That series really is disappointing. I expected so much better.

when you look at all that crossfire from the turrets, it gives you a sense of what those pilots were up against. except in their case they couldn't click on 'quick mission' again once they were hit!!

Those b17 guns really where not that effective. It was the sheer amount of them and the escorts they worried about. German pilots never flew behind any bomber at all they just made high speed passes, diving usually and shot through the formation and the gunners had so little time to aim in it was nearly impossible to hit.

@@dawhiteeazye2466 They dive through formations BECAUSE they would be chewed up otherwise. That's a better alternative than them getting nice and comfy around bomber formations, which shows the defensive guns were doing their job

Those are early B-17Fs. They lack the forward defensive nose armament and the Luftwaffe fighters exploited that weakness to employ “head-on” attacks to shoot them down. Many B-17s were lost in these attacks. Later B-17G versions have a “chin” gun turret below the nose to counter the “head-ons”. 🇺🇸 👍

IL-2 1946 is one of if not the best WW2 combat flight simulator. No if's what's or but's

Had a B-17 visit a few years ago. What amazed me was the "crew weight 1200 lbs". 10 man crew!

Pilot, co-pilot, bombardier, navigator, engineer / top turret gunner, radio operator, left & right waist gunner, ball turret gunner and rear gunner. They sometimes carried additional crew members, for example navigators in lead planes.

Yes, I knew that, but 1200 lbs for a 10 man crew makes for some small guys. I guarantee you the movie crew of "Memphis Belle" was way-y-y-y over that.

I guess 180 to 200 pounds per guy would be more fitting. 160 pound guys with 40 pounds of gear. Thick leather clothing, helmets and flak vests have their weight, too.

In the early 70's, the Navy had me down to skin & ribs and at 6'4" I was 210lbs. Flying T-28 was nice a roomy, but when I switched over to Advanced Jet at VT-21, the TA4F/J was a snug fit. In WWII the only plane I most likely fit into was a P-47 as it was BIG.

Well, with those measurements, you certainly would not have become a ball turret gunner :D

Germans also had very accurate ground radar, they knew exactly from when and where the bombers were coming, even can pick out individual bombers also. That's why later in the war Allies used counter measures like dropping aluminum foils or electronic jamming!

Considering how ridicoulusly hard it was to hit those German fighters, it must have been such a victory and moral boost every time you saw a fighter go down back in the days! Awesome clip! 😊

25:07 - The wing of the FW190 clearly passes right through the B-17’s wing spar, both starboard engines, fuel tanks, etc... And the little fighter completely destroys the four engine bomber... Yet comes out unscathed?! Must be that superb German over-engineering.

It looks like that in the replay. What happened was that Roberth hit the bomber with his tail fin.

Brings back memories of “Memphis Belle” and “Twelve O’Clock High”. The latter is still a strong movie to watch and learn.

ThePainterr - Think they were Me109’s and Fw190’s. Edit: My apologizes. I had replied to your comment before I had gotten toward the end of the video. The BF110’s certainly did tear through the B-17’s. Poor guys were like sitting ducks against those cannons.

Hi everyone. I have a little question for mission creator: did you made a combat box formation manually setting each plane position by the object properties window or there is an easier way? Does the Il-2 allow to create your own user formations?

I did use the formation feature in this case. You can 'connect' up to four flights of four together. In this case, I connected nine and eleven aircraft per combat box.

Me 109 would be in a museum next to the B17 in 1946.

Minong Maniac the game is called 1946 because it has planes of up to 1946. And it’s bf109 not ME109 because of the time it was designed in, when the company was still called Bayerische Fluzeugwerke if I spelled that correctly. EDIT: slight misspell

The 109 was never meant to be a bomber killer but was pressed into service to do that job because it had the high-altitude performance necessary to duel with the American bomber streams at high altitude. The FW 190's radial engine lost more performance than the 109's inline v-12 above 20,000 ft.

Rob Bader Your comment is not quite right. 109S in the G series had a gondola under each wing. This either had a 20mm or 30mm cannon. Plus an engine mounted 30mm cannon made the 109 ' Kannone Vogel ' ( Cannon Bird) a very good bomber destroyer. The downside was a loss of maneuverability,which could prove fatal against the escort fighters.

Yes, you are not incorrect, but as the war progressed, the G-6 was essentially the last version regularly armed with the 20mm pods. Almost no 109s carried 2x30s, as the Mk108 barely fit into the gondola, and added even more weight than the MG151/20. See page 51, Osprey Publishings "Aircraft of the Aces - Bf 109 Defense of the Reich Aces". As the war progressed, the 190A6/A7, and most importantly, the 190A8/R2 Sturmbock, would lead the attacks against the bomber stream. The R2s extra armor had the same effect as the 109s pods, it made them vulnerable to counterattack. The Sturmstaffel units almost always flew with 109 escort above them to fend off the Allied fighters.

MrStoneycool69 - Their intent was most certainly not to purposely kill civilians. The 8th AF, the 15th AF (in which my Grandfather served as a Navigator on a B-17G - 15th AF, 97th Bomb Group, 340th Bomb Squadron) were always given military targets, but there were various factors which sometimes made the bombs go off target and unfortunately cause civilian casualties. Wind was a large factor especially when they were releasing the bombs at 30,000+ feet in the air. Also, they were relying on the lead plane to be on target as all of the bombers released their payload at the exact same time the lead plane did. If the lead B-17’s Navigator had lead them to the wrong target, or one that “looked” like the intended target, or the Bombardier was off with his timing even a second or two, that meant the entire squadron was also off. That’s why my Grandfather said he did not want to be a Bombardier and became a Navigator instead. It was kind of the lesser of two evils. Yes, he was leading them to their target, but he wasn’t the one “pulling the trigger” so to speak. He had 2 confirmed kills which certainly ate at him, but he said he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he had been the one who had dropped a payload of bombs that had drifted off target and killed innocent women and children. With the two kills that he did get, he said he knew that those Germans were trying to kill him and his crew, and that it was him or them. He said he took no glory in potentially taking the lives of two other men who were doing the exact same thing he was doing which was fighting for their country, and fighting for a cause they wholeheartedly believed in.

Some of the Veteran pilot's of the Luftwaffe told the newer ones to approach fire and close their eyes.

German fighters took their toll on american bombers during raids on Germany during ww2 and some were shot down by gunners and escort fighters, this was intense aerial combat

yeah, feels like 109s take 3-5 passes before they make a kill, 190s take 2-3 and the 110 just sort of glances in the bomber's direction and the bomber spontaneously combusts XD

Great video! As usual, amazing work! Keep it up. I do have one question regarding scenarios for any future full bombing missions: could you do a recreation of the famous Schweinfurt/Regensburg Dual Strike of August 17, 1943? Or at least focus on one of the two task forces? I think that'd be an awesome video! Again, great work and looking forward to the next one! Cheers!

this is a game yes but think about it your in a B-17 can you imagine all the hell what the brave went men through and gave their life for our freedom over 22,000 never came home all I can say is R.I.P we will remember them

The first USAAF Mustangs arrived in November '43, major use began in '44. The raid depicted here happened in April '43.

I know what your problem is, Hit ALT+Tab (Switches windows) and go back into it. It should let you be able to move your cursor around. Let me know if it doesn't work

The mighty 8th would have been aware of the prohibitive losses the RAF experienced early in the war mounting daylight raids. We switched to night operations. The believed invincibility of the B17 was sorely tested and without growing fighter support would the 8th have joined our night operations ?. For practical purposes would there have been too many aircraft airborne,assembling over our small island with attendant risks ?. Thank you P51 !. Not overlooking P40 and P38.

Get out there and defend it! Which reminds me, there were guys who signed in to ram a heavy bomber with their 109. Short, basic training, pretty much suicida missionl. They tried it once, it sort of worked, but not well enough to continue the program.

Hey Fishyyy, I got a few questions. I recently downloaded BAT under the impression it was the one-all mod or something for IL2. I have been looking into 1946 modding for a few months and I just can't quite get the grasp of which mods to use and which update the game should be in. I recently found Dark Blue World which confused me even more. Alright so this is what I have heard so far and my question is can they all coexist? Even the ones that keep telling you to update to 4.09. Was that because 4.09 was the most recent patch at the time that specific mod came out? - Dark Blue World - Ultra Pack - VPmodpack - BAT

Alright will do man thanks. One question before I go into detail though. How big is your IL2 1946? I currently have BAT (60 GB) and just now VPmodpack (25 GB) installed. That is almost a whopping 100GB for a 15 year old game. What am I doing wrong or is it really just this big? These mods all offer different features and hardly explain what sets them apart. Do the players in this community download every single mod and end up with these insane sizes?

You're not doing anything wrong, the file sizes are normal. Most communities probably end up agreeing on one mod pack and it's enough to have that one. I personally do have 15 IL-2 installations, but i'm an exception. I just need a lot of different stuff for the videos^^

It seems as in the history that the FW-190 A-6/8 are better suitable for combat against 4engined US-bombers. Radar equipped nigth fighters however were never used against B17 and B-24 in daylight operations.

Actually, radar equipped Bf-110 nightfighters were used against B-17s. They suffered heavy losses and were redrawn, though. The inaccurate part are the 30mm Mk 108s of the 110, those were introduced month after this raid happened.

sometimes the plane might not be damaged, but it's controls might be crippled. For example, several lucky shots might disable the elevator control, while the plane itself doesn't appear to be damaged much. and without elevator you're pretty much done for. A plane is a complicated system, so there are many places where things can go wrong.
