How to Choose Line Size

In this video I talk about how I choose line according to the application. While I use a wide assortment of line sizes feel certain that you can accomplish most fishing tactics with just a few line sizes if you choose them correctly.

Your doing the best service of almost all pros out there in educational and diversity of providing options in an honest fashion. You say "mono" the scary 4 letter word... lol. It let's anglers know it's ok to go with the less expensive to be able to get out more and fish than spend tons of money. Keep educating and keeping them outdoors more!!!

I fished my entire life with mono, but I decided to try braid-leader this year for all 3 rods. There are a lot of examples of which lb test to use in various techniques. I kept my decision simple by choosing braid with the same diameter as the mono it replaced.

B.Lat, Great topic the first line that you covered was 15lb Fluoro, I fish from a #Kayak so if I get hooked up to a large fish 5lbs or over I let the fish fight the Yak so stress on the line is minimal. I do with all my rod set-ups what you do with your spinning set-ups always braid to Fluoro, 20lb braid to whatever test Fluoro the applications calls for and most applications it's to 15lb Fluoro. The times when I switch it up is for my DD Crankbaits straight Fluoro 12lb and for ultra light then I will use straight 4 or 6 lb Fluoro.

What do you think about very lite braided line, like 8 lb power pro - says it’s Monofilament braided line. I love to worm fish, Texas rig and whacky rig? I like to cast a long way, 150ft plus if I can. To me that’s the ultimate ego booster. But with braid, a birds nest is hard to pick out, and it tangles more often. That’s the downside. I always take a reel with mono on it in case the wind picks up.

Here is the what I'm looking to achieve. My two flipping/frog rods have a line size rating on 35 lb test at the most. Now I never really have gone by those ratings like I should but I am now that I'm paying good money for rods I don't want break them over silly mistake like line size. What are your thoughts on that?

going lower test than 20 with braid for spinning reels, I end up a lot of birds nest. I find the higher the test the fewer birds nest and tip wrap I get. also when it finally wears down its has the same flow as lower pound test.

@@kingvadervlog8280 depends, I’m not much of a freshwater fisher but I personally wouldn’t use a lighter leader than that of the line I am using. For a multitude of reasons but mostly to be confident in flipping fish into the boat. But in the video he talks about versatility, a 15 lb test braided line could use a leader anywhere from 6lb test all the way up to 20lb.

How critical are the references listed on the reels for pound test. Is it just for yardage the reel will hold for example ? ie ....... let's say the real list of max line poundage is 15lbs . Is 25 lb test ok ? I know the total amount decreases by increasing line thickness . But is that the only downside ? Thx .

Hey Brian: Thanks for your advice. This topic is fun and complex. So many ways to go. As for me, I've been very pleased with Spiderwire Invisi-Braid 15lb on my spinning reels. Lately, I've been pre-making some varied short fluoro leaders with and without weights. www.dropbox.com/s/yynqmqsu5qzuaj0/IMG_1522.jpg?dl=0 (the keychain split-rings are just for organizing). 20lb fluoro really stands up to pike teeth and walleye teeth where the braid alone won't. I believe the small swivels and snaps do NOT deter the bass, while they do eliminate any chance of line twist.

Or... ignore all the nonsense and just put on 40 or 50 test braid and use it for everything. I have 50 on my spinning tackle. Heavier line prevents some of the wind knots and other issues as well. Never worry about any crap I may get in to. When something does occur like a missed hook set or whatever, the thicker line is easier to unravel/untangle as well.

Not really about what anyone likes, more about what will work just fine. No need for 50 different setups for specific types of situations. Grab some braid, spool it up... go fishing. To think specific line for some specific situation is going to somehow magically make the fish bite, is just nonsense.

I mean Brian is right tbh you look on the deck of any pro they have different rods for those specific situations and the ones that don't have those rods aren't really successful that much I mean braid is good line but not straight braid for every situation plus in the winter if it's cold enough if will start to freeze
