I have gone through a bad experience in research at IIT Kharagpur. The toxic culture in lab and fear of funding going away forced me to leave the research role and switched to private sector. Now when I look back I feel that the short tenure I had in academic research with publishing journals didn't helped me in my career growth. If anyone wants to do RnD please move out of India for better opportunities.

I am a PhD in Computer Science and an Assistant Professor at a Govt University in Delhi. Right after my joining, I have been given the duties of "Purchase Officer", "PWD Civil Works Coordinator", "Academic Incharge", and "Examination Superintendent". Also, I am given different other non-academic duties from time to time. Since last two years I have not been getting any time to do any kind of research. Heck, let alone research, I hardly get any time to prepare for my classes! This is the reality of faculty members in India! How would I do research?

Very awakening and relevant podcast Abhijit Sir. I am MSc Physics student at Tribhuvan university, Kathmandu, Nepal. We subdue curiosity and creativity due to survival and imitation oriented mentality rather than explorative approach. We have developed objective approch which is very viscious to the development of scientific culture in our society. Without doing large scale investments in cutting edge science and tech in terms of money, resources and commitment from society and government. Enlightening programme like this must be in thousands.

A professor can only grow if he's able to manipulate his student to work for him. This honest confession hardly any professor would make. I am a retired prof, who shifted to a company job. Govt want assistant professors to be paid in pennies and work as hard as a housewife.

India has a big opportunity in hosting science conferences. Many conferences are pretty expensive because the hotels etc are expensive. India can host high quality conferences at a much lower cost. Organizers would be thankful too.

One of the best podcasts I've listened to lately, keep bringing the scientists sir. Also you're very good (naturally obviously) at doing science podcasts, the questions are very well structured and the conversation has a nice build up and progression overall. only thing I would like to add (from the pov of a student), i would like to hear a bit more about the research of the guests and AC sir as well.

I had faced a lot of humiliation 😞 in my school by my physics teacher for asking questions.when i questioned about my doubt he tried to made jokes on me .if he answers then it would be in a ridiculous manner.when i stand to ask doubt in other classes the whole of my classmates sees me as a baffoon.i didn't give up .this issue ignited me and made a sharp seeker.being in 6 th standard i have entered into 10 quiz and then i led my group Win. from then my physics teacher frightened on me.therefore his preperation at night extended for 2 hours😂

I tell you the biggest issue, as soon the scientist in govt. institutions get the job, 90 % of them stop doing any relevant research. Where as in US only the professors or scientist are already on top of their field gets tenure and everybody else is temporary, each scientist have to do research and ask for grant, if they don’t get the grant they have no work, so there is an incentive to perform better. In India there is not a lot of incentive to do great work.

I spent 2 months in iisc bangalore. As far as I can see in IISc, no one cares about research, they only care about publishing papers and going abroad for conferences. Then I decided that research is not a field for me. Thank god, I never pursued research.

@@koMa861 the number is always low. One two here and there because they are well funded. The so called PhD scholars are there because they will get promotion in their jobs if they complete the thesis.

We also need to acknowledge the lack of resources and opportunities. Plus, people in research, at least in engineering colleges, have to usually jeopardise their prospects of getting jobs. This makes getting into research a financial problem. Other than that, it is very hard for passionate students to avail opportunities to work in research. It is actually easier for us to go to a better university outside for research degrees than at IISc. We need more Institutes which are at par with IISc or better, with more capacity so that it a larger number of students can follow their passion to do research.

We also require capable people to actually consider teaching as a profession. Right now, Teachers are so underpaid that no one considers it as a viable career, except for very few people. Then the people that take up the role of teachers are people who aren't employable and had no other choice. This is the root of the problem.

AC Sir, as a researcher myself, i'd like to add these questions: 1. west has different demography, problems and needs and their research is tailored to it. Bharat is 1.4billion strong, we have our own demography, problems and needs, and food security will always be our foremost need simply coz our size. Yes science is global and we can't be lagging behind when the world is genome editing with CRISPR. How do we come at a balance wherein we make sure our own needs research doesn't lack due to or lag behind because of keeping pace? 2. do you think there needs to be an interaction/equilibration interface where taxpaying citizens are disseminated information and kept abreast of research outputs? in a world post-COVID, having MORE BIOTERROR STRAINS than it has approved probiotic strains, there needs to be SOME ACCOUNTABILITY. especially when american deep state companies are headed here in this decade.

Abhijit, thanks for a great video. Am an architect by profession, but an avid science buf. I have seen or observed architecture as an outcome of technology and science. We should be more fascinated with the technology that made Kailasa mandir in Ellora or Pyramids in Egypt being physically achievable. That's architecture for the layman. Being Future Ready is the Job of an architect. Unfortunately that kind of research or even an initiative is still far far away. But no point in just cribbing over it. We are trying to do our bit in that and very soon you will see it coming up in a Grand style. All we are keeping away is any intervention or support from any Govt or an organization with an agenda. Fact is indeed stranger than fiction. It is only on the basis of a strong home front that the external affairs agencies of a country function effectively and with good confidence and gain leverage. It is known that States tend to create deep assets in other States to achieve various goals of their influence and propagating their agenda. In the case of Bharat it can be safely assumed that foreign powers have had until 2014, excellent success in the fostering and cultivation of their deep assets inside Bharat in a well organized manner. These agencies amongst other things have under the guise of freedom have freely indulged in subversive actions like inducement & forced conversions via several NGOs receiving foreign funding, psychological warfare by their careful long term cultivation of Indian media culture that has been dominated by the Lutyens elite who are utterly enamoured by Western lifestyle and anything Phirangi but have only utter contempt for Bharatheeya values & traditions, by Indian elite cooptation by various foreign powers to suit their nefarious designs. Now this long term elite cooptation by foreign powers seems not just restricted to the highest levels of the legislative (some anti-India parties we Sanatanis all are only too well aware of ) but also unfortunately at the top levels of the other two pillars of the constitution, this can be inferred by the outputs being generated by one of these two consistently which are grossly anti-Bharat...totally against the collective consciousness of our aamjanmaanas, their ages old beliefs values and traditions ! This particular elite have arrogated to themselves so much power that even an act of Indian parliament further duly ratified by all our states will also be binned if it doesn't suit their motivated anti-Indian agenda/whims/fancies. Our enemies with nefarious designs would be laughing all the way at this self-inflicted "physiological" chronic insufficiency with regards to our local meritorious talent that is otherwise very capable of working wonders in our educational institutions & later in our public sector too,- it unfortunately is being very skillfully removed by deshbahishkaran, by the well planned efforts of foreign powers through their Indian elite cooptation and corruption over many decades (until 2014) within the various strata of not just the legislative but also the other 2 pillars of the Union. From the enemy's' strategic perspective...has this process not been a lot more harming to our Bharateeya interests compared to say the adversarie's single attack on an institution to take out intelligentsia???... clearly this kind of long war of attrition imposed on Bharat by their very clever 'non-hardkinetic' warfare methods such as the above kind of lawfare, elite cooptation, corruption etc has wreaked a lot more havoc on Bharat and caused a lot more harm to our interests than whatever hard kinetic means the adversary could ever achieve with in the past or present. 🙏😊🔥Is the strategic leadership of our country including yourself, at least cognizant of these threats☺️🙏???, if yes please enlighten us in your next interview as to how you propose to address this gigantic challenge 🙏🙏 just saying that start ups and entrepreneurship of young meritorious talent will do atmanirbharata...I am afraid this is hypocrisy... nothing of this sort will help especially in various public sector that has virtually been made a fortress for the rehabilitation of candidates recruited on the basis of their caste based reservations as against their real merit & talent??? In such a case, a brazen travesty of justice and abominable unfairness to meritocracy will continue to be perpetrated on the Brahmins as an ongoing sad part of their ages old persecution??????, If a semblance of justice has to prevail and if at all a decent Indian public sector productivity and profit and competitiveness in the global market has to be realized, then merit based enrollment and recruitment has to become the norm even in the public sector. This can only arise by ending the gross persecution and injustice being perpetrated on our Brahmin community by successive dispensations. Just erecting Sri Shankaracharya statues and doing pranams without taking above kind of measures to reverse the cruelty and injustice being done to Brahmins by states/Judiciary/centre, amounts to adding insult to injury and is visible hypocrisy 🙏🙏🙏 There should begin large scale public sector recruiting through regular jobs of our meritorious talent, as much as large scale enrollment of our meritorious students in schools and colleges without snuffing them out through our most cruel States/Centre/Judiciary imposed caste based reservations system that has been proving so very very atmaghaathi to our interests and is simply making an utter mockery and hypocrisy of the often parroted word Aatmanirbharatha!!!! 🙏🙏🕉️🔯 Thank you Sir! Hello Abhijit Sir. Want professors from IISC in the AI domain doing exceptional research to come on your show.

Who should have an upper hand in a research institution, the scientific staff or administration? Sadly, it's the administration in India. I work in a CSIR laboratory and I couldn't agree more. The bureaucracy feels like licence Raj from the 70s. Excessive paperwork and restrictions on procurement, billing, funding, budget allocation, and salaries. And that's in the digital age. An account clerk with no science/technology background decides whether or not a laboratory needs an equipment. It's pathetic. Most of my research hours go in writing letters and begging for approvals.

My suggestion to India would be to see their lagging behind as the opportunity for leap frogging. Do original research that’s valuable for your society and culture and country. Don’t blindly follow western standards nor worry about international visibility. The latter will come automatically.

When I was in class 8th, 9th, when we used to ask questions to our science teacher, he used to say that you will get the answer in your higher classes. When doubts come, it is not known to you which class of doubt it is.

Greetings Chavda Ji 🕉️ Dhanyavad for the firebrand & fearless reporting 🙏 I think there is a strongly prevalent culture in the higher judiciary of entitlement & exclusive privileges coupled with hubris & unwillingness to take course correction and set right past wrong judgements which have been monumental blunders. Examples including not doing justice to Kashmiri Pandits who suffered generations of genocide & abuse, generations of meritorious students who were disenfranchised & disabled due to utterly corrupted Mandal commission/Reservations, turning blind eye to the systemic atrocities being perpetrated on the Hindu community and activists in West Bengal, Kerala, TN & NE for several decades, not taking strong position on curbing the spread of Jihadi ideology and forced conversions/abductions etc, not taking a strong position on mass inducement conversions and demographic change (desh ka santan sanskriti ka naksha badalne ka safal koshishein by Jihadi/Missionary and other groups who propagated that to them freedoms given under constitution include freedoms to abuse & subvert) over decades that caused serious national security crises to Bharat. Also an extreme pendency of critical cases due to rather relaxed work culture prevalent for too long and an undue emphasis on woke matters that caused the taking up for judgement on cases such as ages old Hindu Temple traditions which are clear case of judicial overreach and unwarranted interference. As a result of all these, the top court's judgements and actions/inactions on major issues/judgements they have lost the trust of a lot of the traditional people at the grass root levels who are of sanatani values and who want to see, preserve for future generations and foster the values of our ancient Civilization and the values established in our history and our Epics like Ramayana & Mahabharata, Srimad Bhagavatham that have survived the most fearful assault by evil forces over millenia but still continues to march on simply because it is not manmade, indeed it is God-Ordained hence is called Eternal that is ' सनातन ' धर्मा so somehow exists and survives forever despite the efforts of asuric forces to annihilate it. As a result of their apparent loss of trust & their grave credibility crisis due to their several judgements/actions/inactions etc on critical national matters that shocked the collective consciousness of Bharateryas, since sometime there seems to be a reactionary judicial overreach,- a wokeness and a sense of much desperation, a tendency towards sensationalism in their work culture at the top level. The most important thing urgently needed is to have a mechanism for well meaning and nationalistic, patriotic people of भारत to fearlessly and openly debate, criticize and bring necessary changes to the judiciary which has lost quite some sheen and trust. Without such a mechanism for crores of Bharateeya people to rightfully criticize and ventilate their simmering grievances against their judicial service, very serious unrest can arise which can have ramifications for our internal security. Just using scare tactics against anybody who dares to criticize the judicial service and putting them behind bars, framing contempt of court charges or even just adverse comments made by judiciary on such people can be career destroying to such people who dare to rightfully criticize and ventilate their grievances against the judiciary. In other words going with the motto "MIGHT IS RIGHT" is not good for any organization and a dharma exists for everybody. Those who are proceeding with above motto should pay heed to the rightful frustrations in the aamjanmaanas and do course correction at least now by banning the collegium system etc to start with. Even for the mightiest and topmost after all 'Pride comes before a fall' and 'BE YOU EVER SO HIGH THE LAW IS ABOVE YOU' should be the guiding mottos. 🙏🙏🙏The Laws of The Great Land of Bharat are decided and made by OUR PEOPLE, THAT IS WE THE NATION, THE Bharateeyas who are the Torch Bearers OF SANATAN DHARMA. HENCE OUR PEOPLE'S POWER HAS TO BE AND WILL BE SUPREME ULTIMATELY IN ALL MATTERS AS WILL BE THE CASE IN ANY SUSTAINABLE DEMOCRACY IN THE WORLD. It's the sad reality of Indian institutions! Most of the professors want papers, but don't care about quality. They should know that every student is not capable of a paper, and should focus on people who loves research do research and let the people who loves to work and contribute in another way should be allowed to do in that field... India needs to focus on IP - Intellectual Property rights, only that will save India. Nothing else!

Books can be designed to encourage asking questions, and distribute those books freely....or AI teachers could be created to encourage and allow asking questions. Exams and tests should have some points/marks on asking questions, creating models. MCQs are the worst, we need to include at least 30% questions which would require creating models and asking questions. I think authors can try creating new types of books. Kids can learn from newly designed books and will be forced to think differently to prepare for the new type pf tests.

Do we have demand to fund researchers?

I wanna ask Prof Ghosh a really important question You working with quantum physics and artificial materials But are you working on the Lk-99 super conductor, which is being argued as most important research of this century. Forget big research institutions from all around the world even individual researchers are trying to recreate it but is anyone in the indian research institutions doing the same ? Are we willing being left behind on this ?

India has never been the exporter of technology to the rest of the world. Unfortunately, the quality of research originated from indian organization/universities/institutes is alarmingly poor. Otherwise, indian research would have made a big impact exporting technology globally.

PhD scholar here. I am pursuing PhD in agricultural sciences for top agricultural university in India. One of the reasons people don't prefer PhD is lack of scholarship programmes. Even when pursuing PhD without scholarship, the stipend offered by universities is too low. So the amount of motivation to be a reasercher is also low.

Yes sir the problem is becoming a researcher is a long and not easy task first you do BSc then MSc then PhD and may also post doct and at the end salary is so low that it seems waste and there is lack of recognition also.

The project was underfunded and swept under the rug never to be mentioned again? I found out about it when a foreign youtuber made a video about this Indian aircraft which had potential of being on par with planes of MiG and Dassault of that era.

One more important fundamental problem is that philosophical foundations are not taught at school and college levels.Western scientific philosophy emerges from its western theological basis and there's no questioning if and how our Indian Traditional Knowledge System can spawn a distinct materialistic science.Even if such an effort is done there's no ability to appreciate and take risk of funding such R&,D efforts

Science is not philosophy. Science is not Eastern or Western. Science is absolute and universal. What do you mean by "distinct materialistic science" ? How can science be different?

@@RAVISVASAN46 Quite strange. Sorry to say but airplane has to follow equations if aerodynamic. No Indian or western philosophy can change those equations. No Philosophy can change magnitude of charge on electron or proton. Science has nothing to do with philosophy

Life is too short to do research and become a Professor at the age of (45 median) unless if you enjoy research.
