Imitation Gin from George Orwell's 1984 | How to Drink

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ever wanted to drink in a nightmarish dystopian horror reality? What do you mean you already are?
**********************************
This week on How to Drink I'm coming to you from the home front on Air Strip One mixing up a fresh batch of Victory Gin Martini. The 1948 George Orwell novel, '1984', features the main character Winston drinking copious amounts of this industrial waste product turned "gin" at the Chestnut Tree Cafe. The book describes it as being "oily" and "tasting of Chinese Rice Spirit" so, oh boy, this is gonna be double plus delicious. Still, I think I managed to thread the needle of remaining true to the book and also somehow drinkable.
Victory Gin Martini
• Some Dry Juniper Berries
• 2 oz. or 60 ml. Vodka
• .5 oz. or 15 ml. Kaoliang Baijiu
• 2 Dashes Orange BItters
• Muddle and shake
• Serve in Martini Glass
• Garnish with olives

Clarification for anyone looking for the Chinese wine, it's called baijiu (bai-jyoh) and the brand must be Kaoliang (cow-lee-ahng). It's pretty wild stuff because it's often (in China) around 50%avb or higher, and it's very easy to drink if you can ignore the vile flavour. Pretty similar to Korean soju, but much more potent. I've heard that the alcohol doesn't immediately hit you, but once you start taking a hit of something else, the baijiu will smack you like a truck. Please, drink with some caution (more so than normal alcohol advisories).

1984 relates to freedom of speech, which the United States of America is the only place with that right protected. The internet isn’t under government jurisdiction in the USA, website although do get to dictate their guidelines. In other countries, the internet and tv is censored to force a single narrative to the people which become propaganda in secrecy. In those countries, if you disagree or want to explore any differing opinion you can be locked up. The issue with restricting speech is that under law context doesn’t matter because laws are absolute, so as consequence people like count dankula get arrested for a blatant joke. 1984 does heavily comment on why dictate what can and can not be said with a general word that feeling can be applied which is a massive variable and blatant flaw for exploit. Such things in Canada have been used for arresting a man because he accidentally misgendered a trans woman. Neglecting a loud minority that holds a majority control over online media is a problem that’s solving itself already.

Brilliant idea for an episode, but I think this was _far_ too generous. The lengthy description of the horrid nature of the outer-party gin is one of the things that really stuck with me when I first read 1984 (over a decade before ever having more than a small taste of alcohol). I think the *true* way to get it right would be to add drops of acetone and methanol, which would naturally be insane. But I still feel like there must be some safe way to get that "oily" nature into the drink that Winston describes. By all means, do a followup involving inner-party gin!

As a Chinese, from my long-lasting experience, I can confidently say that we should either reach for the cream of the crop or completely skip Baijiu. The REAL good Baijiu is really really good, with complexity and richness approximating whiskey, just in its unique way. Have a proper Maotai Baijiu (Not the "prince", but the real thing), which costs roughly the same as any big-brand XO cognac: it will be surprisingly mellow for its high abv (50%+) but incredibly robust; the aftertaste will linger for seemingly ever, far surpassing the majority of whisk(e)ys I've ever had. But yea, the mid to lower end of Baijiu does taste more like rocket fuel than proper sippable spirit, just skip those all in all.

Kaoliang (高粱) Is the Chinese word for sorghum, which is what the spirit is made from. The 58 on the bottle means it's 58% ABV so obviously it can be quite harsh at first, but it also has a fragrance that I have not found in any other drink and it is truly uniquely delicious. What I have seen people do recently, is to put the entire bottle in the freezer. It will not freeze due to the high ABV but will take on a viscous consistency akin to light syrup, adding dimension to the drink while the low temperature dulls the harsher edges to make it more palatable. Good to see you got the good stuff right there. Can't wait to try this at home cause kaoliang is notoriously difficult to make a cocktail with. Love your content as always, Greg!

@@RaeIsGaee Fascism = socialism. Literally one and the same. Unless you're Antifa and you like calling people fascists without understanding the meaning of the word. Orwell was writing from personal experience of totalitarian government control. That's what it was like living in WW2 England. To a lesser extent than in the book, obviously. I don't know if he was a socialist, but the government described in the book is largely socialist/fascist totalitarian.

  • @RaeIsGaee

@@madmanmapper Socialism inherently believes in dissolution of the state. Orwell (a professed Democratic Socialist in his book "Homage to Catalonia), and many other DemSocs/Anarchists he fought alongside with, hated the state with a burning passion and took bullets to the neck to fight against them. That same sentiment has been carried in the EZLN, Antifascist movements, AnComs, syndicalists and many other leftists for over a century. Fascism is a central concept to almost all major Capitalist nations across the world, especially the US. Why do you think the US fights forever-wars in the middle east? Why do you think that all genocide and concentration camps are painted in a veil of protecting Nationalism? Why do you think the US has actively instituted fascist regimes, like Pinochet, in South America to crush popular fronts supporting Social policies? Socialism is inherently apposed to Fascism if you know what either terms mean, and they've always fought against one another since the conception of Fascism across Europe.
