Thanks for this interesting video! I was thinking about male style essences for a while and this video helped me to sort my thoughts. However I was suprised by some examples you showed. E.g. Cillian Murphy as a dramatic. Of course in Peaky Blinders he has this very sharp haircut and tailored costumes. But actually his face is very ambivalent. He has very feminine features such as the rounded eyes, full lips, and a slightly rounded nose. On the other hand he has a very defined jawline and an overall square face shape. So I thought he might have a classic essence because he has soft and sharp features at once.

Think Before You Sleep directed here and I'm glad he did. I was told when I was younge that I should work out as it would suit my face better. Wasn't sure what that meant. I've since put a lot of work in at the gym and been told a suit looks like it's constricting me, so when you talked about Natural it really made me realise what i should be looking at in terms of overall style. Great video with excellent examples, it's underrated and I hope it gets more attention.

I’m a romantic male and while researching kibbe I’ve found that romantic men, like myself, favor soft clothing with swirls of fabric around the face; scarfs, collars, wide lapels, fur collars, bandanas tied around the neck. Anything to create ripples or waves.

Romantic Essence male here: i've noticed reactions to the way i dress (casual/classic), and i can give you a sure-fire way to pinpoint a Romantic Essence person. If you picture an Ingenue type and a Romantic type in button-up shirts, all the way buttoned, and then un-button the top button. The Ingenue gives a relaxed feeling, while the Romantic almost always gives off boudoir vibes. Think Elijah Wood vs John Stamos. hope it helps. cheers!

Thanks for mentioning men fearing a blow to their masculinity! So many people nowadays mock masculinity or disregard it altogether and it's refreshing to find someone who doesn't do that. My husband is extremely masculine -- very "mountain man", he definitely has some natural essence -- but is also extremely yin in facial structure, nose, etc. He would definitely feel insulted if I told him that, simply because he has been made to feel self-conscious and like he doesn't look manly enough with his rounder features. BTW, would love a style roots video dedicated to style suggestions for men! Both my husband and I are on a "wardrobe/style journey".

I'm a SD and my boyfriend is definitely an ingenue... He is so cute. We've been together since we were teens and we both definitely went through a thing where he felt a bit robbed of his masculinity, and me of my femininity, coming into our adult proportions. Now it is cool realizing that the both of us have unique looks

I think you're spot on with your breakdown of Romantic - not to reinforce stereotypes, but the 'Latin Lover' does kind of correspond to a type of dark, smoldering essence (along with actual Romance languages such as French, Italian, and Spanish).

My bf also has some ethereal essence and he looks incredible in long flowy jackets made from thin materials, capes, hoods, shawls, scarfs. It makes him look elf like. Long jumpers in earth tones or gemstone colors also look amazing, oversized stuff if the fabric is thin. Silver or gold. Long necklaces with roughly cut crystals or natural materials like wood or bone gives him a shaman vibe :) quite a fascinating essence really

One of my main beefs with the idea of describing yin as “feminine” and yang as “masculine” is that I’ve always felt it misleads and creates prejudice (ie, you inadvertently envision “yang” types and yang essences as more “male”). This video proves why I think we should strive to avoid any afjectives that might introduce gendered notions in typology and essence: for each essence you showed men that are regarded as the peak of male attractiveness, because yes, “sensual” and “fleshy” (for example) is not the exclusive prerogative of femininity.

Great video, that comparison of dramatic and romantic really helped visualise the difference. I think ingenue is often confused for romantic when talking male essences. But I think you’re right- it’s more sensuality I’m a 5’9” SD with romantic and ingenue essence and my partner is a 6’1 and I think SD too with a romantic and dramatic essence I’m sort of a tall Marilyn/ Bardot vibe and he’s a meatier Arthur Miller. So interesting to think about it

My partner is hands down ingenue with a bit of romantic, but is a big guy and a rugby player. This so perfectly explains why he pulls off such quirky stuff and loves fancy dress, and pulls off anything playful that just looking at him from behind you wouldn't expect given his body type. And why he's seen as a protector/good/friendly rather than intimidating. Love this.

Did you confuse the yin/yang text in the first photo? Because Hrithik Roshan is all sharp angled and elongated and young Christopher Walken looked like Scarlett Johansson (it's a meme even) with his round eyes and lush lips, so I guess you mean Hrithik is yang and Christopher yin - not the other way round, right?

This is so interesting! If I try and type my parents my dads definitely one of the youthful, petite looking types. And I'm a kibbe FG which fits into the smaller, younger looking types.

I really enjoyed seeing this applied to men! I think it'd be interesting to take a gender neutral approach to the essences, maybe talking about some non-binary or more androgynous presenting celebrities in general :)

This is so interesting! I’ve tried to find this kind of info for men for ages. I have typed ny hubby as a flamboyant natural before , But that is just me guessing 😅 The thing is that he has a beard (and rocking it). It makes him look natural. But without the beard he leans to dramatic. Wonder if facial hair can ”fake” an essence?

This was helpful to understand more of the differences in women too. Still no idea where I stand though lol I have been told I have doll-like features like the small plump pouty lips and large round ish eyes however I also have a somewhat prominent jawline and my shoulders are slightly wider than my hips, however I carry more weight like in my bottom for example than my breasts that stay small. Waistline is somewhat small but wouldn’t say it’s hour glass either. but proportionate for the most part, I am also 5’6. I used to think I was a natural but now I’m not so sure.. any help is welcome is anyone has any good guesses for me lol

I'm having a bit of a difficult time placing myself here, but I'm definitely on the yang dominant side. Maybe a natural, now that I think about it. All I know is that my face is very defined, but I'm also not Grand Moff Wilhulff Tarkin :P

Thank you so much for doing this! I agree there isn't a lot out there for men but I have thought my boyfriend is a gamine for a long time due his boyish face and looking good in playful colors and patterns and this confirms it. I am intrigued about the difference between gamine and ingenue men as that's not 100% clear to me. I think this might be easier if look at men from different time periods for instance in Henry the 8ths time period in England you see a lot of differences between Quaker Protestant style and whimsical and romantic styles and fabrics on men.

The way I think of gamine vs ingenue is like, gamine = youthful + cheeky/mischievous, whereas ingenue = youthful + innocent/naive. That’s the vibe I get anyway.
