Improving Loudspeaker Specifications Standards for Consumers

Ойын-сауық

Loudspeaker specifications are often ambiguous or incomplete in consumer audio making purchasing decisions more difficult for consumers than they should be. We are bringing together engineers and scientists from some of the leading industry brands to discuss better ways toward specing loudspeakers. We are proud to welcome Dr. Sean Olive of Harman, Scott Orth of Polk, Shane Rich of RBH Sound, Dan Roemer of Perlisten and Anthony Grimani.

No speaker manufacturer can publish specs based on room acoustics. Grimani attempted to develop benchmark specs. that can be published based on a benchmark using an anechoic chamber. The other guys don’t get it.

Used to be that speakers were rated 30 watt, 40 watt and I consider that to in be totally useless. Non 'philes would look at me dumbfounded when I'd be ask them "what's that mean". There are more useful specs nowadays, but reviewers are finding sensitivity ratings to not be quite kosher. More useful are spectral decay, bandwidth, power response in room, unwanted resonances, distortion measurements, horizontal and vertical dispersion data, photos of the x-overs to judge quality, where a lot of manufacturers use poor quality parts- 'cause you can't see 'em! If not direct from manufacturer, DIY is the way to go.

    • Disclose spec parameters. • Use anechoic (or similar) data and not estimated in-room performance. • Report max SPL. • Report bass extension, whether -6dB or -10dB (referenced to mean sensitivity). • Produce a Listening Window graph (smoothed no more than 1/12oct). • State minimum impedance between 100Hz-500Hz. • State dispersion characteristic. I calculate this currently by via the average of the Sound Power DI over a range and arbitrarily stating specific values as wide/normal/narrow/Omni. The above would be in the “brochure” that salesman can give to customers, I want a true spec sheet also available that goes into much more detail.

It's an interesting discussion. Max SPL alone is a complicated topic. For specifying directivity I think you need have a metric for the smoothness of the DI and also a metric for the overall width of dispersion in the mid-treble range.

@@ActuallySettle I don’t disagree, but the more detailed, the more confusing it is to your average consumer. Which is why I advocate for a very detailed spec sheet and a dumbed down brochure.

When discussing + or - 3 db on the freq response should also be measured at a specified smoothing. I would suggest 1/3, 1/6 and 1/12 octave smoothing.

8ohm, 6ohm, whatever, most enthusiasts have seen the graphs, and they're all over the place. It takes a bit of knowledge to understand, but having a competent reviewer usually will interpret the specs and suggest if it's easy/hard to drive. Gonna require an amp with more/less current capability. One may have to search out several reviews, if possible.

Perhaps part of the revolution should be an organization, profit or non profit, where a Mfr can take their product to and have a consistent set of tests run on each of their products. The Mfr could then take the results and include a link from the product page to the "industry accredited" testing agency's results page. The organization would be funded by fees collected for testing each product. One twist might be that there could be different levels of testing, you may not need the full gamut of tests on a $150 speaker but would want this on a $2,000 speaker.

The pushback was illogical doess a consumer know what 92 @ 1m 2v means? no! Can a consumer Google how loud an imax is yes then they can match that to their home

All the specs are wonderful but until you have the right preamp combined with the right amplifier and the right speakers all in the same room that can privide a good acoustic experience you will be trying this and buying that. What sounds good in the store may sound bad in the room you put them in. The other problem is the recording industry whether it be live or in a studio , they are not all the same. At some point you have to be happy with what you have but getting there isn't always in the budget.

One thing I would like to have seen covered is speaker topology and the effect on SPL at different distances from the speaker. Is there a difference between between a point source vs a line source vs a panel speaker. I think a spec should define the SPL at 1 meter, 2 meters, 4 meters, 6 meters.

I love audioholics though and Gene you are the best!
