Impromptu #2 - The Jesus Prayer

In this impromptu chat, the second at Cliff College, John addresses:
- differences between Eastern and Western Christianity
- origins of 'The Jesus Prayer'
- on Russia - "These people are my people"
- in the real world there is no death
- when present we are 'in love' and free from fear
- why love affairs go wrong
- in the real world there is only one time - eternity
- pure and impure, divine and demonic
- meditation is the practice of letting go attachment to our separate identity
- we can never not be in Jesus
- be determined for freedom
- how to deal with thoughts
- whatever you attend to expands and seems more real
- practical exercise in the use of 'The Jesus Prayer'
Gracious thanks to our retreat guests - Berthram, Carlyn, Krish, Cate, Arthur, Jasmine, Tracey, Angie for allowing us to share these insights.

When I lost my son, somehow I was lead here! So comforting when he says nothing dies! I wish My son would have found peace on this earth in the comfort of knowing he was needed here, and had a comfortable place. I did hear my son say” I am okay now mom.”

@Shaq_K47 the teachings of Jesus are the same of those of the Vedas, of the Buddha, of the many great sages throughout the ages they point to the same thing,.. you have to see what sin really is what it is that veils you from the truth of who you really are. Less of a frivolity, I would say it is a mark of (1) the cultural quality of his mother’s love - she was a Russian expat - which would form a foundational conditioning of his experience of all love, and (2) the spiritual experiences he had while traveling and living in Russia himself, his growing and deepening sense of Christ through the Eastern (orthodox) Christian tradition. It’s not much different from others who wax poetic about India because they gained so much from Hinduism. It is a human emotional connection to a concept, a set of experiences.

There’s a brilliant book regarding the Jesus Prayer called The Way of the Pilgrim. It’s a Russian book, focused on the travels of a Christian hermit who wants to achieve St Paul’s instruction to “pray endlessly”. I always found it a sort of Christian version of Hesse’s Siddhartha and both are truly beautiful books.

Lock the mind inside the words and dispel everything, like this elder says. No visions, no other thoughts. However good they might seem. That’s the beginning. Humility is needed. Good luck!

I meditated for 10 years before I stumbled across this video, and John Butler. Somehow I had managed to completely overlooked the infinite loving presence that’s always available. John has helped my meditation orient to spirit and love in a much richer and fuller way. The teachings of Jesus resonate for the first time in my life too. As a lifelong atheist that was a surprise! You’ve been a wonderful influence and teacher to me. Thank you John.

I wonder sometimes as a bass player of 19 years experience.. maybe playing music is a form of finding the present. I mean when I'm doing it I'm thinking of nothing else and I'm in the time of just grooving so to speak. It's the closest I have to relating to the meditation without knowing what it is really. I'm 34.. sometimes I have used the feet on the ground and feel your bodys presence on the earth and try find inner peace when there is some chaos in my mind. It does help. If I could see John in person I'd love to give him a great hug and have a small chat with him. What a legend
