How did u get admission in foreign universities?
Sir You are doing a great duty by inspiring the young minds to tackle their educational & career issues at same time young must realise that education is training their body & mind with relevant skills for good work required by the society at same time catering to your life & day today aspirations yet no training is an end in itself , changing societies & industries will always throw new challenges & the present rigourous training will work as a stepping stone to learn new ones as per future requirements Thankyou so much Sir regards👍
This is not just great information, this is actually learnings, experiences and outstanding efforts made by you sir so as we can get some of the great insights into the wonderful curriculum.Thank you very much sir for sharing this info, and keep making videos like this.❤️❤️
Thank you a lot SirJi for having such a boosting session for people who qualified gate 💯💯💯
Highly recommended video for a MTech students. Thank you sir it is really helpful.
Sir, big respect to you. My comment is long. Please be patient with me. _My background_ : I did my BTech graduation in mechanical engg from a govt college then came below 1500 rank in GATE Mechanical and got admission in IIT (one of the top 7 IITs of course ). Yes it is true I attempted GATE with focus on PSU jobs (middle class dilemma) but higher studies was also on the radar. I finally got a job in a non-core sector with a decent package but the motivation for higher studies died with the IIT experience I had. _My IIT experience_ : The moment I got into the course work the image of IIT which I had, all shattered. I discovered all the course work in IIT is nothing fancier than what we did in our college (to be precise , in a tier 2 college ). The main burning came in the final year. In the thesis work, I noticed most of the students in MTech are involved in a thesis work which has already been done by some other PhD students or their previous MTech students. There was no originality in thinking. Most of the work is run of the mill type rustic research papers with no industrial application or with economic viability. It seems the thesis work is being done by the students-professors because it has to be completed. There was no motivation to work on original thinking in the IIT. To my despair, I also found most of the professors are not helping the students at all. Students learn from the PhD seniors or by themselves. Professors usually take follow-up meetings every couple of weeks or one every month. In many cases students approach prof for help or to learn but they get nothing. I personally had experience of no help from prof (guide and co guide), many of my friends got no help as well. Actually if they get any help they get this from their lab seniors (PhD students who came from other colleges/NITs/new IITs). Many of my friends in my MTech batch will never turn towards PhD as we witnessed how pathetic the PhD situation is there in the top IITs itself. I have friends in PhD, MTech in other top IITs too. The culture is more or less the same. MTech/MS/PhD is like a self help type of 2/3/5 year curriculum. I believe there is no value addition to me (or any one passing from IITs) in technical knowledge because of studying at IIT. Only the tag of IIT helped me to get a job. At present there is lots of content education (even for the masters level) available on the internet which makes IITs redundant. _Solution_ : I believe you are active in the youtube space to assess the system better from the perspective of the student community and want to change it the best way possible. I'd like to suggest that you write a petition to the concerned ministry to pass a bill (or something like that) so that more and more private collaborations are done in thesis and PhD projects. Only a result oriented, for profit R&D activity will make the system excel. Many of my friends/seniors had way low GATE rank, to be qualified into an IIT. But they pursued higher studies abroad. They are in a better position in core MNCs now, where masters from top IIT will hardly get the chance. Here in India we are creating more and more competition (JEE/GATE etc etc) but the final product is nearly garbage !

Thanks for sharing your experiences. However, I have had different experiences. Note that after completing my Dual Degree I completed my PhD at IIT Kharagpur itself. This brought me in close contact with the PhD student community. Right now I am supervising PhD students. So I have the perspective from both sides. And I can say with confidence that it is very much possible to do very good quality PhD work from India that is appreciated globally. Of course there are going to be challenges. Regarding supervision, in any kind of research work, the main impetus and drive has to come from the student himself. The supervisor is not there to hand hold the students rather to share ideas, give pointers, and take difficult calls on the overall direction of the research. Above all, it is to mentor his students so that they can become full-fledged independent researchers themselves. And, I sm sorry that you had the experience contrary to all this but trust me, such kind of mentorship does exist. But at the end of the day, the onus is on the student. And, trust me also when I say this, sll the top PhD candidates at top universities abroad display this all-important trait of being fiercely independent early on.

Yeah be independent...😅 what about only 31k or 35k offered to students no increaments if I am not wrong.... What about around 15k also you have to pay...... What about you have to take care of your family in that money??? What about devolped nations also have free education. And good stifend....and you can do part time jobs of good wages... Do our parents give us that independent way lifestyle??... Is financial stability is not an issue tell me?? The way prices of things going high... The age when a person completing his/her phd don't u think indian parents demands are different... Yeah be independent.... Then provide me some financial stability......and also provide some girls in mechanical department... @@varunvirat7327 Some very good points. What I meant about Independence was academic Independence after one has joined PhD. However, at the time a student is considering starting on a PhD I always make this clear that if there are financial constraints in the family then starting a PhD is not a good idea. And, all developed nations do not have free education (students in the US are under great debt due to high fees).

I agree completely with all the valuable points you've discussed in this video. I really wish someone told me these words even a week back when I started to feel the heat and was getting slowly down with confidence in some subjects, while pursuing the 1st sem of M.E at JU which I started with the wish to explore all the answers to my queries, thoughts that I earlier had in my undergrads. I feel much positive now, that what I felt over the last couple of weeks isn't uncommon. I guess and really hope this covid stuff goes away and I can dive deep into the tides of Master's, keeping aside the online domain all the time. Thank you Sir. Thanks to KZread Algorithm also, otherwise this wonderful video wouldn't have came up on my feed.

Thank you sir for sharing the point of view of a Professor and also the things to do as a M.Tech student.
Thank you so much sir for this video, I've completed my B.Tech in a private engineering college and currently doing M.Tech (6-semester, Non-GATE) at Jadavpur University. Will be following your advice while doing my coursework in the next semester as I was searching ideas on what to do in the M.Tech thesis.
Sir only few has this ability to accept the new and you have that......😍 I can't experess that in words but you are great....
I am leaving this comment ...just to come again and listen again as the words are quite relatable and motivating✌️ ..thank you
👍 Kindly make a similar video with Advise for PhD students (or "Research Scholars" as they are called in India!)... Covering the concerns of both prospective and currently enrolled PhD students... Please address diplomatically but head-on the "uncomfortable" issues which research scholars often face with their PhD Guide/ Advisor.... How can research scholars cope/ deal with issues of incompatibility with their PhD Guide/ Advisor in terms of beliefs and attitudes towards research and publishing/ working styles/ etc... Just as a PhD is of longer duration than an MTech, it will be good if the video could be proportionately longer... TIA and looking forward.
Hearing you on such issues is always a pleasure. Please make a video on the integrated masters programmes (BTech +MTech) and how the students of these programmes should approach their studies and preparation for the future.

Thank you for the kind words. The Dual Degree programme in large parts is not much different from the B.Tech programme except possibly the 4th and 5th years. So, the advice given to B.Tech students and also to the M.Tech students apply to the Dual Degree students. If I do think of some substantial points which can help the Dual Degree students in a dedicated way, I will make a video.
It's really great to see you address such crucial and sensitive issues, sir. Highly appreciate it!! Sir, please make a dedicated video for MS(research) students as well. There's little to no knowledge of what goes on in the MS courses in IITs and what's expected of them and what opportunities lays for them in the future. How's MS different from MTech, the pros and cons. The reason I'm requesting this information is that most of the students opting for these courses have got "low gate scores" which is why they tend to undermine the potential of MS by research courses. Please help us realize its true potential.

IITs and NITs are primarily UG engineering colleges. I have graduated from IISc, and thankfully, there is absolutely no issue with UG/PG interaction dynamics. For IISc, research is supreme, among the student fraternity, those pursuing PhDs are the "kings" - if I may use that term.

Even if u have lower cgpa than the required (under any circumstances), if u are in good eyes of the professors, u have the chance to progress!! Cheers!! I guess it was helpful!

Sir , I would like to request you to make a video on the research scenario in India. How does the premier institutions in India such as the TIFR, IISc, IITs etc stand with respect to the several US universities in respect of the research environment, PhD experience, etc. Many faculty members in IITs (what I have seen so far) have done their PhD or Post Doc in foreign universities mostly in the US. Is it a rarity these days people who are educated purely in India ending up to become a faculty member in premier institutions in India (such as IISc, IITs and TIFR)? You are definitely having a better idea and first hand experience about these aspects. It would be great if you can give us a clear idea about the current scenario. 👍 Good idea for another video... Just as Prof. has mentioned that MTechs may face an "Inferiority Complex" vis-a-vis' BTechs, similarly as you have pointed out many PhD research scholars from India, including those from IITs and other NIRF ranked universities, often feel inadequate and insecure vis-a-vis' foreign PhDs from top ranked international universities. It will be a valuable resource if Prof. jc creates a PLAYLIST on KZread with a series of videos which address the various dilemmas which PhD research scholars in India face, such as: - Deciding whether to pursue a PhD or take up an IT services or core sector job after BE/ BTech/ MTech? - Choosing a PhD Research area, topic and supervisor? - Dealing with expectations of the PhD Guide/ Advisor and Committee? - Coping with rejection of papers submitted to conferences and journals? - Deciding whether to pursue Post-Doc in a foreign university with a hope of getting selected as Faculty in an IIT, vis-a-vis joining as Faculty in a tier Institute immediately after PhD?

So how to keep oneself motivated in such case to carry on the studies of GATE?

I am grateful that atleast I have a job but my salary is 20000. I stay alone and I keep thinking that all these efforts over the years for this. No value No money .... I am a Fea engineer now but I am demotivated to study anymore or any brainstorming for this because I am not getting anything in return. At this point, I hope someone could guide me and tell me what to do . I have a family and I have responsibilities but it brings tears in my eyes when I realize that I can't fullfill dreams of the people I love and I can never earn good anymore I wish I had not made promises to my mother when I was a small kid These things are very difficult to share too. Just putting a fake smile everyday but deep down I am dead. My friends who chose to do MBA are in better position now. I loved mechanical engineering but I was wrong.

I know of someone a couple of years junior to me who did not do any engineering studies and at the very beginning of his career faced quite a lot of hardships even physical ones. But he kept at it tenaciously, and now he is one of the most valued employees in that company ... rising fast with healthy boosts in salary at regular intervals. So, just because you are starting in a small way doesn't mean that you will be stuck there for life. Please try to renew your enthusiasm a bit ... I don't know what to do in my career can you please help :( I heard that doing bsc msc Is waste as it doesn't teach you any real life skill. Why there is no such opportunity to choose subjects of our major according to our choice? Or is there any opportunity to persue both??
Great Sir Thanks
Thanks for talking about all the unspoken facts like inferiority complex, job sacrifice etc. I am an UG and I want to do mtech from kgp.

@@adityasinghdabas7868 Yes, I had noticed that. But I thought perhaps you had written some script to programmatically keep track of certain channels by automatically pulling this sort of data.
Great👍
Good videos prof jc...I am RS @IITR
Nice sir ... I'm at ug final yr soon i will there in IIT as a pG 🥰✌️
What is your take on direct PhD, that is PhD directly after BTech. Is it advisable?
Thanku for the video sir..... I don't know it is appropriate to ask... 1 thing sir I am interested in college dropouts from IITs and all other premium institutes....many big names are there like mukesh ambani,Prashant Bhushan, Vinod Rai etc...and the dropout rate increased over the time.... I think many of us interested in a video what is the feeling of a dropout students or why people dropout from such good colleges... Also mtech fees hike in news previous days....so the reasons of dropouts are same for both ug and pg....... It will be good to see a proffesors opinion 😁....
Sir please make a video about communication.
Thank you sir . Pls do make video about research work 😅. Any guidence would help.
sir which is better iiser tvm or bhu for bsc hons.physics considering the fact that research career(professorship) is expected ahead
Sir make another video on 2nd year project as well. Im interested in PhD, so PhD video is also requested. Thank you 🙏
Sir please can You make another video regarding the Do's and Don't during the Mtech course and Advice for 1st year students in Mtech as you previously make on BTech ... Please sir please 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I am preparing for GATE this year, not because I need a PSU job or admission to any IIT, but I just wanted to check on the list of really excelling in a competitive exam, which I failed to do in 10+2. Well at least that was my motivation until November when I bought a GATE question bank, picked up the chapter on the deflection of beams, took "10 mins" to solve "one" question on simply supported beam with UDL, and when I came up with that (5WL^4/384EI), I was like I have to remember this? Seriously? My eyes widened, as I looked at the thickness of the book, with 20+ subjects (courses) with god knows how many more formulas to keep in mind. It also surfaced the fact that how the 4-5 years of IIT has rusted our quick problem-solving skills, how the use of calculators has made us so dependent to check even the basic arithmetic/trigonometric results, and how the lack of academic competitive vibes (debatable whether necessary or not) in the campus has reduced our zeal to perform up to our potentials. (I should also mention that they can completely get back to that JEE Mode if the size of the prize is appealing enough, e.g., Placements!) Having been in courses with the GATE-qualifiers and speaking in general, I can indeed testify that they are much more serious, motivated, and polished than the dual degree students, no matter what the results may say. Kudos to them! P.S: I love how you have passionately turned down the phone receiver while recording this, hope the viewers also get to know about your poetry some time! :D

As always, it is a pleasure to read through your very, very coherently written thoughts. I also appreciate how, as one of our top Dual Degree students, you have developed a proper respect for the GATE-qualified M.Tech students who are definitely much better prepared than others in terms of the important problem set ups. In the old curriculum (of which you were a part), we had given more emphasis towards the kind of problem solving (at least in Mechanics of Solids) which was perhaps a bit more oriented towards a research career ... and that is not well suited for the majority of the students. The new curriculum Mechanics of Solids has been made significantly more in sync with the global standards that prepares for a professional engineering career. The hope is that an academically serious student, having gone through this curriculum would need less than "ten minutes" for "one problem"! :) And, I know there could be serious arguments both for and against this sort of curriculum revision because we have already gone through those passionately last year. Ah, someone noticed the phone receiver (had forgotten to put it down in my earlier videos). And, where did you see the poems?

Dear sir, In 2018, if you could put in questionnaires and take interviews for picking up suitable candidates for projects, a little research from our side should be expected too right? I had read your pieces back then and was amused to see "professors" having such hobbies too (well back then it was something totally new for me :p)!

In every job or project associate interview, they ask always ask about your cllg and also ask that is your cllg gov or private
Hello sir ... I did BTech from very local private college and due to guilt of below average knowledge I studied for gate after college . Now I have mechanical rank to join top IITs but iam trying to get best option and preparing gate still ... I always put knowledge in first place then job and I know it's the right attitude IITs looking for but what else qualities I need to do excellent performance in mtech ? Should I learn anything beforehand joining in core mechanical field like softwares speaking skills etc ... What will be most difficult challenges I will be facing there ?
Thank u sir
Sir, does btech students are preffered over mtech students in placement of iits for consultancy firms
