Improve Your Graphite Drawings Right Now | Scale of Values

My drawing classes on Skillshare with a special offer: www.skillshare.com/r/user/mlm...
I’ve been trying to make realistic drawings for years, but when I was a beginner my drawings looked flat, without depth, and I wasn’t even aware of that. So I had this limitation simply because I didn’t know what a scale or range of values was. It wasn’t until I started to use charcoal and carbon pencils did I managed to broaden the range of values of my drawings, which makes them look more vivid and realistic. In this video I’ll mention a couple of drawing tools that can help you do the same and I will suggest one specific pencil more friendly to artists that are more used to draw with graphite.

You confirmed the thing I came to the internet to confirm: "graphite doesn't get that dark" I am a watercolor artist and always felt like my pencil drawings could never achieve super dark

I use the exact same carbon pencils as in this video. I tried black coloured pencil with graphite before, but sometimes after 24 hours, the coloured pencil creates a white/clear layer of wax on some parts. That's why I switched to Mars Lumograph Black carbon pencils.

Good to know, Charles! I guess it also depends on which colored pencil you are using, but yeah, having a layer of wax is definitely one of its downsides...

Am an artist as well.both works are very good comparing them all two are great for different reason, the one in graphite is still correct value an gives more harmony, the other drawing has more contrast which is well done as well.i would say depending on the mode your going for is what truly matters in this case .i have come to realize that harmony is great an contrast is great as well

I didn't like the Lumograph black pencils found them hard to use and didn't look right with the standard pencils. Something was off putting about the gloss levels. I tried the matt ones and found them much better.

Interesting! I'm looking forward to trying these. The use of art materials is a very personal matter, so it's no surprise some artists will not like the Black series. Thanks for your comment :)
