Impromptu #6 If you've got nothing to say ...

In One Castle Street, Bakewell, opposite the house where John grew up from the age of 12, John hosts the first 'after breakfast chat' with the retreat group on 30 April 2019 covering a wide range of issues raised by the guests:
- the discipline of not talking
- if you have nothing to say, say nothing
- how to overcome depression
- how do we clear the mind?
- raising consciousness above the mind
- 'working' at meditation v. coming to rest
- letting go of results
- meditation in daily life
- remembrance as a grace
- establishing good habits to aid meditation
- the 3 ways - knowledge, action, devotion
- follow your heart
The group ends with a spontaneous rendition of "How great Thou art."
Gracious thanks to our retreat guests - Marion, Patrick, Dimitris, Andrew, Martin and Glenn for allowing us to share these insights from your questions with a wider audience.
Did you know you can now listen to John on Spotify and other audio platforms? Here is his most popular recording 'Common sense guide to meditation' (1m views) - ffm.to/commonsenseguidetomedi....

@@adamrobo1417 I apologise for the lack of comprehension skills you were never gifted. First of all, there is no need for her to cry since John Butler fixed her mood so she is no longer sad - she is happy so no crying. Second of all, even if she was sad, which she is NOT, such comment is not helpful and only shows how deeply insecure you are to need to crap on others and make them feel bad to make yourself feel better. It obviously mirrors that you are the one who needs to stop crying. Feet on the ground, listening and looking will calm you down.

This is the best video John has put out yet imo. It speaks to so much of my life. I have found in my experience that most of life just unfolds as it wills regardless of my best efforts and that to "trust the Presence of God" is all I can do. I read brother Lawrences book 12 years ago and found it to be the most tried and true. So true about saying nothing when having nothing to say... something I regret about my younger days, but something I had to learn.

Thank you for this post of John Butler. Listening to him inspires me to be quieter in the company of others. I have lived believing that I need to leave myself to connect with others and that has led to my spending much time on my own . I realise that belief and way of connecting brings such loneliness. As I watch this video, I am moved by John’s sharing how quiet allows Spirit be present and that communication does not require words… unlike John it’s not that I don’t know what to say to others but I quickly jump into words that are mechanical and robotic as John describes. May I break that habit and John’s sharing helps me with that.. le grá

His videos are so informative and interesting....When I saw a video that just popped up I thought it was a clip from a movie and he was someone who played some wise old man, then I did a Google search and found out he is a real person...LOL he seems like a very wise man...And I have now watched several more of his videos, I feel like I have gained a lot of wisdom.....I am pretty much 100% of the people who watch his videos gain several IQ points with every video watched 😊 Hopefully all his videos remain accessible forever and that he continues to make more videos and posts them, I feel like my intelligence level doubled....including possibly tripled my IQ 😁 Hopefully John is around 100 years from now....He is very good at passing out words of life changing wisdom....Another guy who is also seems very wise and did several lectures with information and wisdom was a man named James Randi, someone who is similar in appearance with the beard and all. LOL unfortunately though James Randi passed away in October of last year, but he was interesting and informative too, although in different ways....

I used to do a lot of business networking, going into a room full of strangers and chatting with them about business. As time went on, I realised something, I didn't NEED to go up to people and talk to them, if I just hung back a bit someone would soon get round to coming up to me. Not that I am an introvert, I had no problem initiating a conversation, but it was interesting how much better things went when I let the other person speak first.
