One of the best how to videos I've ever seen. Well done! And just what I needed to plan installing our Ikea island.

Thanks!! Your description is very clear and thorough. The Ikea kitchen representative told me those little black legs would hold up my island - I agree - There's no way! I love your hack with the Capita legs. Genius! My cabinets are being delivered next week. I've found that a Dewalt Maxfit right angle drill attachment works great for getting a drill in tight spaces. (Hopefully I won't have to move the island to secure it.) I'm using one to install deck rails (attach it to my impact driver) and it's now one of my new favorite tools.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Those Ikea screws are actually Pozidriv, not Phillips. If you have the correct bit there is no problem.

OMG!!! Thank you so much for sharing!! Your explanation is very clear and precise. We had no clue how to install the island with the sektion blocs. We have procrastinated for 3 months as it seemed so complicated. We are so thankful!! Merci infiniment 😃. We are off to install the island 😅.

@@postbeam8200 I can't wait to see how your kitchen turns out when it's all done. The idea for the led lighting behind the upper cabinets is brilliant. I told my wife that with tips and tricks like this it's gunna make our kitchen absolutely the show piece of the house.

Ikea do not use Phillips cross head acrews. They use pozidrive screwa. I personally prefer washer head flat head screws. Love your explanation and I will tey those screws.

This is great video, really clear and thorough explanation, really helpful to me doing an almost identical project. So thank you! I had a question- I saw another video of a different technique where instead of using the IKEA brackets to anchor to the floor they built up a stack of three 2x4s, anchored to the floor (~4.5" total height), used shims to get flush to the cabinet bottom (cabinet is already leveled), then drilled the cabinets into those 2x4 stacks. Do you think there is any difference between that method and yours, pros/cons? Thanks!

As a carpenter I love me some 2x4's, but in this application I think the IKEA system is a better solution. Because I used the modified IKEA feet to get the cabinet level, I don't want to move the island or do anything that might throw it out of level. The IKEA system allows the the 2x4 anchor block to be raised up to meet the underside of the cabinets then you secure the cabinet to it and fill in all the extra screw holes to lock it permanently into position. It is just as strong as the 2x4 system but with more finesse and precision in my opinion. The 2x4 option requires shimming them up and most floors are uneven so it's going to take a some persuasion to get it all even. Then you need to screw down through it all and hit the floor joists to really anchor it together, that is hard enough without a cabinet blocking your view. I would follow the IKEA design of using a bracket, attaching it to the floor then attaching it to the cabinet. Good luck I am glad the video helped!

awesome idea! is that just a piece of 3/4 plywood for the top? do you have the same on the non-island cabinets too?

why did you put the brackets on the same side of the of the 2X4?

IKEA screws are not Philips - they are Posidrive. Get a set of proper drivers and they won't strip out. Makes all the difference in the world for all things IKEA.

Could you share the process to do the plywood countertop? It looks so good.

Hi! Well it is called ¾ inch 7-ply Birch plywood, It comes in a 4ft x 8ft sheet (about $95 each) and I just set it onto and then mark underneath how much overhang I want and then cut it with the Festool TS-55 Track Saw. Eventually we are going to instal granite but this Birch is very tough and works as a "temporary" countertop. Good luck!

FYI, the point of the squeegee side is to avoid liquids from seeping under the cabinets. You might want to invert the orientation of your toe quuicks.

The squeegee ends up preventing the toe kick from sitting down flush with the floor and you end up with a little gap that looks weird to me. And unfortunately it isn't really going to stop a spill from my testing, due to floor unevenness and the fact that there is very little pressure pushing down again the floor, liquid is going to get underneath in my experience. But you can mount it either way that's the cool part about doing it yourself :)

Do you think it is possible to have the island not anchored to the floor and just use the capita legs permanently?

  • @JL-hn6hi
    @JL-hn6hi3 жыл бұрын

Thanks! And thanks for the jokes :-) . Q. When using the toekick, do you think it’s designed it so the goal height [of the toekick] is the height of the solid toekick area or the solid part PLUS the clear gasket, or -as you said- it doesn’t really matter because it’s not visible? (I signed on for the Sektion wooden legs adventure LOL, which is a couple additional parts besides the toekick, so lots of measurements.)

Sorry about the corny jokes thanks for putting up with them :) A: I adjust the height of the CAPITA legs to allow for the solid part of the toe kick PLUS the clear gasket. As you said it really doesn't matter because it won't be visible so I generally leave a little extra 'wiggle room' above the toe kick to make installation much easier. Also, since all the legs are not going to be the same length as they are adjusting for level and compensating for the unevenness of the floor the gap above the toe kick will vary since it is pushed down to follow the floor. Good luck with your Section Wooden legs design it sounds cool!

these feet are a whole lot easier to work with than making boxes, esp if you have uneven floors
