IFR Aerobatics in Our L-39 Fighter Jet
Our fighter jet came in a box from Estonia with 9 days to get it ready for Oshkosh, and we're finally on our way! But it turns out there are still a few kinks to work out. L-39 Assembly Part 5.

Matt. Your jet is really cool. I’m glad you guys have such a cool opportunity. But…. you guys need some checklists. You’re going to bend something or worse… get hurt. And… you need to work on CRM; who’s doing what from the front and the back seats. And figure out the O2 mask mic issue. A 13,000’ cabin alt with your mask hanging to your side is a recipe for hypoxia. Also, you can’t ask a US controller for millibars altimeter settings. Make a small conversion chart, laminate it and put it on the panel near the altimeter. Or replace the altimeters with ones reading inHG. You can’t legally fly IFR if you can’t set the altimeters. Make a checklist, set some CRM standards, and Fly safe. And have fun ;)

His cavalier attitude to the whole thing is going to get him on Gryders KZread channel No checklist, Forgetting the generators and inverters before taxing out. The whole “I’m top gun cool Mask thing” at a 13,000 cockpit is a really bad idea. The water bottle AGAIN. And like you said the millibars…. Meaning his IFR flight was, well hello FAA

And his sloppy talking does the rest. He was warned more than once and now nobody understands him.🤣
Shocked no checklist usage 😬 There is a reason they were developed and are used industry wide. Professional plane demands professional flying. Stay safe.

Yeah, thats called editing to make the video shorter. Not a strong thinker are you.
Enjoyed the video. As a professional pilot, the whining to tower was cringe worthy however. Take it up with them on a phone call after you land. Repeatedly asking for something you’ve been denied for won’t help things. You guys need to hire the trainer for a bit longer. Going from piston to jet takes more than a few flights to get accustomed, especially in a high performance jet.
No checklists, no crew coordination and treating ATC like their job is to accommodate his joy ride. What a guy.

Would love to fly one of these birds. Getting tired hopping around in my Airbus
I fear this jet is causing him to make some poor decisions because he's so eager to fly it. He's taking risk after risk, for what? Nothing. First he had that VFR flight where bad storms were closing in on the airport yet he took off anyway, leading to a divert, and now the stuff in this video.

Thanks so much for taking us along for the ride. Enjoyed every minute!
Wow! I was on the edge of my seat and thought it was great. This flight did not disappoint. Thank you for taking us along.
Talk about living the dream! That you could both take a few seconds to appreciate looking up and watching the clouds go by, in your own jet. Priceless
Matt your voice on the calls is not clear, it comes out as a mumble, low modulation. You need to articulate your words. Ive noticed you tend to the same thing on the Bonanza radio, its a different voice than your normal speaking voice. Looks like a lot of fun flying this bird.
Great video and thanks for the ride along. Well done!
Really cool series of videos on you L-39 - beautiful plane!! It must be really awesome to fly - enjoy it 👍 Thanks for sharing 🙂

The water bottle is dangerous. What would you do if it fell by your feet?
From the flightlog you've got a decent number of hours in the L39 now, cant wait to see the flights!
Thing seems like a death trap tbh... 'Let's spin it up and see what critical liquid explodes out of the bottom this time' 😬
I guess I never thought about it’s cool that the L39 is pressurized!
Thanks for visiting our BMI location, it was great to have you!
Thanks for the ride Matt so awesome!
Can't believe you had a water bottle loose on top of the panel
Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world, and if you never believed that before, watching that little jet have to fight and wait to get a word in edgewise certainly showcases that fact.
Wonderful flight video! The audio when you guys transmit is sad. Don't know if it's mics, connections, or what. But I hope those trying to listen to you didn't hear the sounds that we heard. Pretty rough.
Its fantastic. There are an awful lot of handprints on the side of the fuselage in the sunlight.
Now that was enjoyable both for us and for you great content with great flying shots thankyou

You two need to work on your crew coordination 😂
As many times as I've flown, in the moment you don't really have time to appreciate how busy the cockpit gets during departure and arrival.
Thanks for the ride !

Love the L39 vids! Dunno how you're going to go back to the Bonanza now Matt! Good problem to have!
This is something else, love it.
Far too much confusion for safety.
Awesome video. What is the reason that L39s and other jets at Oshkosh use a left break for every approach?
Well done Matt, I enjoy your progression of this dream aircraft.
Matt, enjoying your site. Keep up the good work. BTW I got my private many, many years ago at BMI, your initial down wind was over one of our farms. I was not covering ground in the warrior at quite your rate though.
WOW. One of your best yet M..tks
Awesome flight!
Very awesome series Matt
Holy crap no practice approaches and no pattern work is exactly what it is. You don’t own that airspace. Oshkosh time is absolutely wild for ATC.
I love the paint job on this L-39.
That was FUN !!!
This is awesome!!!! More allerion rolls please. 😊
Nice touchdown at Oshkosh. You’re getting really good at handling the jet. There’s a lot more to flying military jets than flying the Bonanza, right? There’s also a lot more to maintenance of military jets … as you know by now. It’s a cool little plane but I think I’ll stick with civilian hardware. I don’t know what’s going on with the radios in the jet but they definitely need some work.

Another gem on your amazing YT channel. Living under an approach to KPDK, I am constantly aware of GA and enthusiastic to learn more about GA even as a 70ish never-to-be-pilot. Thank you for your contributions to my education. That L-39 is one cool aircraft (my son at Embry-Riddle saw Jared Isaacman land his L-39 at KDAB a few months ago). Addendum: Happened to "watch" November 21 flight on FlightAware; looks like having a lot of fun providing air cover for Alpine.
Why is the guy in the front all over the place? Need to work on crew coordination. Doesn’t bode well on airmanship.

Pretty sure it was staged for dramatic effect.
Great video. It seems like you guys are having equipment issues and I’d highly recommend the guy in the front seat to wear his oxy mask at all times. Since oxy masks in fighterjets are used to supply the pilot in case of an ejection with enough oxygen, a hypoxia scenario or if cabin pressure is lost.
G, day Matt from Sydney Australia. Nice jet: I pray that it's always reliable and takes you through the sky perfectly. 🌏🇭🇲

I'm studying for my Flight Radio Telephony Operator certificate at the moment, and all of the non-standard phraseology in this video bothered me a bit. There is no ten, twenty, or thirteen. This is only wun-ze-ro, two-ze-ro, and wun-tree. It introduces room for ambiguity and increases cognitive load for people talking to you on the radio.
STUNNING CAMS MATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rarely at FL23 can we see these scenes in a fighter jet!!!!!!!!!!!

Really cool to see you land that beautiful rig in my neighborhood (KLSE). I think you should have made a last second go-around decision and created your own option! Hope you can get the coms figured out. The audio was a little tough to hear.
Great video, but that radio interference is not too good. Might need some shielded cable or some grounding issues. Happens with older planes that have been torn apart and reassembled like yours. I am sure you'll sort it out.
Absolutely loving these videos. Does anyone know of any similar channels that operate a jet?
