Improvisation in a 19th C Orchestra according to Louis Spohr's Autobiography

In classical music it used to be much more normal to improvise. In this series we tell the stories of our colleagues from the past.
The interesting thing about this story is that Spohr gave us actual examples of what it sounded like when the horns and clarinetists all improvised together in orchestra. From his description it would seem like the other winds ornamented too and perhaps other instrumentalists as well?!?! Obviously Spohr didn't enjoy the result, but it does paint the picture of what it [at least at times] sounded like.

I’m using this excerpt often in talks about romantic performance practice and Rossini/Italian music, I should probably start using this video 😂😂😂
