Improve Your Spinning Rod Game| Use Straight Fluorocarbon

Sorry I was actually holding a box of mono in the video but it really is kind of irrelevant. If you want to improve your spinning rod game I would suggest exploring everything you can about line management. There are times when spooling fluorocarbon is better than a braid to fluorocarbon set up.

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzread.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

*Nice reel so far **enjoyable.fishing** recommend used it for about an hour after getting it from Amazon and functioned flawlessly. Very smooth retrieve and the anti reverse is perfect. Feels like a reel that would be double the price.*

I tend to use fluoro and copoly on most of my setups, except my punching and frogging gear. It’s a feel thing for me. I tried braid to leader for well over a year and I could never get used to the feel of it and I feel like I lost a few fish because of it. I just couldn’t keep them pinned for some reason. On top of that, I primarily fish with a small boat in skinny waters where I make much shorter casts so I don’t really need the added casting distance of braid. Plus, like you, I was spending more time working on connection knots which was a headache. I will say that the sensitivity of braid is amazing though and the hooksets were super crisp and took zero effort so I understand why people seem to dig it. I guess the moral of the story is find what works for you and stick with it. Tight lines folks!

Hey Brian! Congrats on the win! Been watching your KZread channel. This Flourocarbon line confuses me alot. Other fishermen say they have to much trouble with this kind of line. I don't do leaders on my reel's. Never had trouble with line slipping on my reel's. Mono or braid. I am not a Tournament fisherman.I am 59 years old. I have totally revamped my whole fishing methods. Rod's, reel's, line, technics. I don't even have a boat. My Father had one for years. I fished with him and learned alot. But now its a whole new Ball game! There are alot of talking heads about Bass fishing. Some have no business giving info out. I find your videos refreshing. I watch all the way threw everytime. Don't want to miss a moment of the VIDEO. So keep up the good work. Good luck in tne future in Tournament Bass fishing. Shawn

First off Congrats on the new addition to your family Brian! Second I fish out of a kayak a lot so I like to go with straight fluoro because I don’t like to re tie leaders while I’m on the water. Tying a leader is easy but like you said it cuts into my fishing time. So even though I would prefer to use braid to leader at times at the end of the day I’d rather maximize the time I have my bait in the water instead of spending my time tying knots

I start watching you over the summer and I noticed the leaders that you would tie I start watching you tie the leader and I really didn't understand what you were doing but now I I do I do that on one of my casting rods braids fluorocarbon.. I put about 35 to 45 in. of fluorocarbon I get fluo because the knot that I use I'm pretty new to it. It makes me think is't going to come apart when I catch a big bass. I started out using fluorocarbon before I was first introduced to braid so thanks for the heads up. I just purchased a St. Croix 7 + 1 medium heavy extra fast. It's called the bass X I like the feel of it I put a Shimano 150 XG on top of it. I'm going to change it up and get the Sumano 7. 5 and it just feel so light like a feather I think i'm just use floral on that thank you again for the information looking forward to seeing you destroy the bass in the Bass Classic and you keep up the good work you're a very talented guy I like your style of fishing .

Feel the same way with mono. I throw light jigs with gulp minnows on a medium or medium light spinning rod with 8 lb green trilene xl line, seems to just work. Mostly use this for multispecies but bass love it also. Can catch perch, walleye, largemouth, small mouth, crappie, catfish all in the same day on that rig. The slight stretch in the mono helps that setup do its thing.

Excellent video! Finally someone who understands different setups for different situations and different people! NOT contradicting, but I’d like to make a few suggestions for the open minded. There are actually situations where braid is HARDER to see than fluorocarbon. Dirty water on sunny days, flouro stands out where braid blends (darker braid, not hi-vid neon colors). I would also suggest that a copolymer line can be better than flouro as well. It casts better, has better abrasion resistance, and is often thinner for the same actual break strength. When you mentioned heavier line not working for spinning rigs, at first I was not agreeing, but then I remembered you were talking about flouro not mono. We used 20+ lb line on spinning gear a lot, and while it clearly didn’t cast as well as 10lb, it wasn’t a problem. But that’s because mono has less memory than flouro. For me, the only benefit to flouro, is if you want that line sinking. Mono, is nearly as hard for the fish to see, casts better, costs a lot less, and is thinner. Thin mono is as hard to see as thicker flouro. Just for a test, try using maybe a Berkley Sensation leader on instead of flouro sometime. Or fill a spool with it.

I use straight flourocarbon when fishing on the pier. When there are a decent amount of people and lines get crossed, trying to de-tangle braid from any other line is a mess. Plus because I'm using a heaver rig altogether, the cast distance and accuracy is not an issue.

I have to agree. A lot of people talk about line stretch negatively, but to me it can actually be a positive. I personally fish with a lot of very small panfish style lures since I like to be able to catch a variety of fish, and as a result I usually end up using small gauge hooks. The thing about small hooks is that it's really easy for bigger fish to spit the hooks or have them rip out of their mouth entirely. Since I tend to use 6 lb mono and a light moderate action rod, it can absorb a lot of shock and keep an even, firm pressure on the hook. If I catch a 4 lb bass on a 1/32 ounce beetle spin, I'd honestly much rather have 6 lb mono than 50 lb braid for that reason

  • @SlickCat

So I have a lite and a lite medium spinning rod with braid/floro and a medium heavy spinning with straight floro. I have two casting reels with braid/floro on them, but they are backups. I’m pretty much braid to leader also...on EVEEYTHING. But I’ve got this daiwa rod and reel and the rod has micro guides. I’m totally happy with my blood knot and won’t ever change (I mean I take that knot into my spool on my baitcasters sometimes with zero issues). But that knot sometimes gets hung up in the tip guide/eyelet. So...I’m gonna try straight floro. Was thinking 8lb but after watching this maybe I’ll go 6? I’m totally not a spinning guy....but i do have a few of them. Good informative vid. Thanks!!!

I just got all my spinning rods out a hour ago . Pulled out a bunch of line and thought about what I was gping to spool everything up with . ended up pairing up reels with the rods and setting them back . Came back and just seen this vid . Now I have watched it the question I have is what if you go to a long leader like 20 foot . At that rate probabky just easier to skip the knot and go straight floro

I keep a spinning rod with 8 lb fluoro for finesse swim baits and very light crank baits in the winter months.

You on the money with these tips 10lb braid to 20lb mono aswell for blues and Spanish of piers need the long cast and they will bite straight through that braid

I'm primarily a saltwater flats fisherman in Florida. Here's my two cents. When you run braid you can fill the spool slap up, and you still will won't get wind knots. If you're gonna run Fluro or Mono don't fill you spinning reel full up, it will drive you crazy with wind knots. You'll lose some distance, but you'll also lose the frustration of knotted up line.

Part of why people don't like doing this is is that fluorocarbon that handles well is expensive. I want to try Sunline Shooter eventually as well, but I have Seaguar Tatsu on two reels and it handles like Berkley XL mono. Both of these lines are 40 bucks for 200 yards, though. Cheap fluoro is like wire. I swear that Tatsu is more sensitive than any braids I've used. I only really like braid if I just need really heavy line, a whole lot of line, or if I'm fishing topwater.

walleye fisherman here. my drop shot rods and my slip float rods are going to straight fluoro this year, and one rip jigging rod as well. the bread and butter for rip jigging is braid to fluoro with one mono to fluoro rod but i want to see if i can get the same effect the mono has on the bait with fluoro.

Cajun Gator green is the braid of monofilament. This stuff has almost zero stretch (sensitivity), high abrasion resistance, and casts like a dream. I don't use anything else.

Love the vid B. One question i dont think i heard in this vid....Was wondering what u use fishing drop shots in 5-20FT of water and 25-50ft? I would think straight floro in less than 20ft and braid to leader in 25+ ft? What are ur thoughts? I love being able to pick the brain of a pro fisherman 🙂
