Imaging M97 Planetary Nebula! (Backyard Astrophotography)

Ғылым және технология

Join me as I collect 2000 year old photons from the planetary nebula M97 (Owl Nebula). I used an 8" Vixen VC200L Telescope, QHY168C cooled cmos camera and Optolong L-eNhance dual narrowband astrophotography filter.

    Great video, and nice to see round stars from a VC200L...! I had one once, and I could get nothing other than triangular lobed stars from it. M97 is a great target at the moment - nice and high. I captured it with my Pentax 75SDHF so it's a bit small, but still perfectly formed ;-)

    Thanks for watching and the comment! The diamond shaped stars are inherent due to the design of the VC200L. I don't get round stars with it either. The stars in the M97 field are just small enough that they conceal the diamond shape more. Larger/brighter stars reveal it. Some people don't like the shape of the stars, some don't mind. For me I don't mind really. I'm more interested in the details of the deepsky object. The VC200L does a nice job for imaging and isn't very expensive considering the quality of it. IMO of course. Hope you're getting some clear skies! Cheers.

    Excellent video and great image! I'm curious about the L-Enhance filter. Do you process it as a standard OSC image or as separate narrow band channels in Pixinsight?

    Visibledark Astro very similar to what I use. Surprised you could get subs that long, at that focal length, with that guidescope. I have the SSAG pro and a 60mm guidescope, and I couldn’t go any longer than 5 mins at 1280mm. Tried an oag last night, and got 20min subs! 🤯

    Shawn....how are you liking that vixen?

  • @VisibledarkAstro

    @VisibledarkAstro

    4 жыл бұрын

    I'm actually liking it. It is more demanding imaging being a much longer focal length. The scope holds collimation really good. The image details are very good. The diamond shape stars (inherent in this design) is not everyone's liking. I don't mind them to much. Brighter larger stars look ok to me even if a bit diamond shaped. They have the diffraction spikes as well which helps. The smaller stars I think suffer though. Since they aren't round. But overall so far I'm happy with it and actually seeing about doing some summer nebula imaging with it now, beyond galaxy season. Close up shots of some prominent nebula features.
