Three B-24Ds attack enemy shipping in open water. Look at what 36 1000 pounders can do!
Please do have in mind that this is not supposed to be an accurate representation of reality. That is why the video title begins with "IL-2 1946". I am aware of IL-2s flaws and there is no need to tell me of them. This is just a rough approximation of what such a raid could have been like, no history lesson.
This is a recording of a multiplayer mission in which three players took part. Thank you to:
DarkenedFantasies & Tony Kito
Darky piloted "Puss 'n Boots", Tony "Special Delivery" and Fishyyy "Southern Beauty".

Great animation. My dad was a navigator in B-24s flying in the 90th Bomb Group/319th Sq. late in the war. He said when flying, you didn't hear anything except the engines or if someone was talking on the headset. The only exception was once their airplane was hit with flak in the nose armor (B-24J) just below the gunner. He speculated the shell didn't explode being below the altitude it would have been set for. No critical damage, but he said you felt and heard that. He also said you could feel the vibration when the gunners were shooting their .50 c machine guns. Thanks for sharing.

As a USAF vet I can tell you most pilots would probably have done that considering the damage and possible casualties but there are some who want to expend all their ordnance and inflict as much damage as they can before disengaging, but sometimes it’s best to cut your losses and get home…

I think those 75 mm cannons were pretty useless against ships. The fire rate was very slow (they were manually loaded), the muzzle velocity and accuracy was fairly low and they only fired high explosive ammunition. Rocket projectiles were much more effective against merchant ships, particularly those with armour piercing (i.e. solid shot) warheads. Incidently, the auto-loading 57 mm Molins Gun in the "Tse Tse" (FB XVIII), version of the de Havilland Mosquito only fired solid steel AP shells in its use as a submarine attack aircraft.

Yes, but it would be suicide to expose the aircraft to flak of that intensity. Even the flak guns of a single U boat could bring down a Liberator with relative ease. Low level skip bombing attacks were best handled by faster and more maneuverable twin engine aircraft, though heavies did carry out such attacks successfully under the cover of darkness.

On 11 August 1943, commanding a Liberator, he saw U-468 on the surface and attacked. The aircraft was hit by the U-Boat's AA and caught fire. Trigg held his aim, straddled the U-Boat with his bombs, then crashed. The U-Boat sank and no one from the Liberator survived. Survivours from U-468, including the Captain, were picked up later by an Allied ship and it was their testimony about the action that resulted in Trigg's Victoria Cross. @@thegreatdominion949 B-24s were used in all theaters of WW II and had a very good record. In fact, they actually could deliver more goods on target than the B-17. Any bombing raid over 400 miles saw the B-17's bomb load drop faster than the B-24's and at 800 miles, that was it for the B-17 while the B-24 with almost a ton and a half of bombs onboard could do 1200 mile runs. Both planes were rated at 8000 lbs at 400 miles but the B-17 was rated at 4500 lbs at 800 while the B-24 was rated at 5000. That is an extra 500 pounder or a couple extra 250s. A direct hit from a flak gun could blow a wing off of either plane. But as the B-24 was the faster plane, it was harder to hit. And far more of then were built. 1.5 times more of them than the B-17. I lost a number of relatives in B-17s in WW II so when given the choice of a flight in a B-17 or a B-24, I took the ....................................................................................................... 11:03 An Akizuki-class destroyer would've easily obliterated a giant target like the B-24D with her 8 100mm dual-purpose artillery guns. Especially when they fly this low it'd be a clay pigeon shootout for the destroyer. The heavy bomber came straight at her while Akizuki was running about 10-15 knots, her two bow-mounted turrets holding two 100mm guns each should've made scrapmetal out of that bomber. Which difficulty setting are you using? I also have the game, heavily modded to realism standards, and won't even attempt to go this low with any land-based four-engined heavy bomber against armed naval targets like destroyers. While the video gives excellent cinematic shots and is overall well-recorded, credits to you for that, it ruins the immersion in my personal opinion due to the fact that these kinds of operations where never conducted during World War II with the use of only three B-24s against a destroyer-escorted convoy. I have personally played an alternate history mission I created way back in the past using SAS Modact 3 and formerly with Ultrapack 3 where land-based B-25Cs would intercept the Battle of Midway's landing force escorted by just a few destroyers, and I totally got my wings and tails shot off from several B-25s that took part due to destroyer fire. I have never played IL-2 1946 vanilla but I ám quite stunned that these Akizuki-class destroyers didn't manage to bring three B-24Ds down.
