    The MTMs used with a quality audio interface in their natural habitat, the studio, they are amazing and you won’t need the dac/vol combo. For audio mastering at $700 these are a steal. I do see how when using them as an audiophile reference monitor it can be sketch. The imaging combined with the flatness is what made me lust after them and the honeymoon still isn’t over 😍. Great channel, z!

    I don`t want to appear as negative(I really don`t).....but to call these mastering(or audiophile) monitors is... well.. quite a stretch(to say the least). What`s great about the MTM is that they`re portable and they sound bigger than their size suggest. But they still cannot bend the laws of physics: A small speaker is a small speaker, no matter what, and with that comes some real challenges: Bass overhang (due to bass-ports), bass reflex turbulence, and general lack of definition in the bass region. I own the Neumann KH310`s and the ILoud unfortunately doesn`t have a single chance against them. But as a portable monitor system, they`re somewhat great.

    I bought them, they’re fucking amazing even if they have this problem, it’s honestly worth it even if you have to trade off a little bit of volume, you could always do what Z said and add sub with a MiniDSP. Also, the “volume” knob is for gain compensation and it’s designed to be a cut only, so its standard position is fully maxed, you adjust it from there, input sensitivity is also very important, you need to read the manual. After having checked everything they can get more than loud enough for music listening in a 15/20 square meters room, with the 40Hz extension. Edit: I just want to add a little fun fact about these speakers, sometimes, when something goes wrong and you power them on, it can happen that any given speaker can start screaming a demonic tone at full volume at you and it's completely random :)

  • @yojoono
    @yojoono4 жыл бұрын

    It sounds like they're trying to compensate for a room-mode causing them to clip the bass even though the signal going in isn't clipping. You'd probs have to put some acoustic panels in the room to start cleaning up 150Hz and lower so that the room correction doesn't boost low frequencies a ton.

    I was on the fence getting these speakers but you convinced me buying them. Knowing the cons of them really helped me out how to set them up as good as possible. I had Focal Alpha 80s before and this stereo image blows them away easily. I don't think I can fully rely on them to mix on them but I can use them to check my mixes if the mids and high are well balanced. Thank you so much for your time and afford to make the video! Really appreciate it!

    What are the biggest differences, except size of course, in sound compared to your Focal Alphas? I have the Focal Alpha 65 Evo, and while I do enjoy them, I find it a bit hard to make them sound as good as they can in my room. I wonder if these iLoud MTMs with their calibration can fix this.

    @@monyetbesar well to me they have a more forward mid range and high. I can hear more detail in that spectrum with the iLouds. I am not 100 percent sure about the low end. I am still learning them but for the deep low end I rely on my Slate VSX. But to be honest, I enjoy the iLouds more than I ever did with the Focals. I am not saying that the Focals are bad but I think they shine way more within a well treated room which I don't have :)

    The speakers need to know how big is the room. It's the room's size and behaviour that make a speaker sound different. If you stand , lets say, very close to the mic you might block some usufull high frequencies and distort the measurments. It's easier to distort the measurements, than actually having your body alter the sound of the room. I dont know if Im making sense .

    Its like that because of the built in calibration which is a digital EQ inside it. too loud low level signal could cause that EQ to clip digitally on the output. stuff like this has built in converters so its not going to be as simple as to turn the level up or down however you like. it would be great if they had better digital level meters rather than the LED in front displaying different colors.

    Mix engineers typically monitor at low SPLs (50-70 dB) because it helps them remain objective by a) avoiding fatigue b) minimizing room mode excitation and c) avoiding non-linear artifacts that occur within the ear as sound pressure rises. Like you said, you need to listen to these speakers at whisper-quiet levels. This is *by design.* Other aspects of the speaker you pointed out as a flaws are, in fact, perfectly _de rigueur_ in pro audio. Essentially everyone in the audio production world: • has a physical volume knob within arm's reach (on a mixer, audio interface or monitoring controller) • has balanced I/O • expects to calibrate their speakers and not touch them again • has larger speakers capable of moving a lot of air If the iLoud MTM sacrificed professional workflows for consumer convenience they would fail at their core competency. Horses for courses, my friend. 🐎🏇🎠

    Also as a side note: the MTM manual states that the volume should be set to max ideally, unless you need to attenuate the level for whatever reason. From the manual: " set the volume control to MAX (full clockwise). This is the reference position for the SPL calibrated values in the specs. Adjust the volume control to a lower position only if needed or only in case you require different levels between the speakers." And I'm betting the clipping issue is due to improper signal level. Sending 010 when it's set for +4 or vice versa.

    I truly enjoy the reviews. I have been recording, mixing, and mastering for 30+yrs. I've earned the title Master Engineer MasterProducer, the one term that is thrown around too often and way too easy is the use of "Studio" anything. Just because the word studio is on the box doesn't make it a useful actual studio piece of equipment. Not wanting to go into the LONG "definition of terms and labels" I can honestly say these IK Multimedia MTMs can be used in any Top Studio. The calibration tool is very useful and the ref mixes are very close to a final mix. These most certainly Can Not be used as Mains but there are certainly a good investment.

    I'm looking to buy this ones, i don't know how much of a concern is that port noise, i mean i don't usually listen at too much volume. As for the volume knob, just buy an audio interface with a digitally controlled volume knob like Motu m2 or an Audient and you're done, that one does not mess with frequency response and diferences in L & R channels

    Hey, thank you so much for this review. I'm a professional audio system engineer and I would like to give some feedback in return for the very helpful and enjoyable expressed info in this video. 1) The square wave you're talking about is probably THD increase from the port at low frequencies, but it could also be clipping of the output stage - this would be the less likely of the two 2) We actually like smaller drivers for mid range - when they have a decent amount of motor force especially (this is a product of mms and BL Thiele Small paramteers, basically weight of the cone vs size of the coil and size of magnet) 3) That small driver can also play up higher, playing up higher meaning the crossover distortion is moved out of the critical mid band 4) This unit would have been better, and a lot more expensive with some passive radiators 5) I'm really impressed by this video, and I bought a pair for my micro studio 6) I'll compare them against my ATC master monitors sometime soon!

    @@Whirlybird88 I required something small and compact to fit onto my sit/stand desk and to that end, the iLoud MM and the Minx X201 were the perfect imperfect couple. I have a 10in shallow mount Pioneer subwoofer in my 2 seater car and sure the Minx won't reach up from the depth of hell and punch you in the chest like the Pioneer's do if you crank it up, but I didn't get the Mix's for that reason. I got it to enjoy music and fill out the low end with warmth at moderate levels without it sounding like I'm throwing a rave in my 14 x 14 bedroom/office. Depending on your region, I picked mine up thru Crutchfield in case I needed to take them up on their 60 day return policy, and I'm happy to report that won't be the case. Hope that helps =D

    One of the best experiences nearfield you say? Not surprised. Most companies seem to hold their engineers at gunpoint to make sure they don't try to maximize bass extension with small drivers or do anything beyond a two way with shit vertical dispersion. Just imagine if JBL decided to do more engineering. Thank goodness Kali is taking care of that for them with the dual concentric IN-8.

    I bought the iLoud MTMs. They are absolutely incredible. They sound like magic. It's a treat to listen to them every day. I bought them for mixing and they are incredibly clear and make mixing decisions so much more obvious and consistent. However, they're my favorite near field speakers I've ever heard for just listening to music. If you set the bass to 60hz rolloff and -3db low shelf at 80hz, they get significantly louder probably 2 or 3 times as loud while staying perfect. This is enough to begin to fill rooms rather than a near field setup The next thing I'm getting will be a subwoofer so I can blast them. (Hope iLoud makes a self calibrating sub) Two features not mentioned are that they have a very flat phase response (usually a feature in much more expensive studio monitor systems) and have a very narrow vertical spread to reduce reflections off of the table they are on.
