Igniting creativity to transform corporate culture: Catherine Courage at TEDxKyoto 2012

Design leader Catherine Courage challenges us to drive innovation in the workplace by igniting our innate creativity from childhood.
Catherine Courage
Creativity & design leader
History has repeatedly taught us that it often takes great courage to bring about great change. This fact is literally and figuratively embodied in the work of product design innovator and tri-athlete Catherine Courage. A 13 year resident of Silicon Valley, Catherine is currently a leader for a Silicon Valley product design group. Selected as one of Silicon Valley's "40 Under 40" young tech leaders, Catherine has worked passionately to fuse world-class product design with exceptional customer experience. Her vision has inspired her to co-author a book, as well as speak at Stanford University, the California College of the Arts, C100, 48 Hrs in the Valley, Tech Women Canada and FUSE. In addition to all this, she is also an advisor to several entrepreneurial groups and serves on the board of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Catherine strives for no less than to transform the corporate culture in Silicon Valley, and beyond, by using great design as the driving force for change. Catherine embodies the courage and energy vital to building a brighter future.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Creativity is extremely important. When you cannot see things through the eyes of a child there are so many things you miss. I am a tutor for children private and public and other individuals as a Life improvement Coach and Mentor. Many times over I have to get the children to enjoy what they are learning by bringing them to the things they enjoy when it is play time. I do this with the young adults and grown adults. It is beautiful to see what they see after we have accomplished what we are striving for together as a team. I also let them know I am walking through this experience with them because "I want to learn too so "Neener Neener.'"

Without creativity, a company's culture would be very limited. It is difficult to be successful if there is no or limited creativity.

Great video. I used to struggle with the idea of being creative. I used to be stuck in the traditional, artistic sense.

Forgive me - I am not sure Thomas Edison invited the lightbulb - he was perfectioning someting others invented. But he made it really perfect. If you do not believe me, check out Wikipedia.Sorry if this sounds unpopular.

You know it's going to be a disaster when a design leader talks about psychology. It is a lie that all can be creative, and creativity isn't a magical trait without drawbacks. Few artists find ways to support themselves and creativity is negatively correlated with university / grad school success.

but dont you think when you say that creativity is negatively correlated with university / grad school success, the schools are purposefully doing it so you dont get creative and escape the societal system they have made for us?

Could not finish this video. Not real. Super companies may have the bandwidth to play with paper clips and rubber bands. The other 99% have to produce product to pay the bills within a validated process.

That was one of the most useless TEDx talks I've ever heard. She's just regurgitating ideas that others talked about, wrote about, and taught about hundreds and thousands of time. All she adds to it is the typical TED emotive passionate pleading tone that irks the heck out of the listener. No wonder Citrix was in trouble in the first half of this decade, if this was what it's leaders were like.
