Immune to Cancer | Michael Jensen | TEDxStMarksSchool

What if the future of cancer treatment lies not with stronger drugs and larger doses of radiation that kill cells indiscriminately, but instead harnesses the power of our immune system to destroy cancer cells in our own body? Dr. Michael Jensen shares details of an FDA approved cancer treatment with a 91% cure-rate.
Dr. Michael Jensen is a leader in the field of cancer immunotherapy research. As the founding director of the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research at Seattle Children's Research Institute, Dr. Jensen and his team are pioneering translational research with striking results that just might change the way we think of disease treatment.

    01/2012 - I had melanoma in the brain, both lungs, liver, kidney, gall bladder, left adrenal gland and spinal cord. My treatments were two craniotomy and three Gamma Knife radiations. I was accepted into the very first clinical trial with ipilimumab and nivolumab. After eights months, I was declared cancer free. Almost ten years now, cancer free. Immunotherapy is definitely the way to treat cancer.

    I'm a brain cancer patient, and I brought this up to my neurosurgeon the last time that I saw him, and he said that he'll talk with my radiologist, and my Chemotherapist about this treatment. Car-T is the term that I'm aware of for this treatment. I already had surgery for my initial cancer, then radiation for a recurrence. I'm taking this on for the 3rd time now. I have my fingers crossed that I end up okay this time too. The physical symptoms aren't fun, but the emotional roller coaster that cancer includes is no fun either.

    @@lisaschuster686 I took Keytruda with Linvema (?spelling) for a little more than two months. It damaged my liver and gallbladder (it can cause actual tears in the gallbladder) and I was in so much pain that I couldn't even lay in bed. I spent two months doing nothing but sitting and sleeping in our recliner. At that point, I told the clinic to take their immunotherapy and shove it. (It had almost no effect on the cancer.) It took over a year for the abdominal pain to leave, and any time I have to take large quantities of medication, it returns. The Linvema caused high blood pressure, and one of them (not sure which) caused high blood sugar, so I gained weight and my A1C went up. I never read the full list of potential side effects because my overactive brain tends to manifest them, but after I quit taking them, I heard the list on a commercial and was horrified.

  • @theTdawgYo

    @theTdawgYo

    I won't go in to deep on this but the main reason is cost and lack of clinical data. New drugs must be approved and tested rigorously which is expensive and difficult, for it can hurt innocent people along the way if done wrong. The average cost of getting a cancer drug on the market is over 3 billion dollars. Most of what you see of cancer-treatment "news" on social media are simply positive pre-clinical results that are blown out of proportion in order to stir up funding money.

  • @Firedance

    @Firedance

    7 жыл бұрын

    But conventional treatment is hurting innocent people more.!? I say the cost of bringing it on the market could be financed by dropping the expenses on the old drugs and procedures that cause more harm... just switch. The "cost" is being interpreted in terms of the profit that companies loose on their current drugs. They've invested on developing and setting up a production. It doesn't take the cost of peoples lives into consideration. Company profit and investment is 1st priority, not lives. I'd say, let the patients decide which treatment they will get. Not the doctor. The doctor can advise, but the patients should have the final say. It's their lives.

  • @theTdawgYo

    @theTdawgYo

    7 жыл бұрын

    neogrok You can't just pull the money out of the global market. Drop the expenses? Just switch? I can't see how you're supposed to do that and keep a competitive market. Sure, some say "life is priceless" but nobody will pay out of their own pocket unless they themselves are affected. If you want the patient to have the final say you gotta be prepared to pay for it too. That means every tax-payer must be prepared to offer the best treatments for everyone. But what about old people? Or people with terminal illness that might get one year or less from said treatment? Does everyone want to pay for that too? Research is bloody expensive, and if you want to do it properly you need to be sure you can bring every spent penny back in from either production or funding-deals. Researchers struggle with this and for many their work becomes their life, only to be scrapped in the end. It's not like they don't want to help people. Most of this nasty business you focus on is purely economical manipulation by producers of drugs. It can only be fixed through government regulation/law.

    It has so far caused complete remission for ~21 patients (from the article I read) suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but it is a potential treatment for other cancer types as well. The question is how effective it is against other types of tumors (etc. tumors in the peritoneal cavity), especially since you must confirm the specific cancer antigens prior to treatment to avoid autoreactivity (reacting to healthy cells). You want to avoid the "cytokine storm" that follows as it can be life threatening (it's a "common" side-effect for this type of therapy), but usually curable with immediate treatment (such as anti-IL6 antibodies). Central tolerance as well as the half-life of the active T-cells are other shortcommings - but it is very promising!

    Theoretically, it *should* work with any type of cancer. But, being science, its guaranteed, it'll have to be tried, and proven against each and every single type of cancer, individually, before the medical community will state there's a cure. Denise, yes you can receive this treatment. I know of a woman that flew every three weeks, from Tennessee to Florida, to receive her immunotherapy clinical trial. Do your homework and you can find the right oncologist to cure you.

    Why can’t they get this rushed through for everybody. There are millions of people who are going to die so they have nothing to lose by trying this and yet it’s just a small FDA trial on just a handful of cancers? This makes no sense why the national institute of health has put thousand of people to work on this. Why FDA should hold things up? This is absolutely insane that it isn’t being widespread treating people. And why only children?

    +Test7017 +Test7017 a for profit cancer hospital? The type of hospital may explain your comment and I wouldn't disagree with you one bit but it is one sided and has not looked further into this specific Drs. affiliated hospitals and/or resources. Even Genonomics has spent 2 billion dollars and now showing real promising results after 20 years of research. One Dr. In the Midwest applies personalized genomics and individual treatment plans are showing a 20%-30% survival rate in patients with an aggressive form of cancer in later stages. That's HUGE! Just because your GF, whom I thank and commend her for working with patients who need someone who can help make their day a bit better than the last, that works in a hospital like you described that unfortunately is the majority of hospitals in our country, but there are some that are non profit, research hospitals, or whatever else not like the shitty place your GF works at. It may take years and a shit ton of $ but life is priceless.
