Matt's PGA tour stats provide helpful perspective. And if you adjust for the clubs pros hit from those distances, even more. Matt himself has explained this in his "lecture" videos. E.g. from 125-150, pros are hitting wedges, maybe a 9 iron. I don't usually get within 24 feet from 150 yards (6 iron for me). But I can usually get a pitching wedge from 100 yds. within 30 feet. When Matt pointed this out in his lecture I learned what he says here, I'm not as bad as I thought. Matt's not only THE Playa, he's a statistical genius!!!

Ok, I'll have to try that line-up trick of aiming at far-away objects. I did already use something close on the ground to help me aim my clubface, but it actually makes sense, from a purely mental point of view, to ignore precise targets on the ground and aim at something more abstract. Thanks for this, will try it next round!

Some great insight mate. I find I play a lot better when I think like a pro; planning my shots, visualizing my ball flight, strategizing and thinking about where to miss and where the trouble is on a hole. Versus thinking about my swing and swing thoughts. The time to work on technique and clubs you might not hit well is during practice - not on the course. I am retired and practice almost daily so my swing is what it is...I am not going to change anything during a round. When I am on the course I prefer to be in scoring mode not practice mode.

Your advice about picking a far target like the mountaintop is something I am currently working on. Maybe I have too much experience in precision shooting sports where I'm trying to hit what I aim at and that bothers me. My short game is actually quite good but off the tee I'm a train wreck because I'm trying to hit it to a specific part of the green and it's just not working. Thank you for all of your videos. Keep up the good work.

Matty - if you see this, how many rounds does it usually take you to get used to new clubs? I had been playing with 20 year old Big-Box Store clubs for, well.... 20 years, and got down as low as 92 with your videos last year. This year I saved up and got fitted for "real" clubs, a full set. I'm hitting farther (and usually more accurately) than ever before, but my misses and dispersion are worse, as are my scores. Haven't yet broken 100 this summer. Chunks, fluffs, poofies, thins, and overshooting the green with my irons between 125-180 yards is costing me strokes. Do you think I just need more swings and more range time to figure out these new clubs?
