Can't speak English fluently? Try THIS instead of regular lessons
Think about the way you typically learn English (classroom, textbook you didn’t choose, studying grammar points or vocabulary, trying to understand context and meaning)
What is the result? We know that even after years of studying this way, it doesn’t lead to a good level of confidence & fluency. You may even get good grades, but can’t hold a conversation with a native. You know your textbook, but it’s difficult to read a newspaper or even social media posts because of native slang and idioms. You can ace a vocabulary test, but when it comes to making full sentences, the cat’s got your tongue.
So let’s talk about a better way. It’s not your fault. It’s just that learning English through regular, traditional lessons is not really the fastest way to become fluent.
First, the environment - did you know it’s important to put yourself in real-life situations where you can observe the way people communicate in English? This is how babies learn! You’re not a baby, you’ve got a head start. If you can’t be in an English-speaking environment, then watch a lot of conversational videos, like in my “Fluent in 15” Conversation course.
Second, the textbook - this is the WORST way to learn a language fluently. I remember my Spanish textbook started us learning a long list of zoo animal names, which by the way I NEVER used in real life in the 20 years since I learned Spanish. The better way to learn, especially at the intermediate level and up, is to find something you’re interested in and learn about it in English. For example, I like to cook, so I learn a lot of Spanish by watching cooking shows on TV and social media.
Third, studying to learn grammar & vocabulary - it’s only preparing you to please your teacher and an antiquated education system, and not real life. So if you want to learn English for real life, you need to put yourself in real-life situations. I keep saying this, so let’s dive into how to do this.
Think of 3-5 things that are interesting to you. Not what your teacher wants you to learn, but something that you would learn about for fun. Cars? Music? Animals? Current events?
Now, for improving your fluency, you need to have INPUT and a chance to create OUTPUT. What does this mean? Well, you need a way to read and a way to listen about this topic. So for example, a video or podcast or music and a book, magazine, blog, newspaper online, etc. Output means you are creating! For example, write a social media post (short and sweet) or a blog post, or a Quora answer or Reddit. Speak by practicing alone & recording or actually make friends who speak English and enjoy the same topics - attend a meetup group, or go to a class on the topic, for example.
Of course in this way you are going to be consuming content meant for NATIVE speakers, called AUTHENTIC content, not specifically created for ESL. So, you may see and hear new words you don’t know yet. That’s ok, it happens to native speakers too! Just stay calm and try to learn as you go. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can improve your knowledge of the language this way.
Can you think of a topic you’re interested in, and ways to explore it using the 4 English language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)?

I have been an English teacher for 15 years, I grew up in Canada and now I live in Brazil where my parents are from I speak Portuguese also, and what I can see now is my Brazilian students learn WAY MUCH BETTER AND FASTER when I explain to them the grammar rules in Portuguese. Adults DO NEED to get grammar explanations in their NATIVE language. That makes the process faster, less painful, and more effective. I speak English with them most of the class, but when it comes to grammar explanations I ALWAYS explain them in Portuguese. No wonder my students feel comfortable enough to use new grammar structures.

Quite the opposite. I have always liked the beach, surfing, the outdoors...so Brazil is heaven for me. If you make some decent money you can live a great life here. I live a few blocks away from the beach, walk around in shorts and flip-flops everywhere, go surfing every day, work only 5 hours a day. I am in heaven. Not to mention the food, which is superb. @@badrbaaich4209

So if you keep going in you journey you got this for sure, constancy is the key.

Thanks for the amazing bits of advice. I moved to Canada 6 months ago and when I lived in the country(Iran) I started English and I Thought learning enough. But when I arrived in Canada I found out I didn't know too much English. So I've decided to live here and the first thing is language. Then I focused on my weaknesses such as listening. It is necessary to understand people and what they say because learning English in class and my country is so different. These days learning English as my third language is the only way to save my life. Due to having some personal issues, fighting and learning English fluently is one way to help me and help my mental health.

One of the challenges is to memorize the capricious patterns of werbs, adjectives, and adverbs in how they are combined with prepositions and objects; there seems to be no logic, and we just have to memorize, and this takes a long time of practice. I have found a mere list of common prepositions, not a list of those patterns. Is there any book on this topic? Perhaps the explanation of the functions of prepositions in Old English would also be helpful. It seems to me that the above problem is somewhat unseen by the teachers.

We'd really appreciate it if you could you upload more videos presenting US idioms and slang expressions so that we could start communicating with native American speakers on an entirely different level. Also we'd like to see videos on your great channel featuring samples of job interviews, which is extremely critical for newly arrived immigrants as well as people coming to the US to work for a period of time stipulated in the contract. We are especially interested in customs and traditions a typical American citizen is trying to follow. Those of us who are planning to get into a romantic relationship with Americans would like to get a better idea about personality traits of an average man or woman born and raised in the US. You are right. Sitting on my PC and listening to you is (relatively) easy, reading comments and "speaking in my own head" too. But: Going out and finding someone who's fluent in English to talk to them is really hard here in Germany. And what we learnt here in our schools doesn't help either. What's relatively easy is, when you go to another (non German and non English speaking) country and try it there. After 2-3 days it's easier from day to day. And fun fact: Mostly the other people don't speak English natively too. So if you make a mistake - or no sense at all - you've got always an excuse. ;-)
