Impromptu #16 Can we think our way to Unity?

The principle behind all meditation practice is to transcend thinking. You can't think your way to Oneness.
On a retreat at One Castle Street (opposite where John lived as a boy from age 12) he is joined by Jane, Alex, Lodewijk, Laura, Petrisor and Andrew.
Those wanting more detailed accounts of John's life experience - the formative influences, which have taught and made him what he is, will find it in his 8 published books, available through the website: www.spiritualunfoldment.co.uk/store.
Did you know you can now listen to John on Spotify and other audio platforms? Here is his most popular recording 'Common sense guide to meditation' (1m views) - ffm.to/commonsenseguidetomedi....

    orthodox metropolitan Kallistos Ware tells a story of school kids meeting a man in a monastery (if I remember right) who sat in church, in silence for hours. And when they got the gumption to ask what he's doing, he said praying. They said 'you must be asking for a lot' and he said he doesn't ask for anything, he said "I just sit and look at god, and he sits and looks at me."

    Isn't it a relief that we can't think our way to unity?! My mind gets tired.🙂. As I practice surrendering/letting go, I experience peace that isn't present when thinking and grasping for it.

    What are your thoughts on using “to make whole, be whole” as a mantra during meditation. I’m still finding some reluctance in my mind when trying to use the Jesus Prayer but I do understand that it can be better to use something that is time tested. To make whole, be whole resonated with me when I first heard John say it. Thanks so much for these videos John and Phil. They are truly life savers.

  • @Seemsayin

    @Seemsayin

    Жыл бұрын

    Why would you wonder about that? Are you agraphobic? Facing your fears is the ONLY way to overcome them. Listening to someone talk about meditation would be side-stepping the problem. Anyone with a problem with crowds and open spaces might consider taking baby steps into that fear. Learn to crawl, then walk, then run. That's how it works. It's a time-tested strategy. If that doesn't work, then your fobia becomes reality.

That may seem like an odd question but I'm wondering if life is truly a "gift" or if it is something we need to throw away our lives in to the fire of trying to fix the world? I know you have answered this with "to make whole be whole" but I would love if you could shed some more light on that phrase. Thank you for all of your talks!

    I recently thought of this question: what separates us from rocks and trees? We are all made of atoms, elements, and matter. So why do we live and have consciousness and intelligence, but things like rocks or buildings don't? My answer: we have a soul. It is beyond infinite, beyond the rules and understanding of our reality. It is the soul that powers us. When we die, our soul leaves our body, and is lifted to God. That's why our body is just flesh after we die, there is no more soul to power it.

    Can someone please let the good man know that it is next to impossible to understand him if he is laughing and talking at the same time ? And with the extraordinary dynamics of his voice, those parts then are also the loudest and need repeating. So one has to attend directly to the PC to get over those parts and then find the right volume levels again before one goes back to the kitchen where one wants to understand what he then practically whispers.

  • @TheSoteriologist

    @TheSoteriologist

    2 жыл бұрын

    @kittieconvoy Hey, the antifa-types are back ! _" maybe attend to these videos when you're not busy doing other things?"_ In that case I obviosly have a gazillion of priorites on the PC that require visual interaction. Videos that do not require looking on are obviously restricted to times when I do not directly attend to the PC. So you think I need counselling from that your kind of an IQ level, right ? And for profound "assisted contemplation" I would not use the very, very introductory level of JB. I am still curious about some of the new aspects he sometimes throws in, but with his repetitive overproduction Phil forces me into choosing between wasting an inordinate amount of time or unsubscribing and hence missing _all_ of what JB has to say. Funny how I don't _"seem to experience"_ any of those supposed _"high levels of irritation"_ with any audios with proper sound management.

  • @TheSoteriologist

    @TheSoteriologist

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@cozicoops I am hearing anyone else speaking but JB in my videos quite well, thank you, including Phil. How do you explain that then, you expert ? _"I’ve never had that problem?"_ Only a schizophrenic would have to ask _if he himself_ has a problem, and only a sociopath would need to resort to your _(necessarily hate-motivated)_ ad hominem attempts in hopes of avoiding the matter at hand. As regards JB, it is obvious to anyone who is trying to listen him while performing chores around the apartment while not wanting to molest the neighbors with noise. You can _objectively_ measure the enormeous dynamics of his voice which suddenly turns unbearably loud when he laughs if you do not regulate the volume down after cranking it up enough to understand his otherwise mumbling into his beard while investing 90% of his effort into the timbre of his voice and a minimal amount into articulation with its absurd british oscillation between contrabass and soprano. If there is any irritation here about JB, it is 2 things: Phil's overproduction of repetitious messages by JB _(one such video per month would be quite sufficient)_ and secondly the fact that to finish 10 minutes of listening to JB usually takes 20 minutes. That is particularly unnerving because 1 hour of JB usually contains a maximum of 2 or 3 minutes of something he hasn't said before. In pressing times like these, it would be nice of Phil if he isoltated those and posted only them.
