In this video, we'll be learning how to mix colors and create smooth, yet realistic transitions using oil paints while avoiding the most common mistakes, like overmixing. Palette and pigments
Here are the pigments I’ll use for this demonstration, I’m pretty much using my go to palette with titanium white, yellow ochre, transparent red oxyde, pyrrole red, quinacridone rose, burnt umber, ultramarine blue, cobalt teal blue and phthalo green yellow shade. I’m using a glass palette with a neutral grey background to see all the nuances in tones and hues. This grey background is the first tip you can take from this tutorial: it can make a pretty big difference compared to other colors, it’s neutral, it doesn’t influence the color perception in any direction, it makes the colors look exactly as light or dark as they are, which is not the case with a white background for instance, which makes everything look dark in comparison. And it’s neutral so it’s neither warm nor cool, it’s just in the middle which allows you to perceive all the important difference in shades between the colors.

I am an artist living and working in France. There is a method, when the shadow is painted with the transparent pigments and very thin and with no details, and the rest of lighter parts are being built up on the painting, the light being the heaviest in paint load. I find it quite awesome, it adds life and dynamic.

@@Norman_Peterson i understand where you’re coming from. but what if we didn’t know who the great masters were? What if we didn’t know Michelangelo or picasso and so on? no, numbers aren’t everything. but if you’re great at something but you don’t get receptivity or feedback it’s easy to fall into feelings of lack of motivation (i speak for myself) and from my understanding the more views he gets, a little more $$ mullah comes their way, and …we depend on that to get better products, better lighting, paint etc. (again, not that you _need_ those to be a good artist) i think you mean context* too and i don’t mean that to be a condescending correction, heck, florent is french so his subscribers are likely to be too but that’s also a huge assumption on my part or a typo 🤷🏼♀️ though contents technically works #tedtalk sorry lol blah!

@@Alexcutspie not knowing who the masters are not enough reason to lose motivation. Searching at google is more convenient nowadays if u ever need to have your inquiries answered. I’m a self taught artist and I learned valuable info from this video tutorial. Learning doesn’t end here or inside the classroom. We’re learning every single day regardless of art your passion or not. The sky is the limit to educate and enhance your skills. Practice make room for improvement. However, if u get to a point of losing ur mind and having Art block then, rest ur mind and do something else. When u get back to ur drawing and painting it will be a blast. Best wishes to u.

It's very informative even that I use digital R but I still use gush and the critics in onenote and I do have like my own pallet on the top just because I wanted to learn right and I feel like if there's a way I can learn with plenty of mistakes that I can fix if I do get acknowledged and in one transition to traditional all that knowledge of me learning how to not make mistakes could transition great to traditional and it could come out awesome

Something that particularily ticked me off is when he stated in a previous video that its not possible for a self taught artist to reach the "level" of someone who has attended an atelier. Already, you can go wrong with that advice, to disprove your point utterly.

All these youtube videos are illusions, they are purely advertisments made to promote the uploader and to make money, and in the meant time the uploader has to abide by youtubes standards and kiss its ass.
It's going to be a long way away before I dare to try oils but I still watch your videos 🙏🌊🔱🌪🌪🌪

Just try it. I felt intimidated by oils for so long, but there is no need. Buy some canvas paper and a limited set of artist grade oil paints (a bigger tube of white, and smaller tubes of lemon yellow, cadmium red, magenta, ultramarine blue, black). Get a few flat and round brushes (I like to buy from Rosemary & Co); a paint brush washer and Gamsol. Relatively low investment - hours of learning and discovery from here!

My biggest mistake is ……well like everything at first! Too pink mainly. Also loading paint all on the whole brush in to the metal bristle and down to wood all messy

Yep, as @Vera Coberley said, just try it! It takes a bit of setting up but once you got the practical stuff, painting with it is pretty easy, easier than most people think.
I do the same thing with fruits also I love working on parts more...

I am having so much trouble with drawing and painting portraits. Can you do a step by step vedio on this? I really want to start painting Fantasy portraits and realistic portraits from life or a photo.
Are there any color-systems that you recommend for a beginner? A limited palette of a complementary pair with black and white is one I’ve heard of.

Limited palette is a good idea, it depends on the type of subject you want to paint. Or just grisaille (ivory black, raw umber and white) if you're still figuring out how to handle and control paint, it's great in the beginning. Then start adding colors here and there to this palette to fill the gaps and you'll see that you create your own limited palette based on your needs.

With your "painting method" it doesn't matter what undertone the canvas has. Green, red, ocher etc. Cheers...

You are never too old to start painting. I am 66yo and I started in 2018. I have just finished painting 54 oil paintings in 2022. These are 40INCH by 40INCH mural.
