I think in part, as skaters age and there are more of us we're willing to keep the ideals of skating and that punk spirit alive, but not necessarily by going to a street spot to get hassled by cops. The diy spot is something in-between straight street skating and park skating.

100 percent agree, has the street feel but you'll likely not get kicked out by cops

I think skaters are working out it’s so much more satisfying skating something you built. Nothing beats imagining an obstacle or structure and making it happen for people to enjoy. It’s the creative instinct that makes us skateboarders. Great channel man 🤘🏻

One of the best DIY spots ever is the Foundation Spot in Asheville NC. same guys been working on it for 15 years. it's gone from the most basic abandoned lot to a park on a professional scale with fantastic concrete work

For me, I’m closer to 40 than 30, and honestly, not as good and a bit more fragile, than I was when I was young. I grew up without a park in my town, so “skating”, was finding a loading dock, a stair set or a curb we could wax, without getting kicked out. We’d find ourselves alone in abandoned parking lots, away from the general public. Skateparks are the opposite and full of kids with parents my age watching from the sidelines. As amazing as the new parks in my area are, the atmosphere of a skatepark is closer to a little league game. Not exactly a place I’d be comfortable hanging out at and one of the reasons I hadn’t touched my board for almost a decade until recently falling back in love with it. I look at skating as more of an expression than a sport. Like I said, injury and physical ability has changed the way I ride my board and filming, editing, building or fixing up spots are all a part of that self expression. It’s still “skating” and I wouldn’t enjoy either facet as much without the other. To answer your question, creativity, self expression and freedom is what drew me to skating and DIY spots check all those boxes. Thanks for the content and be proud of your contribution! Your videos have inspired thousands

I’m looking to build a diy quarter pipe next to a hiking trail on an abandoned road, it’d make for a really cool sunset shot cause you can see the silhouette of dtla from the spot but I’m nervous to build it cause it’d be my first diy build and it’s in a really wealthy neighborhood

In theory you don’t think it’d had taken as long to come up w/ a diy park particularly using quickset etc. I mean we were building shit for skate jams from mid 80’s to whenever. Looks fun we used to try and find abandon buildings etc and build them inside the buildings.

I think sterile skatepark design (Street league/Olympic style) will drive more skaters to build more creative features. Also building DIY spots is something once you start your don’t really stop. Well I haven’t yet and it’s been 7 years this year. So as more people are seeing how to and how easy it can be to make something the diy scene will continue to grow.

planning departments should be incorporating skating into their architecture. young people are active, and its great to keep them active. imagine if you had a full on skate course incorporated into the general architecture of a town or city, so people could move quickly on skateboards, traversing around pedestrians using wallrides and launch ramps etc etc. it would be incredible. the idiots who make skatestoppers and use them, are the idiots who should have no say in society. the people who should have a say in society, are the people who use society. imagine incorporating everyones enjoyments in a streamlined track towards the destination. doesnt matter if you walk, cycle, skate or slide, everyone could be flowing throughout. i wish i could provide a picture for the image i am trying to convey

I am really curious if cities or towns would be up for city sanctioned DIY spots. If cost of building a skate park is a problem for the city and it's obvious skaters can and would build a spot with their own money it seems like a win win. I guess maybe that takes away from what a DIY spot is at it's core but I do wonder if it would work.

Successful DIY spot sanctioning depends on the personalities of the people on the City Council and the managers of the city agencies that deal with physical public spaces like Property Management/ Rec & Parks. Your best bet is to find the Councilperson, Senior Exec, or facilities manager who has a kid or grandkid who likes to skate. That's the person that you want to connect with, pitch the idea, show the space, make them like you, and then get them to sell the idea to the necessary decision-makers, if any. If you're in a situation where there's nobody like that in the senior exec or legislative ranks then you'll have to sell the DIY idea to people who may be unfamiliar with skateboarding culture so you may be dealing with attitudes ranging from indifference to revulsion. Your best asset when approaching a city to negotiate sanctioning a DIY spot is a small but strong advocate coalition made up of local business owners, skaters who are also working professionals (especially from classically white collar occupations like engineering, medical doctors, etc), teachers (bonus points if they also skate), and one or two of the young local skaters who are exceptionally smart, so well at school, and present well in front of a non-skater audience. You want to present a coordinated message to the city decision-makers: you represent a responsible, law-abiding, and community-supported group of people who enjoy a sport and wish to have a legitimate location to practice their sport and here is your proposal for how to make that happen... Zack Dowdy is actually quite experienced in dealing with city governments on this topic so you ought to ask him if you have any case specific questions. Good luck!

@@steventhehistorian Oh I'm not planning anything. I'm in Colorado where have a plethora of skate parks and an occasional DIY. I'm also an accountant so I see things through the financial lens. I know cities here have spent 10s of millions on skateparks. I also know smaller towns don't have that kind of money. In the late 90s when parks started going up there was a ton of fundraisers to help get them built cause cities didn't want to spend the money. That's why I can see DIY being a smart alternative. You bring up great points though, it's not always about the money. A lot has to do with the personalities on the city council and the people that pitch the idea.

I have a question. If an area is littered with skateparks should we even be making DIY spots? I have no dog in this fight and enjoy it all but I would imagine a difference in a area with no skateparks getting DIY and maybe the city realizing we need to build them something as opposed to an area with so many that they will immediately shut it down if you tried?
