Easy English: How to pronounce the long vowel sound in words ending with ‘e’

Have you noticed there’s a difference between the pronunciation of NOT and NOTE, or SIT and SITE? In this lesson I’ll introduce you to this interesting rule, where adding an E at the end of a word changes the previous vowel from short to long. If this sounds strange, don’t worry, I have lots of example words to illustrate it - so don’t QUIT before you’ve started, it’s actually QUITE easy! You’ll also get to learn some new vocabulary along the way. www.engvid.com/basic-english-...

I have been taught in school, that in a closed syllable (ending with a consonant) pronunciation must be short. Like in gap, hop, rip, tap etc. And in an open syllable (ending with a vowel) it must be pronounced like in the alphabet (like in gape, hope, ripe, tape etc.) I know there is a handful of exceptions, especially in composita, but in general it works well as an orientation. Thank you very much for all your lessons, absolutely great. Especially for the painstaking semantic descriptions of all lexical means, vocabulary etc.
