In this video, I show you my routine that I use to improve my ghost note control with my left hand. I find that some days I'm way better than others, but it's really helped me to develop more control and independence.
The hardest part is making sure the ghost notes on each side of the accent are the same volume as all the other ghost notes. Also, it's challenging to keep the right hand grooving on the hi-hat.
Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

Hello Jared! I've been a long time viewer of your helpful videos. I just wanted to thank you for this wonderful and extremely helpful lesson! I haven't played drums for more than a year. I practiced this for around 30 mins and have seen its immediate effects when I again played the song I am learning. I will definitely be practicing this everyday. Thanks again and more drumming prowess to you! 😊

I just got a smokin' deal on a Pearl Masters Custom maple kit. I'm a bass player learning drums over last 6 years. I've traded up through 8 kits to get the Masters kit. Jared, you've inspired me to go back and learn drums from the ground up. I could throw down beats I learned along the way, now, I want to play drums and not just as a pleasant hobby. I want to be good enough to gig! Looking forward to more Drumeo!

When I first tried it I had troubles with the groove on the hi-hat but I got the hang with ghost notes with the accent on the Snare I had no trouble whatsoever but I think its because I'm a lefty that I didn't had too much trouble, it took me a few tries to get the hang of the whole groove but now I can do it faster now (thanks drumeo for the tips and beats you give me, I couldn't have gotten this far without your videos lol)

I have a Gretsch Energy, 8, 10, 14, 16, 22...to be an entry level drum set it has a great sound and it's very solid. I use Evans Black chrome and as the drum set is black too it looks just awesome. I'm 31 and I play since I was 15, believe it or not, this is my first drum set, I always played in rented rehearsal rooms so as you can imagine I love my gretsch and I take care of it as it was the most expensive DW :)

I teach and play professionally and I was checking out Sweetwater demo videos w/ Nick D. The Gretsch Energy kit sounds better than DWs in my opinion. I was surprised at how good the Gretsch Energy series sounds. Don't fall for the DW hype. Just because a drum set is $7,000 doesn't mean it has to sound better than a cheaper kit.

I have almost the same setup. The sound really surprised me for the price. The hardware that came with it leaves a bit to be desired, but you can't beat the value. ETA: It looks like Gretsch updated the hardware since I purchased mine, going with a more robust mounting system for the toms instead of the god awful ball joint ones mine came with.

danneu8 There's a store here in Chile called Drum Dealer, the kit they sold me comes with the hardware of the 2013 catalina series so it's better that the regular Energy, in fact I haven't seen another energy with the same sizes and hardware, this makes me love my kit even more. If you want to hear how it sounds check out my channel, I'm recording a new album with it...cheers

"Ghost notes, however, are not simply the unaccented notes in a pattern. The unaccented notes in such a pattern as a clave are considered to represent the mean level of emphasis-they are neither absolutely emphasized nor unemphasized. If one further deemphasizes one of these unaccented notes to the same or a similar extent to which the accented notes in the pattern are emphasized, then one has 'ghosted' that note." -Wiki

Nice playing! Nice micro dynamics. However, they are not ghost notes. They're called ghost notes because they aren't played, they're implied. They occur between strokes. The human mind is wired to seek patterns and will often fill in the blanks even if something is not actually there. Ghost notes are an audio phenomena. They happen between played strokes. Bonham is a good example.
