I can't believe just how authentic This truly is, considering how inaccurate the rocket fire can be sometimes truly shows that they went into as much realism as possible. My grandfather was a pilot of one of these B-25s and I was fortunate and blessed to have his flight jacket as a souvenir from him when he passed away.
My grandfather told many stories of being a tail gunner in a B25. Incredible stuff!

Mine was a top gunner
I had a late friend (RIP) who was in a B-25 squadron in the Pacific. He said they did “skip bombing” and all of his squadron’s B-25s had 8 nose mounted and 4 side mounted .50 ca. machine guns, but no B-25Hs. 🇺🇸

I wonder what the Japanese were thinking when the U.S. rolled this out.
Just a tiny bit of nitpicking. B-25 units rarely used more than 3 or 4 B-25Hs in a squadron. I have a bunch of photos from my uncle's B-25 squadron (12th Bombardment Group in Burma) and if they had all 12 bombers active in a mission, you'd see 3 B-25Hs and 9 B-25Js. Th reason for this is that while B-25s were used extensively in ground support, they also were still used frequently in altitude bombing. The B-25H does not have a bombadier. The pilot manned all forwarding firing machine guns and would also lock the top turret so that it was shooting forward as well. If they were using the 75mm cannon, the navigator would be reloading it. It wasn't an automatic cannon. But to be able to bomb from altitude, you would need someone using the Norden bomb sight and the B-25H did not utilize the Norden. By the way, the animation from the software problem was flat out wrong. The B-25H did not have a co-pilot. Like the A-26 Invader, you had only a pilot. One thing that might make some think that it had a co-pilot is videos of current B-25s that are still flying. There are only a couple of B-25Hs and they modified the seating arrangement post-war to put in a co-pilot. There was a jump seat for the navigator, but there was only one set of controls. Plenty of B-25 books will show photos of the B-25H cockpit, with only one set of controls. Also, against shipping the two formidable weapons were the battery of forward firing machine guns and skip bombing (my uncle won the top flying medal for skip bombing a 500 pound bomb along a train track and into the tunnel of a mountain, causing a cave in and stopping traffic on that track for awhile). He didn't use rockets much at all (if at all) in Burma. There is a new book coming out by Osprey this fall on B-25 units in Burma and I'm really excited to see if there are photos of his plane, but in looking at all the photos of the 81st, 82nd, and 83rd squadrons, I've yet to see a single photo of one of them using rockets, though that might just be coincident). Anyway, I know it is just a game but nitpicking is always fun. And besides, his involvement in the war is my closest family connection to the war. My Dad was 16 when the war ended. My mother had a brother who was an MP in the South Pacific, and was part of the occupying force for two years after the end of the way. But my other uncle flew over 70 missions in Burma. By the way, one of the planes he flew alongside on many occasions was with the B-25H with the name Bones. It was, I think, the 5,000th B-25 made in the Kansas City B-25 plant and it was signed by a huge number of the workers at the plant. It shows up a lot in books and even on a couple of posters. So because I'm proud of my uncle's contribution to the war, I had to see inaccuracies in the depiction of the plane he flew.

That is awesome! There is an American novelist i love a lot named John Williams who wrote three critically acclaimed novels: STONER, AUGUSTUS (which won a National Book Award), and BUTCHER'S CROSSING. He retired from teaching in Colorado to Faydtteville, Arkansas where he died. In reading what I could find of his boo I was fascinated to learn that he had served as a freshman in a B-25 in Burma the same time my uncle was flying in the 83rd Squadron there. There couldn't have been more than around 150 enlisted crewmen on B-25s so I wonder if he and my uncle crossed paths there.my understanding is that there was less of a gap between enlisted and officers in Burma. It is a small world.

+1 whosiskid - My dad was also a young B-25 pilot during WWII. He served in Tunis, Tunisia, N. Africa, in 1943 in Jimmy Doolittle's outfit the year after the famous Tokyo raid. His B-25 outfit was tasked with trying to sever the never-ending Nazi supply line and to destroy the growing weapons stockpile hidden underground at Pantelleria island in the Mediterranean Sea. That island was a natural rock fortress so a formidable bombing task for the twin-engined medium bombers. The situation was worse because Pantelleria was also very well protected by the Luftwaffe. My dad complained that their B-25s were all painted desert pink and stuck out like a sore thumb. Of course this was the designated AAC camouflage scheme for N. Africa at the time. Cheers from Thailand!

Who: Have you ever heard of a heads up display in a war production B-25? I have flown two B-25J's been in three. Never have seen a B-25 H. Did they have that?
Another point of interest in this video: It appears that none of the "H" models are using their most effective weapon in this attack: The 75mm cannon. A couple of 75mm rounds on the target can wreak more havoc than a long blip of 50 cal.
@Fishyyy
5 жыл бұрын
I understand how one could get the impression that the 75mm cannons weren't used. The impression is wrong, though. I wondered about it myself, after the mission I checked if I had even binded the key for firing the cannon, because I did not really notice its impact. I had weapon 1 (Machine guns) and weapon 2 (Cannon) on the same key, which means that I fired the cannon every time the machine guns were fired, too. The AI always attacks with both weapons at the same time, btw. The problem is the representations of the cannon in the game. The tracer does not look different to the ones of the 50s, so it's only one of many and not that visibile. Also, the impact does not really look all that different to the ones of the 50s, neither. The reload time of the cannon is 12 seconds and you need 5 hits to sink a normal freighter, it's not that effective after all.

In real combat the 45 cals were used to great effect, it cleared the deck of soldiers that might been a transport from shooting at them and helped prevent anti aircraft fire, as they were on a low level bombing runs. Lots of the supplies being brought in with barges late in the war were targeted by the b25 straffers and only needed 50cals to light them up. Playing war games on a computer is not the real thing. And it was a great weapon when Zeroes attacked the planes from the front Read the book Air Combat at 20 feet by Garrett Middlebrook, He flew the real missions and it's a great read.
This reminds me of the Call of Duty Mission with the PBY
There is a B 25 shown at the Battleship Alabama memorial in Mobile. Wicked looking plane with various configurations. This one was all guns and looked vicious.
Amazing video!!
I have heard they had tremendous success using modified depth charges set to the most shallow depth , flying mast height back to front and dropping it just in front of the ship which gets a keel breach when it passes over it
Very nice job
They really need this thing in Great Battles. A whole b25 variant DLC could work I think.
Love it absolutely love it
Great videos. I have seen you fly German and American planes a lot. Can you make some videos on flying Japanese aircraft? Such as flying B5N torpedoing enemy carriers. Zeros defending a task group. Or level bombing in aircraft like B5N or Betty.

Correct. My uncle said when he fired the cannon the planes would lose quite a bit of speed from the recoil. They had 21 rounds that had to be manually reloaded by the navigator. Small bit of trivia: the navigator for my uncle's plane was a fanatic photographer and today a preponderance of photos of B-25s in Burma - except for the 1st Air Commando unit, which operated separately under the famous Cochran - in the air were taken from my uncle's plane. Sadly, that means there are almost no photos of his plane in the air. I have 5 photos on the ground and only one in the air. More trivia. Cochran roommate in college (Ohio State? - not sure) was the guy who drew and wrote the famous strip TERRY AND THE PIRATES. So when the characters went to war they flew in the 1st Air Commandos. Cochran appeared as a character. He is one of the most fascinating characters of the war. He'd allow his pilots to fly either P-51As or B-25Hs. He only wanted the Allison Mustangs because the Allison was a much better engine at low level, and his guys only flew at around ground level. Look him up. A fascinating pioneer of integrating aerial support with ground forces.
BEAUTIFUL !!!
Thumbs up! Question is it the visual 8 mod that is adding to the ship fires effect?

Pappy Gunn field modified a bunch of B-25s early in the war, long with A-20s, but North American start adding kits for all B-25H planes and then B-25Js. However, not all planes had all the guns. It depended on preferences. All B-25H planes had 4 machine guns and a 75mm cannon in the nose - they came out of the factory that way. B-25Js came with kits for up to four side machine guns and up to 8 guns in the nose, or 2 or 3 of they chose a solid nose. My uncle flew a B-25H, which had no co-pilot.
I dont belive the B25 would go above mask height, all 50 cals, keeping the nips AA down then skip bombing a few into the side of the ship. The rear gunner would then continue to keep the aa gunners busy.
When the bombers would peel away from an attack and climb would the tail gunners fire on the target?
@jesseboombatts8399
5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering this too. ... one would think out of all the guns you would want to save the tail gun ammo in case a fighter got behind you... but it must have been hard to resist 🤗

Japanese freighters and destroyers were quite vulnerable to .50 cal gunfire as they had no armor. Aviation innovator Pappy Gunn came up with the idea of loading up the nose of a B-25 with .50 cals and the rest was history...
Need to get back in the pilot seat 😊🍿
Just curious why, in this game, the cannon was never used by the player?

I had weapon 1 (machine guns) and weapon 2 (cannon) on the same button. The cannon was fired every time I used the machine guns, it's just not well represented by the game. It's a mod and they are of, let's say, varying quality. The reload time of the gun is 12 seconds, so there was never a 2nd shot in a burst.

I cannot see any return fire coming from those convoy ships and what about some serious escort ships such as cruisers, destroyer 's and frigates. Also the ships would probably let off smoke to try and conceal themselves plus attempt zig zagging . I imagine a tanker could really blow if hit. Otherwise nice attempt but you made it a bit easier than a real life situations.

Why are you attacking at low altitude from tbe side? A fighter-bomber would strafe a ship from behind ; from stem to stern, leading the target. Ship armour is weakest from above (deck plating and open turrets / AA mounts) Ships have their thickest armour plating on their sides NOT A CLUE

They would first strafe stem to stern to kill everyone on the top deck, then attack from the side with bombs, skipping the bombs on the sides. The bombs would then sink 20 feet or so and then explode by time, where they would do more damage.

FACT: "The surrender of Imperial Japan was announced on August 15 and formally signed on September 2, 1945, bringing the hostilities of World War II to a close. By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was incapable of conducting major operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent." So... had the "MERCAN" forces attacked any Japanese shipping in "1946" it would have been deemed "A New Act of War" and place the "MERCANs" into a global predicament of being charged with a "Genocide", which is why they went to war in the first place... But like in WWI, they didn't want to get involved to help their fellow man until they themselves were attacked...
