't really random lines anymore, so they lose out on a lot of flexibility they could have. Now they are in a scene as random people talking about Smosh Cast members for some reason and thus they never really come together as something cohesive. They either need to not take lines with their names in them, or they need to play scenes as heightened versions of themselves, otherwise it's just a boring scene about nothing with random funny comments about them. They do the best they can with it, but they need to give themselves more to work with.

I think your second suggestion at the end is on the right track. They don’t even need to play heightened versions of themselves or change the situations. They just need to have their character’s names be their own name. It would actually open up as an option to justify the mention of other cast members names with what relation they have to the characters in the scene. Like Shayne did here calling back to Spencer being one of his troublemaker friends.

@@EvanSawyer4 That could help as well, but that still hits on what Katelyn is saying about referring to other characters outside the scene. It makes the scene no longer about the characters you see. Overall, I think it works fine enough for Smosh since people watching know the cast and the whole thing is about the comments, but as improv it doesn't technically work out as well as it seems like it should. We laugh at the comments themselves much more than we do at the scenes. Sometimes they match up, but the hyper-specificity of them makes that challenging. They're still fun to watch, but looking back at it, you can see how it doesn't technically make much sense, and that's still ok.

You should definitely watch their try not to laugh videos. Their improv is more natural

I agree with not pre-justifying blind lines, it should really be done sparingly, but every time I've played it, I would be the only person who even avoided pre-justifying. Everyone else did every single time, and when it's done THAT much it can really kill any momentum or identity in the scene

@@jacobbau8328 They're adding on to her original point by adding how common it is from their experience and how it can impact the scene/other performers as a whole, which both show how helpful pointing this bad habit out can be. Also, improv is a team sport. Focus on yourself is a nice sentiment and all that, but your partners are just as responsible for the scene as you are and it can be frustrating to see it fall flat due to no fault of your own.

I understand the sentiment, but like, seriously, what additional information does this provide to the content we already watched, or what question is being asked? It just feels like this person has a flawed mindset to be taking the time out of their day to complain in comment form on a video about improving yourself and your own personal improv skill when none of the complaints raised are related to the individual commenting. Just feels like someone going "waaah everything around me is so hard even if im doing it all well!" Nothing is being "added on."

Let the self-hatred leave your system. Okay but seriously, you have to see the irony in this right? Either writing these long-winded complaints is a huge waste of time and you're committing an even bigger sin, or maybe (just maybe) writing a youtube comment isn't that big of a commitment and you're overreacting a lil bit. Now if you'll excuse me, I actually have some lesson plans to write that take into account how much pre-justifying can slow the scene down for other people to explain why they shouldn't do that. ​@@mrmetang3642 I absolutely am just killing time writing comments and I fully agree with that. It's summer and I'm waiting for uni to start again. Life gets boring sometimes. No reason to get hostile. People who put so much focus on what others should be doing and push all responsibility off themselves in environments that should largely be about self improvement are one of my biggest pet peeves/annoyances. I understand constructive criticism and in-person performance review-that's the only way to truly improve-but when you go into spaces where nobody in those circles are going to hear your complaints that's when it gets a little frustrating for me. I could understand a little if its just venting to friends, but this space is barriered by watching a video then consciously decided to comment. You can't deny its a little bit more of a commitment. Also, maybe its just a difference in ideology thing, but I really don't think taking a "more positive outlook" on bitching and moaning is really very healthy or beneficial to anyone? Maybe we have a definition difference here but I always thought of that phrase as just complaining for complaining's sake.

If you wanted to limit it just to stuff also posted on KZread there's some full episodes of Make Some Noise, any of those would work well. And my absolute favorite being the episode Play It By Ear that was uploaded in full to the Dropout YT Channel. That one being done by Zack and Jess from Off Book: The Improvised Musical Podcast

Just found your channel and I'm really enjoying it, would love to see you react to more Smosh! I don't know anything about improv so it's fun to learn about why something works or doesn't. This isn't my favorite series because of many of the things you pointed out, such as the performers not being able to incorporate the comments into the scene well. They're so talented and funny but scenes often fall apart due to how specific the comments are, and it happens a lot in this particular episode. It seems impossible to naturally incorporate most of the lines they get into a scene. I think the producers choosing comments that lend more flexibility to the performers would go a long way for this series.

Yup! Got into Smosh in 2023. I'm 18 haha. I do think it's crazy, cause I really COULD have gotten into Smosh, I mean Good mythical morning was my childhood. But idk I like barely knew what it was. (No idea that GMM owned them for awhile) Even now, I don't watch main Smosh, the sketch content is not my thing. I found them from Reddit stories and now obsessed with pit, games, and Smosh mouth uploads. (With the exception of Let's do this and the funeral roasts) And ofc Angela Giarratana. I know her from starkid and when I found out she was in Smosh I FREAKED haha

But oh my lord, some of the shit people say to them in dms is simply too wild not to share wirh the rest of the class lol, they legitimately make the entire scene sometimes. Perfect example is definitely angela finding out she sounds way too much like Bobby Hill from King of the hill when she gets a Lil hyper/feral Guinea pig. Lol. What would life be, without angela now being Bobby hill from king of the hill, tho?

The problem is they have no idea what is going to be on that paper so they have to give as much leeway as possible hence the stuff others have said in the past

This is by far their weakest episode of this series. There have been episodes in the past where they didn't pigeonhole themselves nearly as much as they did in this episode.

omg this video really summerised how some poor improvisations look, it's kind of an octopus where theres a lot of things before and around the central plot, and the general theme itself is there just to connect the random quotes. on tv [in russia] there was a show that was just called improvisation, and they had their own little thing where people just talked and at random moments they'd ask the guest to give them 1 random word [the guest ofc can decide to make it smth spicific], it's not like the whole scene was just a way to connect these random words, more like. the guy would just say "yes, because we bought ..." and put the imagination job on the guest. so yeah, without those random words it'd be a normal conversation but they warp into smth funny.

I think a combo of pre-explaining and post-explaining is good and fine.

i never thought about it like that cause to me i think its funny when they pre assign the words to other people but i think thats cause of tv shows especially sitcoms because they always do that and then they usually cut away to the other characters saying that

I understand how from a purely improv perspective when they pre-justify the line incorrectly it messes it up. However, with this game specifically it feels almost like they do that to make fun of the audience or put the fault of the broken scene on us? I'm not sure how to properly phrase it, but I experience it like a banter. They're saying we're the professionals, we know where this scene is going and no you say your line and oof it was a dumb one AND you brought up a random person who's not even in this video! Because the SMOSH audience isn't someone at a venue who's unfamiliar with the performers it feels like in these videos it's more about trying make the audience a part of the joke/bit/moment then about technically correct improv from my perspective.
