Hello Gill, Happy New Year 2024! Thank you for this lesson. Ness is owrhaps one of the most used suffix I know. Until this lesson was heard, I didn't pay attention to this suffix. Now it is interesting to know how often we use it. Happiness, sadness, goodness - I could go on. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but i have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep. Indeed, drousyness, sleepyness, wakefulness, alertness, attentiveness are key to good health and happiness. Joy be with you, dear Gill. We bathe in the brightness of the Gilli - ness in our virtual worldliness. 😊

Great lesson on suffixes. When I need some education as well as a mood booster, I always watch your videos!❤ p.s I've alwayed had a problem with the word laziness. My parents always said I was lazy, when I was actually depressed! I'm sure there are lazy people too, but I often find that depression gets misstaken for laziness!

Dear Ma'am Gill, This lesson on vocabulary of adding 'ness' to certain letters seem quite interesting ! Here,i think, the word 'likeness' can be equated with the word ' resemblance' to show that something is almost the same with a little difference. Thanks to you with all my best wishes on this New Year 2024 !

I am not a native English speaker. But I’m not afraid to make and use words with affixes as long as they sound like English. Haha. I don’t care if it is in the dictionary or not (incidentally almost all would happen to be in the dictionary anyway). :)

  • @nattybking

I assume it is dependent on the pronunciation of the 'y'. In the case of 'shy', the y is pronounced 'i' (eye) whereas happy is a long 'ee' sound. I love the English language, it is a riddle!
